Yeah, um... I was really expecting something much more unique as well... Heather Duby has a gorgeous voice and interesting enough lyrics (though occasionally they flop right on their faces right down into the dirt), and the her melodies are often absolutely perfect... but I was thinking it'd be more inventive as far as instrumentation etc... but now I just look as it as a vocal album with beats, and I'm much more satisfied with it. I'll try to limit my top 10 (or 12)to 1999 releases, but it may be difficult, as I ended up buying a lot of older albums that I just became aware of this year. 1. Mary Lydia Ryan - Diaphanous - Got to plus this one yet again--a real surprise. I've gone back to listen to her debut album and have found some great songs on it as well, but it cerrtainly didn't make the impression this one did. 2. Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs Quirky, fun, and incredibly varied--these 69 songs cover just about every aspect of love. Favorite songs: Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits, Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side, When My Boy Walks Down the Street, but they're all good. 3. Cher - Believe Occassionally a pop song will come along that is just so infectious you can't believe it. Luckily for Cher, it happened for her--who It hink deserved it. If you like the song, you'll like the album-- it's basically variations on the same techno theme, but I still like it. In fact, I'm amazed I'm not completely sick of it, considering the number of times I've heard it. 4. Margot O'Breslin - this came out a year or two ago, but I'd sure never heard of it until people on ecto began to talk about it. Love her piano playing, her timing, her sense of rhythm, lyrics, etc. Kind of Tori Amos meets Billy Joel or Elton John. 5. Lone Justice - The World is Not My Home Ahh, any Maria McKee is a good thing--and this a great collection of early tracks, live stuff, etc. 6. Lynn Miles - Night in a Strange Town A discovery I made this year through my mother. Great folk singer--though I think I'd recommend her first album, Slightly Haunted, even more than this one. 7. Sarah Brightman - Fly This album came out in Europe last year, and is only available in the U.S. as an import. I can't help but like Sarah Brightman's voice, and I find this more techno collection of music much more interseting than her latest U.S. release, Eden. Plus, she covers Stina Nordenstam. 8. I Wanna Be Kate - Various Artists - This album probably came out last year too, but I didn't get around to picking it up until June of this year. Sure, none of the artists sing as well as Kate, but this collection is surprisingly well-rounded and you can feel the reverence the performers feel for Kate--even if they take her songs in entirely different directions. 9. Veda Hille - You Do Not Live in This World Alone I think I would have preferred a "prettier" album from Veda, but this one is certainly intriguing and Veda's lyrics never cease to amaze me. Plus there are some beautiful moments. 10. Sarah Slean - Blue Parade This album took a while to grow on me, and still seems a bit of a disappointment, but there is some beautiful stuff on here, and Sarah sure shows promise. I hope we'll be hearing from her for a long time. I think we will. 11. Rebecca Timmons - The Turing Event I think Rebecca Timmons is great--she has such a distinct voice and sound. 12. Jewel: Joy: A Holiday Collection What can I say, I can't help it--I like her. Her voice has never sounded better--the second half of this album is really incredible. Other Honorable Mentions: Eurythmics - Peace Solid album from a great group. Ann Hampton Callaway - Easy Living Great jazzy album from one of the best vocalists Linda Eder - It's No Secret Anymore Big, bold brassy and Broadway - but incredibly infectious--particularly the Havana numbers. Ricky Martin meets Broadway. Lamb - Fear of Fours Interesting album, though hasn't really grown on me yet. Kym Brown - Grows on me more with every listen, but has yet to capture me emotionally Tori Amos - To Venus and Back A couple of the live pieces are transcendant, but the new material, while interesting, just doesn't wow me--which for Tori, comes as a letdown. Blondie - No Exit A really solid Blondie album. Got a lot of grief for it's wide variety of music, but to me that seemed entirely consistent with Blondie's history. I just love to hear Debbie Harry sing though-- such power and brings back so many good memories. Joy Eden Harrison - Unspoken Odd little album--a departure from her first album--can definitely feel Cindy Lee Berryhill's influence, but a great collection of songs. Garbage - Version 2.0 Probably the most interesting "mainsream" band playing. Love how they riff so many other artists, particularly Chrissy Hynde on "Special". New Radicals - Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too Another solid fun album--and from a male singer! Still have trouble not comparing them to World Party. Best New Artists: Dido - No Angel proved dto be a very promising debut. Will be interesting to see what kind of future she has. Best Soundtrack Run Lola Run - One of the few other techno albums I can listen to in its entirety. Great movie too! Biggest Disappointment: Everything But the Girl - Tempermental I liked Cher's techno-pop album, but this album just gets annoying--can barely listen to it all the way through. Things I've bought but haven't listened to enough yet: Emily Bezar - 4 Walls Bending--just got it, hasn't made much of an impression but it took a while for her others to as well. I just picked up Moon in Grenadine this year and it's just now beginning to click. Fiona Apple - Pawn thing Interesting album--hasn't sunk in yet. Like her lyrics, her voice usually takes a while to work for me though. Musical Find of the Year - Haris Alexiou (actually I think I discovered her through Di Efchon last year), but this year I picked up 4 more albums and absolutely love them all. Have E! (Hey!), Live 92-97, The Game of Love, and Nefelis St. '88. Gets my vote for global diva. Check her out at www.greekmusicusa.com. Funnest Older Album I've Picked up in a While: The Best of Ramsey Lewis - Ramsey Lewis Trio Jazzy swing pop - Incredibly infectious, I dare you to sit still through the entire album! It does get a little repitious at times, but a lot of fun. