My daughters are taking French in school, and I thought it would be fun to hear somebody who sounds Mary Fahl-like in French. We were listening to the car radio yesterday and some song in French popped on; my kids perked up and enjoyed the music. Any thoughts anyone has on a French singer or group that sounds like October Project, Happy Rhodes, Susan McKeown, Jennifer Paige, Lori Lieberman, Marti Jones, Sara Hickman --you get the idea-- please let me know. - --Bill n.p. Charles and Karen are still struggling to pay for treatment. . . brad NP Tori Amos _To Venus..._ NR Annie Dillard _For the Time Being_ Press Release- Original comic book page art, paintings for science fiction and fantasy book covers, 1950's Batman art, famous artist sketches and 'Stardust' character interpretations from over 44 professional artists are some of the items being offered December 27-31, 1999 on the eBay internet auction site to benefit the Karen Shaffer Recovery Fund. Renderings of Batman, Conan, Spider-man, Scully & Maulder, wizards, angels, fairies, Martians, Nexus, X-men, Stardust characters, grave diggers, barbarians, and 2 shuttle repairmen are depicted in a variety of oil paintings, watercolors, pen-and-ink drawings, pencil sketches, and even sculpture for this special auction. Some of the artists who have contributed their stunning talents to this cause include: Sergio Aragonés (MAD magazine), Dennis Nolan (award-winning children's book artist), Bruce Timm & Dick Sprang (Batman artists from the 50's and 60's TV show), Roger Dean (known for 'Yes' album covers), Frank Frazetta (renown for Tarzan), Tony diTerlizzi (Magic Cards artist), highly respected comic artists Terry Moore, Jeff Smith (rare!), and George Pratt; fantasy painters Rick Berry, Michael Kaluta, and of course, Charles Vess. In July 1998, Karen Shaffer, regional arts activist and wife of artist/illustrator Charles Vess, sustained a serious spinal cord injury in a car accident that initially left her paralyzed. After months of hospitalization, rehabilitation, hard work and many people's prayers, she is walking again, but Charles and Karen were left with staggering hospital bills. With no health insurance, the cost for ongoing care for spinal cord-related medical problems, therapies, and medicines continue to spiral. This is the first of two auctions for the Recovery Fund, this being the Art portion. The second in January will include books and music. Many artists and writers have kindly donated signed first edition books and reader's proofs, rare paperbacks, hardbacks, and original artwork to be auctioned for Karen's benefit. Please bid generously, because you are not only bidding for this item, but helping two wonderful people. To look over the gallery and list of items, go to www.eBay.com on the Internet and insert "comic art" in the 'What Are You Looking For?' box. You may also click the SEARCH option in the navigation bar, then click on 'Seller.' Fill in TheGreenman in the seller box. The eBay auction assistance was provided by Jill Sunderlin of Abingdon, Va., and Paul and Linda Champanier, of Stamford, Conneticut. I've heard that it's been played on KFOG in San Francisco and probably some other places (a full radio onslaught is coming in January, I hear), but haven't heard anything about the actual song. Has anyone heard it and be able to describe it? Inquiring minds want to know. - -- Mark (The world's biggest Tracy Chapman fan) NP: Kristin Plater, "Dreaming in Pink" (A early Jewel-esque singer/songwriter originally from here in Michigan, now residing and performing in Boston. Check out her homepage at http://www.geocities.com/kristinplater/, and download a few of her mp3's if you want to hear a great voice and some really cool songs). NR: Snow Falling on the Cedars (Christmas gift) JGDR (Just Got Done Reading): Maggie Estep's "Soft Maniacs", a really excellent work. Fans of her spoken word poetry should really check this out. It's an engrossing collection of interrelated short stories all about two women leading sort-of-connected lives. Estep writes through the voice of the men who pass through their lives. It's funny and moving, and Estep's got one of the most distinctive literary voices I've ever read. She may not have the greatest range (time will tell...), but both of her books so far have been fantastic. Word is that she's making another spoken word CD soon... but it will be quite different from either of her albums (both have been discussed on ecto before; she's got her own Ectoguide entry at http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/guide.cgi?alpha/e/estep.maggie), as it will be a spoken word OPERA based on the characters in her next novel. Should be interesting. Anyhow, "Soft Maniacs" is highly recommended; check out http://www.maggieestep.com for more on her. - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 143 West Akers Hall, MSU East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 353-4936 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse.
