Time to read the last xxx ecto mails and compile my best of 99 list. Unbelievable, but I nearly gave up buying CDs. I only bought one CD since October. I didn't find the time to listen to all the new stuff and the prices are too high. Spending 35 DM (17 US$) for a CD that I listen to only 3 or 4 times is too much. Garmarna - Vedergaellningen exciting mixture of folk and electronic. I don't know how often I listened to the first two tracks. David Sylvian - Dead Bees On A Cake Maybe his best and most ambitious album so far. Not a single bad song. Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream They are getting better and better. A masterpiece. Snakefarm - Songs From My Funeral Anna Domino is back. I rarely heard more unique and exciting cover versions. Emiliana Torrini - Love In The Time Of Science Debut album of the 21-year old daughter of an Icelandic woman and an Italian. Roland Orzabal and Alan Griffith from Tears For Fears produced the album, played most of the instruments and wrote two of the songs. Emiliana sounds like Bjoerk in her (Bjoerk's) quieter songs. Kym Brown - Pygmalion all is said about this (much too short) album. Tori Amos - To Venus And Back Much better than the Choirgirl Hotel. Yello - Motion Picture Yello went back to their roots and away from the stupid techno sound of their recent work. Haunting soundscapes for a head movie. Lamb - Fear Of Fours this has been discussed enough. The Fixx - 1011 Woodland The Fixx are alive and reworked their favorite songs from the past. Excellent acoustic versions from a mature band. With these recordings they'll definitely get rid of their 80s image. Runners up: Paul Haslinger - Score Kondo/Bernocchi/Laswell - Charged Sophie B. Hawkins - Timbre Jethro Tull - j-tull dot com Afro Celt Sound System - Volume 2: Release Disappointment of the year: Jansen/Barbieri/Karn - _Ism their most uninspired work todate, even the singing is bad. Best wishes, Dirk ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2000 09:40:16 -0800 (PST) From: Damon des Jumeaux Subject: new stuff! ... and hector zazou and guide bugs hello! hey, has anyone got/heard the new hector zazou offering? some sort of `irish roots' thing released in 1998? any thoughts? i really love _sahara blue_ and _chansons des mers froids_... am wondering if i'd automatically like the new one or not? well, it's been an insane boxing day week here so far... all the cd stores have 20-25% off everything type sales, and they've been *packed* so i simply can't stay inside very long, being as uncomfortable in crowds as i am. nonetheless, i've managed to snag a whole bunch o' new stuff and drain the old wallet rather badly... to wit: varttina, _seleniko_: wow. am i ever glad i took advantage of the 20% off to finally buy one of their albums (they're on the expensive side here). the only varttina i'd heard thus far was the track off hector zazou's _chansons des mers froids_ which i quite liked. i figured i'd like their other stuff, and i was right. i actually went back to grab another one or two but they'd all disappeared except the second album (blackbird... i guess the title was translated) which according to the guide entry isn't tremendously good...) can't stop listening to this one. i especially like the oo-ee-oos on track 5 for some reason... they're so happy and exuberant. i think that sums up a lot of the album for me, and happy exuberant music is not something i generally gravitate towards. nor is a lot of `traditional folk' stuff. with varttina it all seems to work for me. :) dead can dance, _within the realm of a dying sun_: classic dcd, and i'm glad i bought this one second (the only other dcd i own is _aion_, still my favourite). i hadn't heard _within the realm..._ before, though i've heard a lot of other dcd. i've never been certain where to begin on my own dcd collection, and prices are generally high enough on their stuff here (who knows why) to discourage me. though i knew i had to have _aion_. WTR is much more sombre, less bouncy somehow. glad i picked it up. i think from what i've heard it stands a good chance of being my second favourite, though i haven't heard their other stuff much in the past year or two, so it's hard to tell... jane siberry, _bound by the beauty_: i seem to have undergone something of a reversal with jane; previously, although i *liked* her music and owned most of her cds (what self-respecting canadian wouldn't?? ;) i had never really `gotten into' it... just something pleasant to listen to occasionally. recently i found myself going through the siberry section of my collection and really