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Dec 1999 12:49:56 -0500 (EST) From: joann.whetsell@oberlin.edu (JoAnn Whetsell) Subject: Re: year end top ten Joe Zitt wrote: >Well, here we go again... but would someone be interested in capturing >and tallying these lists? Breakfast in New Orleans. I was just looking at it last night as I moved my 'to be listened to again' stack(s) off of the computer, thinking I need to put it back into listening cycling. (It was one of those situations where I bought several CDs at the same time, liked this one quite a bit, but was more strongly taken by a couple of the other discs; Breakfast got relegated to less frequent listening of that batch, and migrated down in the stack) It came out several months ago, I think. This came up cause I told Susan that every time I hear "In London So Fair" (a song about a woman who dresses up as a man so she can become a sailor to be with her true love), I expect, when the woman is discovered, that the sailor's will bemoan the fate of their ship and toss her out in the ocean. Instead, she gets to marry her true love and live happily ever after, and even though I know the song well, I still expect something different to happen. She said that she was recording a song on the Bushes and Briars follow-up (the forthcoming traditional album) that also involved an undercover woman sailor who has a worse fate, so perhaps I'd be more satisfied with that one. Apparently, in this song, the ship is being battered in a storm and the sailor's draw straws to decide who to sacrifice. The woman loses, but she wouldn't tell me how the story ends. Gotta wait for the album. >'Twas a great show tonight, featuring several "brand new" traditional >bits which will be on the upcoming acoustic album, as well as some >faves from various places. It was a wonderful show. I thought Susan's voice was about as beautiful as I've ever heard it. I was completely flabbergasted by the number of people I knew who showed up. I had invited 4 people, and I knew some of them were not coming, and others were bringing people. But 8 people (mostly from work) showed up, which is completely unprecedented. And only one of them had ever heard Susan before. >A fabulous evening. And it was nice to get a chance to actually >talk to Susan, who was quite gracious and charming. I thought she said something about earlier next year... maybe April? but I don't really remember. (I said "I'm glad you brought up an album. I was going to do that myself. After all, it's been something like 7 months since you put out an album, so I thought you were overdue.") But I was very excited about the prospect of a follow-up to Bones. Though I think she's been talking about that for a while. She did say she was going to use the same designers who did Bones and Through The Bitter Frost and Snow to design the new album, and that she has the actual artwork on the fold-out cover of Bones in her living room. >Nope, John wasn't there. They had one song on the Folk Alliance sampler from last year that is just breathtaking, and the new album has a cover of Through The Bitter Frost and Snow on it (which I saw them do in Albuquerque). Greg seemed alright at the show, but I thought he was going to fall over later. I don't think he was much help on the drive home. Susan also mentioned a band called Oregon. ANyone know anything about them? She said they were really great, and that she was using their bass player on the new album. >The venue was a smallish unitarian church in the middle of the woods >out in Prince Georges county. Well, I could understand that big fans of Robin might not be into Susan. I think Robin is an excellent musician, but I'm not all that into his music. Several of my friends bought some of his discs. I've seen him before, but I don't go out of my way. he plays with Helicon, who have a huge local following. Glad you had a good time Doug, though you could have had a relatively similar experience with us, since Susan spent most of the between song break chatting with Jeff and I (until the people looking for autographs got impatient with us). Afterwards, one of my friends gave me directions to the Tastee Diner. Susan said they wanted to grab a bite to eat before driving back to New York, but the diner was 15 minutes the wrong way, and she didn't seem to be buying it. I went with a friend, and about 10 minutes later, Susan and her friends (Gary, Al Pettaway and Amy White [more local accoustic musicians who I haven't seen perform for about 3 years, but are also quite good], and a Scottish guy whose name I forgot) showed up at the diner. We joined their table and had an entertaining evening. The most amusing parts that I recall were Susan's being excited that I had ordered a milk shake, and deciding to order one of her own. This was only the second milk shake she'd ever had! (milkshakes are a staple in my diet.) And the other was the Scottish guy talking about how he had gone to someone's house who served a vegetarian haggis. Oh, and somewhere I learned that Susan is going to be touring with Johnny Cunningham, doing a set that will be half Bushes & Briars (and the new traditional stuff) and half Peter & Wendy. Johnny is supposedly working up a whole dramatic reading version for the show, though that is pretty much what he did at that show in New Bedford a year or so ago (though not so much at their show together in Berkeley). Ok, I think I've warn out that topic. neal np: nothing - cd player got stuck :( ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #402 **************************
