Strangely enough, an old friend and I were just discussing Arson Garden over the weekend. He recently moved to Chicago, and the last I'd heard, April was doing graphic design work in that area and putting together Snacktime. I kept waiting to hear if April's band was going to put out an album, but it never happened. Dunno from whom you first heard about the band, but I suppose it might have been me -- I think my freshman year at Indiana University was the year that April (and others?) moved out of my dorm. I used to go see them play around Bloomington at various clubs and festivals, and they even played a show in my dorm's cafeteria at one point. Yes. Go seek their CDs. Crunch. Tasty. Necessary. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 15:11:39 +0100 (W. Apparently, they went from death metal with > groaning male vocals to prog metal with stunning female vocals. My > curiosity is piqued! This is true, so be sure to keep away from the albums that were done before "Mandylion"... Personally I'm not much into heavy metal music, and to my ears The Gathering are still in the first place a heavy metal band, though Anneke van Giersbergen does have a beautiful (perhaps even stunning) voice, strong and clear and powerfull. I think Glenn's review in twas gives a good description of "Mandylion", the only Gathering album I know. The official website for the Gathering is at http://www.gathering.nl/ No sound samples as far as I could see, but a lot of information about all their albums, provided by the band itself (that's in the "behind" section). In the "essential" section there is mention that they've just gone into the studio to record a new album that's supposed to be released later on in 2000. The new album "Superheat", that is to be released in the US next week (in Europe it was released last week) is a live album. CDNow does have some MPEG sound samples from "Superheat" (and real audio for other albums as well); search for "Gathering (metal)" in artist to find them easy. As for Splashdown, I've only listened to a few bits and pieces of their real audio samples (I can't get my new computer to connect long enough yet to download larger [mp3] files, or play r.a. ...), and from what little I heard I would agree with Neile's comparison to the Rainbirds, rather than seeing a connection to The Gathering. But maybe I should listen to Splashdown some more. Best wishes, Marion (Who's back, and who's still trying to compile a year end list for 1999; Neile, you're not alone in being late with this!). n.p. I just picked up her album, "Broken Things", and it's definitely ecto-fodder. She's more in the folk vein--Richard Shindell covers a song by her and partner Buddy Miller ("My Love Will Follow You--featuring backing vocals by Lucy and Dar) on his new album. "Broken Things" features guests Patty Griffin, Victoria Williams, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller (who sounds a lot like Tom Petty at times) and drummer Brady Blade. Definitely a great album--some really poignant songs like "I Still Cry" and "Broken Things"--which was covered by The Williams Brothers, and "All My Tears"-- which was covered by Emmylou Harris, and some real rockers as well. Great songwriting all around.0 Julie's voice reminds me of Jill Sobule at times, and sometimes of Mary Karlzen. Check it out. Yours is the first opinion I've read about this CD. It sounds like another good one. A few months ago, I heard Julie Miller (this album I think) in a music shop and went to ask the clerk who it was, commenting that it sounded quite a bit like Lisa Cerbone. He responded that no, it was Julie Miller, that he had never considered the Cerbone comparison, but that he could understand where I came up with it. Bowled over as I was that I'd found a clerk who knew who Lisa Cerbone is, it wasn't until much later that I'd actually seen Julie and Buddy in concert, opening for Cry Cry Cry! jeff n.p. _Jews with Horns_, Klezmatics ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 15:33:01 -0500 From: neal copperman Subject: Ectoguide comments - The Sundays In my usual burst of activity when moving, I am finally getting around to finishing off the ectoguide pages that I've had laying around. The pages I have is for the Sundays and Silly Sisters. If anyone would like to make a few comments, I'll incorporate them in. The Silly Sisters page doesn't look to bad, but The Sundays page is pretty skimpy. There are a handful of comments for Static and Silence, a smaller number for Blind, and none for Reading, Writing and Arithmatic. That seems a gross oversight to me, so if anyone wants to throw out some rowsing endorsements or reasons why they've always hated the Sundays, that'd be cool. neal np: 69 Love Songs - Magnetic Fields nr: old Story magazine ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 15:58:08 -0500 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Ectoguide comments - The Sundays My memory must really be going.