starting to feel interested by it, so i finally picked up bbtb for $6. i think `everything reminds me of my dog' is one of her quirkiest tracks, and that's saying a lot. orbital, _snivilisation_: again, another disc i would've picked up earlier but for the high price. excellent stuff... i think it's now my favourite orbital, aside from _middle of nowhere_. the sideshow theme (not to mention the *title*) of `i wish i had duck feet' is hilarious. lots of weird samples and nifty sounds. vangelis, _albedo 0.39_: i occasionally pick up a vangelis disc while i'm out cd shopping, and this one was cheap. nice '70s electronica... actually, it's interesting to compare this with _snivilisation_; you can definitely hear a logical evolution there. albedo contains a lot of sounds that might seem a little cheesy now, but is still a good disc to listen to when in the mood for floating on nifty electronic sounds. weird al, _bad hair day_: what can you say, it's weird al! :) other recent acquisitions: garbage, _version 2.0_: avoided this for a *looong* time as the first one was a real exception for me... as in, i couldn't believe i liked it so much, and i was afraid the second one would lack whatever unusual quality the first one had that made me like it. then a friend got it so i had a listen and as it turns out, about the only thing it lacks over the first one is any significant difference. still, i liked it a lot, so i put it on my christmas list... :) portishead, _dummy_: another one i'd been interested in from mentions on ecto, but not heard until a co-worker brought it in one day. excellent stuff. seems to me like a fusion of various musical styles i might not like much individually (jazz and a tinge of rap stylings come to mind) but together and with portishead's special stamp it all works for me. definitely good music to sit in a dark room with. arrogant worms, _dirt_: don't know if i already mentioned this one here; the worms had their regularly scheduled vancouver visit a couple of months ago, which was as usually a blast. though i must say it's scary how popular they're getting. still, fame hasn't yet caused them to abandon their trademark style, bantering among themselves, good-humouredly abusing the audience, and generally causing side-splitting all around. their latest album, _dirt_, continues in the worms vein and is definitely recommended for people who like them! i think the most ecto-related song would have to be `celine dion' - she'll sing a song in english then she'll sing en francais both the songs will suck... but i loooove her anyway... oh celine dion you soft rock my world won't you please by my celiiiine... etc :) so, to go with all this new (and old) music, what should i do on new year's eve but... go out and buy $1000 worth of speakers and amp? jmlab tantal 507s coupled with a NAD C340. sounds excellent, though of course i'm replacing a 10-year-old sony ghetto blaster, so *anything*'s going to sound good. these were the best in my price range after quite a bit of auditioning, though. (with my memory i'm a little worried i might have forgotten the sound going from one store to the next, but i'm pretty certain.) looks like i'm an official entry-level audiophile now. ;) i just noticed steve's comment here: > I can't believe it took me this long to look at the ectoguide, > but I just spent an hour I probably should have spent doing > something else just browsing around in it. The look is wonderful > (in both Netscape and Lynx, which I especially appreciate) and heh, glad you like it... i try to keep things as legible in lynx as i can, despite not using it too often anymore myself... i think partly it's just ingrained now, though it's also a conscious thing. sometimes netscape's buggy unix version annoys me enough i go back to lynx for a while... here's hoping something better is coming along soon! oh my. just found a century bug in the guide. fixed now! ;) well, thus ends damon's annual post... - -damon Damon Harper des Jumeaux _/\_ "If you continue running damon@jumeaux.bc.ca __\ /__ Windows, your system may become Les Jums: jumeaux@jumeaux.bc.ca \ / unstable." http://www.jumeaux.bc.ca/damon/ |/||\| - Windows 95 BSOD ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2000 21:06:41 +0100 From: "Dirk Kastens" Subject: Re: new stuff! ... and hector zazou and guide bugs Hi Damon, > hey, has anyone got/heard the new hector zazou offering? some sort of > `irish roots' thing released in 1998? any thoughts? i really love > _sahara blue_ and _chansons des mers froids_... am wondering if i'd > automatically like the new one or not?
