Blend the voices of Maryanne Faithful and Sinead OConnor, add the song sensibilities of Sheryl Crow, then weave in the sonic texture and groove reminiscent of Seal colliding with Portishead, and youve come close to the dark, penetrating sound of kathleen yorks debut album bird. With her smokey vocals, intimate lyrics, haunting guitars and a rolling groove, bird covers subject matter as varied as a ten year old boys' obsession with film violence , a sixty five year old widow's new found isolation, and a Zap influenced song about clinical depression. York, a former Warner Chappell songwriter and current indie film actress (starring with such notables as Tom Waits, Diane Keaton, and Dennis Hopper) teamed up with producers Jamie Muhoberac (programmer and keyboard player for Seal, Trevor Horn) and with Grammy Award winning producer Larry Klein, (Shawn Colvin, Joni Mitchell), for the debut's single "Save Me". BAND_MEMBERS: Paul Bushnell (bassist for Edna Swap) Steve Caton (guitarist for Tori Amos) Jamie Muhoberac (keyboards for Seal) Larry Klein (bassist producer shawn Colvin, Joni Mitchell) Tal Bergman (drummer) Has anybody heard this album? Samples sound pretty good anyway. The new Luc Besson movie opens here soon..Go Milla! Anna Maria __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Ruth Wieder Magan's "Songs to the Invisible God" is a CD of a woman singing arrangements of songs from many Jewish traditions, alone and unaccompanied in a monastery in Jerusalem. Powerful stuff -- her lower range reminds me of a stronger Lisa Gerrard. Somewhat strange recording, a little hissy and with Magan sometimes far away from the microphone and sometimes (I think) spinning while singing, but it adds to the drama. Some weeks ago someone sent a message to the ectoguide email account suggesting we take a look at a band called Splashdown. I was online anyway, so I took a look at their website (http://splashdown.drawbridge.com) and downloaded some MP3s and right away ordered the available discs. If anyone is wishing Rainbirds would be more productive or easier to get in the U.S., well, this woman's voice is a dead-ringer for Katharina Franck, and the music is fairly Rainbirds-like, too (in other words, far-ranging, edgy but pretty, not the standard verse-chorus-verse but still melodic). Jim says she sounds like a cross between Franck and Dolores Riordan of The Cranberries. I mostly hear Franck, but what a voice! This will definitely be high on this year's list of discoveries. So far they have 2 eps and a short album, but one of the eps is a teaser for a major label album on Java/Capitol coming out later this year. Be ahead of the curve! This album is really good--I love the production (produced by one of my faves, Jay Joyce, of the band Iodine and he produced Patty Griffin's "Flaming Red") and her voice. There are a few songs that immediately caught my attention -- "Blue," "Before You," and "Soul Searching" and because I just have a dubbed tape I have listened to it all excessively yet but I'm going to order it. Secondly, thanks to whoever posted the Kristy Thirsk concert info. I will try to be there. I'll be in NYC on Monday anyway because... It's the FIRST day of my BRAND NEW JOB!!! That's right. I've been hired. (though because of the whole gateway discussion, I'll refrain from saying as what or where). But I'm very excited and wish to thank Neile and Bill Adler in particular for their support and encouragement. Did I already miss Sarah Slean's NYC concert, or is that still upcoming? Can someone let me know? I guess that's it for now. I promise musical content next time. :) A very happy JoAnn ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2000 20:05:13 -0500 From: Mark Miazga Subject: [Fwd: Magdalen Hsu-Li's 2000 Tour Schedule] This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------4C4D162C0DC2FB86F0E68391 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Highly recommended political piano rock. I only managed to catch the last half of Monday's show, which was plagued with sound problems thanks to a faulty guitar cable and a sound guy who wasn't exactly on the ball. Tara prevailed though, salvaging a fair enough set with her long-time partner Bill Bell on guitar and a new drummer who adds much to Tara's live show. Tonight she appeared with the same lineup but that's where the similarity ended. Her performance in front of a packed house of music industry people was nothing short of spectacular - one of the best I have ever seen from her despite the short 40-minute time limit. (Ah how I love NYC where they rush multiple acts through short sets at every club, to keep the people - and cash - flowing). Not only was she in top vocal form, but her musicians added just the right magic, and technically, the sound was terrific. To top it all off, Tara managed to squeeze a couple of rare gems into the set, rounded out by the strongest songs from her past and new CDs. Her song, 'Child', which by Tara's own admission she rarely performs any more was a real highlight for me, as was 'Red'. If Tara was hoping to sound (and look) like an up-and-coming artist with a bright future in front of her new record label , she most definitely succeeded! Now, JoAnn Whetsell wrote: >Hi.
