Subject: Non-cheesy millennium music?Hi folks, I'll be having a bit of a bash this New Years Eve, and as well as the standard musical fare (Prince's "1999", Pulp's "Disco 2000" etc.) I'mhoping to be able to put on some other interesting but millennium-relatedmusic for my guests to listen to while the fireworks explode over Sydney Harbour Bridge. Any suggestions?Cheers,Martin I think Abba's Happy New Year is nice, even if it might be cheesy. On the non-cheesy side there's Tricky's album Pre-Millennium Tension which is a bit dour but does feature the lovely Makes me Wanna Die. Hmm..that's all I can think of really. Oh and french ecto..Mylene Framer is great. She was once described as the french Kate..She is very poppy but has done darker stuff as well. Her best albums are L'autre and Ainsi soit Je.The latter has a very eerie version of Baudelaire's L'Horloge. And a tribute to Edgar Allan Poe. My favorite verse? "Winter's getting cooler, summer's getting hotter, wishing well's wishing for another drop of water, And Mother Earth's blushing 'cause somebody caught her making love to the man in the moon. Tell me how you gonna keep 'em down on the farm, Now that outer space has lost its charm. Somebody set off the burglar alarm, And not a moment too soon." (I was quite pleased to see the Minneapolis Star Tribune did a story about the song, complete with lyrics and a realaudio link. You can find it here: http://www.startribune.com/stOnLine/cgi-bin/article?thisSlug=goovar ) And a good version of Auld Lang Syne, of course. I like Kate Taylor's version ( http://www.katetaylor.com/ ) 'cuz it's folky and stuff, but I also like the old chestnuts like the version from Guy Lombardo orchestra, etc. For what it's worth, - -- Laurel Krahn (laurel@windowseat.org) www.windowseat.org "The Twentieth century is almost over, almost over, almost over The Twentieth century is almost over, all over the world." - Steve Goodman ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 13:06:45 -0600 From: Amy Lotsberg Subject: RE: Millennium music Laurel wrote: >(I was quite pleased to see the Minneapolis Star Tribune did a >story about >the song, complete with lyrics and a realaudio link. I read that the Cities 97 Program Manager is named Mike Wolf. This is the name of someone I went to college with, we were roommates for a short time, even. But I had lost touch with him. I had been trying to find him for years. I sent an email to this Mike to see if it was my lost lost friend. I hope it is! I'm not sure what I would make of a Loreena McKennitt version, though I'd probably love it if it were done in the style of her "Greensleeves." Of course, already having the definitive version from Susan, there's really no reason for Loreena to bother. ;-) jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 16:01:55 EST From: Maeve421@aol.com Subject: quick question Heyla all. Yes, it is Loreena's rendition of Greensleeves that got me hooked on her in the first place, a few years ago when I got _The Visit_ as a present. > Of course, already having the definitive version from Susan, there's > really no reason for Loreena to bother. ;-) Of course. :) - - B. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 18:38:36 -0500 From: dave Subject: Millennium music.. I had ordered Tori's "Glory of the 80's" CD-single, advertised as containing Live tracks of "Baker, Baker" and "Winter" as well. When I played the disc, instead I found Live versions of a track CDDB reports as "Blue Raincoat" and "Twinkle", at 5:24 and 2:48 in length, respectively. The CD and the tray liner both list Baker Baker and Winter, at 3:53 and 6:59. Has anyone else discovered this? My CD was shipped from Sweden, but appears to be a U.K. import. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 19:18:03 EST From: FAMarcus@aol.com Subject: samson does anyone know if samson is still in business and if so, what are they doing with any of their acts??? do they have plans? is Happy a part of their plans? are they full of crap? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 16:57:55 -0800 (PST) From: John Drummond Subject: glory of the 80s misprints etc Y'all, The whole deal with the EastWest misprints of the "glory of the 80s" singles caused a rather large stink in England, apparently... there was all kinds of difficulty in manufacturing, apparently, and so I believe all of the singles are similarly-erroneous. If you want more information, take a gander at the Dent (http://tori.by.net), the biggest fan-run Tori Amos information site... this may as well be official site, in that it has a fairly huge network of people who report every little Tori-related smidgen of information directly to Mikewhy, the Dent's administrator guy. He has detailed pages on almost everything concerning Tori, and the "glory of the 80s" misprints got a lot of attention. Instead I found that there was a top tier of truly great albums and then a lot of very good ones below that, so I didn't end up making it to ten on the best of the year list after all. Anyway, in no particular order... Kristen Hersh -- Sky Motel Kristin is, as always, unbelievably brilliant. Emily Bezar -- Four Walls Bending I was expecting another great album from Emily... but not quite this great. My favorite of her releases to date. Veda Hille -- You Do Not Live In This World Alone I had heard most of the material live, so I knew I was going to love the CD when it was released. Fiona Apple -- When The Pawn... I really did not expect Fiona Apple to come out with an album this great in 1999. It blew me away during the first listen and for the last month or so has probably spent more time in my CD player than any other CD. Sleater-Kinney -- The Hot Rock Another great effort from Sleater-Kinney, this time with a bit more variety than was evident on Dig Me Out. Kym Brown -- Pygmalion Many thanks to all on ecto who recommended Kym... this is a really wonderful album. Kristeen Young -- Enemy Wow. Lunasa -- Otherworld I'm not sure if I like it quite as much as their first release, but it's a damn fine album all the same. Close, but not quite: Tori Amos -- To Venus And Back I love the live CD. I'm pretty underwhelmed by the studio CD. Sarah Slean -- Blue Parade Some really brilliant stuff mixed in with some... umm... less brilliant stuff. Mary Lydia Ryan -- Diaphanous I like it quite a bit, but it hasn't completely clicked with me yet. Perhaps tomorrow I'll write something about my favorite concert experiences of 1999...
