But vocally? I dunno... She's a rather young singer-songwriter pianist from Toronto, pushed on us by our own Steve Ito. With her first release, the indie _Universe_ ep (actually, it's a lot closer to a short album), she utterly stunned an awful lot of ectophiles. The follow-up, _Blue Parade_ didn't garner quite the same enthusiasm around here, I think because it wasn't quite fierce enough. It's a gorgeous album, and has some incredible stuff on it, but there's just something about it that's not quite spectacular. That's not to say it hasn't seen plenty of praise around here, or shown up on top-10 lists for '99. > Also, I think Neal mentioned the Magnetic > Fields...they have a great album Wasps Nest (I think > that's the correc title) under the band name The > 6ths...there is more of a female vocal presence than > in their Magnetic Fields albums. Magnetic Fields, which has existed in many incarnations over the last howeverlong, is basically Stephen Merritt and whomever he feels like playing with. They had an album years and years ago, under the MF name, which featured female vocals called _The Wayward Bus_. Very casiotone, but very fabulous. Magnetic Fields also contributed a rather odd "If I Were a Rich Man" to the new _Knitting on the Roof_ album. jeff n.p. _Path of A Body_, Veda Hille ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 12:28:38 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Sarah Slean at MIT? You may have to have been a Jewish kid in the '60s to have had just the right love/hate relationship with this music (the show basically eclipsed all other Jewish music for years, long past the point that everyone was sick of it) for the disc to have maximum impact, but it's great. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Shekhinah: The Presence http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 16:52:40 EST From: Paroxysm33@aol.com Subject: Rhodes I Is there any way to still get a copy of this CD? Today's cover story at ClickTV is about how TV shows have been using music and giving some previously unknown bands some exposure. It mentions in particular Northern Exposure, which (along with Due South, which wasn't mentioned) pretty much started the trend; and moves on to the shows on the WB, even sparing a couple sentences for Xena: Warrior Princess and its four (4) sountrack albums to date. Since music on tv is a subject that's come up here a lot, I thought it would be of interest. Slightly related note: I saw Peter Mulvey play the other night, and he said that a song of his *almost* made it into Felicity's Thanksgiving episode this fall. He didn't seem too perturbed that it didn't make the cut, but I was kind of bummed -- that would've been just too cool! He's about as unsigned as you can get (and he's pretty damn good, too). (Ack! Well, actually, I haven't been since I had to send it on to Andrew. I did order it, though. On first listening I was unimpressed. She has a lot of Sarah vocalizations and her songs aren't _that_ distinctive. But there was enough I liked the sound of that I played the disc again. And then again. And then a couple of the songs stuck in my head and took up residence, though there are still a couple of songs (like the first on the disc) that I skip. Overall, she's more pop than I usually like but while I don't find her as compelling or inventive as I do Splashdown, say, I still quite liked that disc. >While I haven't heard the disc, I saw her >in New Mexico last year and was decidedly unimpressed. As I said it took a couple of listens fo me to care about her stuff, and overall I don't think my life would be less rich for _not_ buying the disc, but I do like it, so I'm giving her more chances, and she has a deal on her web page where you can ordered her most recent disc and get her first one free, which appealed to me. And I'm really sure that people who miss Sarah's earlier work might get more enthusiastic about her than I am. She has a range of styles, a pretty voice, and decent material. And those among us who really like pop music might really like her. Anyway, I'm really interested to hear what Andrew thinks when he's had a chance to listen. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 22:36:09 -0800 From: Ken Blake Subject: Re: music in tv shows I wasn't able to read the story (it seems you have to be a member) so I may be off base here, but I would say that Miami Vice was the first show where music moved from the background into the foreground. In each show there would often be most of a song played at full volume with no dialog. Miami Vice I think only played well known artists so maybe this was why it was overlooked (not to mention that it's ecto content was probably zilch).
