You should only listen to the music (run the audio through your stereo but don't turn on your TV). Or dub the songs onto a cassette and savor the _music_ first. Then, once you know the songs, seeing the videos associated with them will be another great adventure. Once again (*sigh*), meth took the opportunity to trash _TRS_ when she broadbrushed: > > She has released two albums since then, _The Sensual World_ and _The Red > > Shoes_. If you can find "The Line, The Cross, The Curve," which is the mini-movie Kate did based on that album, you'll gain an even greater appreciation for the sheer amount of work she did for _The Red Shoes_ release. IMAGINE LOVE (the single doesn't have any bsides though. just a radio remix). it is now out of print, and i think LORI has kept it out of print intentionally. it isn't a bad album, and she occasionally does a song from it in concert, but mostly it is something that is behind her. she even changed her publishing company from BLUE KITCHEN music, to FEELS GOOD FOR A MINUTE music. it's a decent album, that is worth picking up in the cheap bins (where you will find it, if at all). some nice tunes, and she does have a lovely, though a bit thin and affected, voice. as for what her sound is like and per recommendations, i think her latest STARS is a great starting point. it is very accessible, and has more happy songs, than her other two. well, at least happy sounding. if you read the lyrics, they are still quite somber and sad, like the rest of her stuff. i would then work your way backwards to EVERYTHING I TOUCH RUNS WILD (the 2CD set), and then WHERE IT GOES. i think they also run from most depressing (WHERE IT GOES) to most uplifting. her music is probably comparable to BETH ORTON, in that she has a touch of folk singer songwriter, but with more a bit of a production, underlying beat edge to it. not nearly as trip hoppy as BETH is, nor as radio friendly catchy, i think what BETH is doing is probably the closets approximation to her. it's most evident in EVERTHING I TOUCH and WHERE IT GOES (because ANTON FIER help produce both albums i think - the guy behind GOLDEN PALOMINO's her project before going solo). another comparison you can make between BETH and LORI is that they both have debut solo albums that are out of print. they both have male producers that add beats and bits (BETH had WILLIAM ORBIT, LORI had ANTON FIER) and they both are now solo, and have a following. maybe they are the same person. i've never seen them in the same room together. have you? jburke mentioned > howeverlong, is basically Stephen Merritt and whomever he feels like > playing with. They had an album years and years ago, under the MF name, > which featured female vocals called _The Wayward Bus_. Very casiotone, > but very fabulous. actually there were two albums that had female vocals, released under the MAGNETIC FIELDS name. both of them sung by SUSAN ANWAY, they were the first two album released by MG and have now been rereleased on one CD by MERGE RECORDS. the first one is called THE WAYWARD BUS and the second one is called DISTANT PLASTIC TREES. SUSAN unfortunately moved to texas after the release of DPT and convinced STEPHIN to sing instead. his voice has gotten progressively better though. 69 LOVE SONGS is probably his best to date, and tops my 1999 list (i never really made one, but if i were to make one, it would make up there along with the MAGNOLIA soundtrack, THE ALUMINUM GROUP's PEDALS and a few others). it helps that he writes in such a varied style on the project and has three other singers in the 3CD set. there are three volumes of 69 LOVE SONGS, and i were to pick a volume i would certainly go for VOL 1. but if you like STEPHIN MERRIT and his projects, definitely get the box set. it has a nice booklet in which STEPHIN talks about each song, one by one, and the background of how he started with 69LS. other projects by STEPHIN include THE 6TH's that people have been mentioning (the new 6TH's album is done, but is in limbo, because LONDON records no longer exists in it's current fate, and he wants a major label to release it, not MERGE. rumor has it that the lead singer of THE DIVINE COMEDY is featured on the album as well as SARAH CRACKNELL from ST. ETIENNE. he wanted to get DIAMANDA GALAS on it as well, but she turned him down. bummer). also there is FUTURE BIBLE HEROES, an extremely SYNTHPOP casio perky album, in which STEPHIN basically sings and writes songs to (excellent album when you want to bounce around the room) and THE GOTHIC ARCHIES which is goth synth. i am not overly fond of the EP that they put out, but some people really like it. if i were to start with THE MAGNETIC FIELDS though (it's STEPHIN's main project) i would probably get HOLIDAY which is his most consistant album. depressing lyrics. perky music. happy sounds, set to somber words, what more can you ask for? not to mention the fact that STEPHIN is an EXCELLENT lyricist. sample lyric "on a ferris wheel looking out on coney island. under more stars than there are prostitutes in thailand..." love him. he puts on great live shows too. irvin. np. For "mainstream" artists, I start with cdnow.com. (note: this is influenced by the fact I link to them from my website and make use of the credits earned by people purchasing product from my link. However, I've also nearly always been satisfied by their performance.) For indie artists, I search a variety of sites including songs.com, cdbaby.com, or ladyslipper, depending on the 'type' of artist. Not sure if you're asking from a "consumer" or "artist" perspective, Matt. But, restating both my opinion as a consumer and the views expressed on some of the acoustic music biz lists, the more 'indie' related sites certainly return more $$ to the artist for each purchase, but it is *really important* that an artist get their CD listed on at least one of the more major cd sites on the web despite the lesser $ return. For the visibility, and also because of the math about greater volume at lower % equals more $$ than lower volume at higher %. What fueled my question is the search for a CD by a wonderful ectophilic artist I discovered on MP3.com - Sarah Lentz. (I can't remember if anyone has discussed her yet.) I went to amazon who had her CD, as did cdnow. Cdbaby didn't list it, though. Her site (http://www.sarahlentz.com) lists all three as sources for her CD, which is why I asked. I will purchase it from cdnow, then, unless someone can tell me a better site where the artist retains all her money. Maybe I'll email her and offer her a check for the CD? I bet that may work. I will give that a try. Thanks to all who responded! Matt Bittner __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! The first, "Shelter", was published prior to her joining the Golden Palominos. It's long out of print, and I'm led to believe that is Lori's preference. Shelter is a fairly uneven work, and is my least favorite of her solo albums. That said, the title track may be her most heart wrenchingly emotional work... in a dark "Where It Goes" kind of way. It you're starting off on Lori, I think her latest "Stars" is the right place to start. It's very accessable and as jjhanson pointed out, fairly happy. I don't agree however that "Stars" is less emotional. It think it is less dark and in some ways even humourous ("Head In a Box") - something fairly rare in Lori's work. > To see a slightly different side of Lori, more sultry and less > self-pitying you could also try a couple of Goldem Palominos records: > "This is how it feels" and "pure". To me, the two Golden Palominos albums that include Lori are a completely different thing. Yes, it's Lori's vocals, but the music, arrangements, and production are like nothing else I've ever found. Almost hip-hop with deep bass and loops. Almost ambient. And Lori's dark emotional vocals. It all fits together so well. These albums originally convinced me of Bill Laswell's genius as a producer.
