She fronted a band called Vardo in New York City, which consisted of drums, bass, and concert harp. They were one of the most exciting live bands in town a couple years ago, doing a mixture of trad folk, middle-eastern style grooves, yodeling songs, quasi-jazz, and a stunning cover of Kurt Weill's "Benares Song." Then they broke up, and Dawn moved to San Francisco. Vardo produced one EP-length cassette, and I have a cassette version of =Fawn's Fables= (note difference in spelling). The acoustic-guitar version of "The Muse" can't =begin= to suggest the (unrecorded) full-blown Vardo version. (Does it sound like I miss this band??) That sounds about right, though I don't hear much of the middle-eastern style. Perhaps that came mostly from someone else in Vardo. That's on-target enough that I'd like to edit it out (with the Vardo mention) for the ectophiles page. Is that ok Don? >Then they broke up, and Dawn moved to San Francisco. This recording, with the spelling difference you noted, is on CD. It's still pretty short though, around 35 minutes. There are 9 songs: 1. The Muse 2. A Lullaby for Konscious 3. Ode to Rejection 4. The Crumb that got away 5. Only a Miner 6. A Village Churchyard 7. Apple Trees 8. Sometimes I Pray 9. This Bliss The cd is in a handmade sleeve that gives the impression that it might be a preview copy as opposed to an official release. Then again, it could just be the modest packaging they plan on using. There appears to be know web presence associated with it (though I haven't actually searched yet), but it gives an e-mail address for Hans Wendl Productions (hwendl@there.net). Thanks for the info and hope mine helps too. neal np: Hand-Picked: 25 Years of Rounder Bluegrass (inspired by my having just read the City Paper article on Hazel Dickens getting her start in the thriving bluegrass community of Baltimore in the early 60's.) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 19:30:40 EST From: RocketsTail@aol.com Subject: New to the list Hi all! She played a gig in Vancouver last century which I missed, but bought "Kiss My Arp" a bit later. I like it. Very much chill room music. A bit dark, which works for me. I have mixed feelings about her vocals, though, and prefer tracks like Melodious Thunk which are a bit more accessible and less experimental. I definitely like her use of old 80s equipment (eg: the Arp keyboard mentioned in the title) in new ways, though. (I'm assuming you're not joking here, but I was under the impression that "Silence" is still getting tons of airplay) Yeah, it's off the last Delerium album, Karma, and was licensed for use with the movie soundtrack. It wasn't released as a single in North America, but it was in Europe. Karma came out in 1997 though I vaguely recall that one manufacturing run had a typo on the copyright date. Oh well. I just spoke to Bill Leeb a few minutes ago and he says they did not sample anything from Tori. Good enough for me. Finally, re: the Usenet gateway. For what it's worth, I personally don't like it much. I'm pretty sure I expressed as much the last time the question came up some years ago. I very much enjoy this album. In it Paula continues to show that she can be very good at navigating all corners of the "style" envelope. This album is a little jazz, a little rap, a little R&B, and a little Rock-n-Roll, all folded and blended neatly into an album that showcases her voice, and the multitude of instruments which the band plays. In fact, to me this album is less pop than "This Fire", and more accessible than "Harbinger", placing it at the top of a triad of efforts each with its own very unique flavor. While Paula's work in this album may be considered to be far apart from the latest works by, say, Happy Rhodes, it is nonetheless ecto material all the way, in my opinion. - - Bill G. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2000 00:06:04 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Sarah Slean at MIT (help?)
