I am pleased to invite you to a special concert taking place on January 16th. This show is special because of the artists and the enviroment in which it is presented. On January 16th at 5pm we are pleased to present a special double bill with Edie Carey & Nini Camps both from New York. If you want the basics you can scroll to the bottom. This concert is part of a homegrown series called Longfellow St. Concerts. Longfellow St. Concerts is a series of shows held in our home. Our goal is to present some of the best acoustic musicians in the business, in an intimate, comfortable enviroment. This type of show has long been the standard through the middle of the country where folk clubs are few and far between. For years artists like Greg Brown, Christine Lavin, and others have opted to play shows in peoples homes rather than risk playing a show in a local bar. Because we live in one of the richest music enviroments in the country we have been not been given the privelege of seeing artists in such a small, intimate setting. Because we saw how special some of these shows are, we decided to bring this unique experience of live music to the city. Our concerts have an attendace limit of 30 people making each show a special experience for audience and artist alike. It is very hard to describe how special these shows are. The only way to know what they are like is for you to come one. Once you have seen the joy in the artists faces you will never want to miss a show. Seeing an Edie Carey show is like watching someone read a diary of their deepest thoughts. Whether singing about an enveloping love, or talking about her childhood pet Edie has a wonderful ability to make you think you're sitting down with a life long friend. Her songs are overflowing with emotion. From the mother's grief of "Black Wool Dress" to the love, and joy of "I Never Thought I'd Say This" to the self loathing of "If I were you" Edie's songs take you on a complete emotional rollercoaster. "Edie Carey has the voice, the songs, and the presence that will take her right up alongside such stars as Shawn Colvin and Ani DiFranco," Matt Smith of Club Passim. "She effortlessly lures people into her musical spell, and then she continues to entrance when the music stops." http://www.folkweb.com/ediecarey http://www.mp3.com/ediecarey Nini combines the excitement of a rock concert, the intimacy of a diary, and the passion of a hot Miami night. Her songs rock with a passion, and intelligence rarely found in todays musicians. When she sings a song like "I Thought I Knew You," there is no doubt that you are hearing everything she has. Nini's songs range from a the love of "Mi Amor" to the NiNi Camps, a native of Miami, left the palm trees and espresso of her hometown for the concrete island of Manhattan in the early '90's. Before long, she was playing solo acoustic shows at the Bitter End and other NYC venues. Nini's folky, pop songwriting, laced with a hint of her Cuban heritage, attracted a large audience, as well as some of the best musicians in town. So, in the summer of 1997, NiNi formed her band, LOVE PIE! LOVE PIE's recently released, self-titled debut album has been receiving rave reviews as well as radio airplay. "Her songwriting is as solid as her guitar playing is sure...she rocks. Nini is at her best playing hard with style. Just good music." NiNi and her band were featured on the WB hit series, FELICITY, and they have also participated in several national promotional events with Levi's Jeans and Elle Magazine. http://www.lovepie.com So if this show sounds of intrest here are the details Details Performers: Nini Camps and Edie Carey Time and Date: 5pm January 16th 2000 Price: $10 admission Location: Boston MA Gegertha@tiac.net for more info, to make reservations, and for directions. Heather: The Ecto Trading Post is a Web-based bulletin board service where ectophiles may post CDs for trade or sale. I host the BBS on my Web server. The home page is at: http://www.wagill.com/tradingpost/ecto/ But, thanks to the doings of spammers, now you will need a user ID and password to view the pages; I can issue these to you. In the past we have had a flurry of trading activity at various times; I myself have sold a few discs through the BBS. Also, the BBS has a "mini mailing list" feature, where you can be automatically notified when something new has been posted on the BBS; you can sign up for this list right on the BBS. Nothing else, as far as I know. The AP song, "Beautiful Stranger" (a pretty decent track, IMO) won her the nod. Love this quote from Recording Academy prez Michael Greene: "The Academy voters dug deep to select nominees whose recordings demonstrate artistic achievement and long-term credibility in their respective genres." Yeah, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and the Backstreet Boys are just oozing with long-term credibility! I've got five words for you, gang: New Kids On The Block. BTW, the top nominee was Carlos Santana with 10, so look for another Bonnie Raitt/Eric Clapton-style sweep for a well-regarded veteran. But I'm pretty sure her new CD was released too late in the year for Grammy consideration. I remember Alanis' second album, released at the end of the year last year, wasn't eligible for the Grammy's last year. (I am, by the way, quite disappointed that she was nominated for anything for that album. She pretty much swept them with JLP, and SFIJ is such a superior album... oh well) mm - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 143 West Akers Hall, MSU East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 353-4936 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. I ordered Veda's _Here is a picture_ and Sarah Slean's _Blue Parade_ from hmv.com (I feel so naughty for finding Canadian releases somewhere so easy-to-access... I thought it was supposed to be more difficult to get the brilliant Canadian music I'm so addicted to...) and Kathleen Yearwood's _The Book of Hate_ (thanks, Neile) and Meira Asher's _Spears Into Hooks_ from Harmony Ridge and Kerri Simpson's _Vévé_ EP and her first full-length _The Arousing_ (thanks one more time, Neile) and, to the point of this email, Lauren Hoffman's second album, _From the blue house_. That album arrived today, and um I've listened to it 5 times already... it's just ridiculously good. The big thing with this album is that there is so little production getting in the way of the songs, and I think that's really ballsy of Lauren, just resting on the strength of the songs themselves, and wow, it works, because the songs are SO strong. Her phrasing and lyrics are immaculate as always, and now she's taking more definite ventures into jazz and just jazz chord harmonies in general... but she's not "jazz" per se, it's all very grimy still... on her website, she has this funny banner going all the way across the page that reads "punkcountrygothpoprockswingjazzfolkblues", and that about sums it up. But um I'm losing track of my POINT... *re-tracking* Oh, okay... anyhow... this new album is brilliant, go to http://www.pitch-a-tent.com/lauren/ and get your own copy, y'all. Mmm!
