I'm going away on vacation and want to keep my mailbox as empty as possible... So unfortunately I'll miss the long-awaited Velvet Belly concerts in the Netherlands :-( (though I do hope to be able to finally buy a copy of "Lucia" when I'm back). I'll also miss everybody's year-end lists, which I'm always looking forward to very much. But I'll probably read all the digests I missed from the archives. I'll probably be back early in the new year - and I might even attempt to write a belated year-end list when I return. :-) Best wishes, Marion n.p. It's not a step back toward their cabaret style, but a move toward heavy guitar rock! Their trademark harmonies and humor is intact, but the music is quite a bit different with lots of distorted, electric guitar. And a terrific ditty called "Naughty Nadia" featuring voice and cello. It took me a bit to get used to the jarring change of musical style, but it has grown on me quite a bit. For most of the items on amazon.com, they're keeping like 1% to 20% -- 80% to 99% of the price is what they're being charged by the distributor. The one exception is the CDs they take direct from small artists and small labels, where the markups go a little crazy! Very cool and unusual... :) Jessica www.aquezada.com/jess ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Dec 1999 21:12:32 -0500 From: meredith Subject: tori at the jingle bell jam Hi! Last night Tori Amos headlined the Jingle Bell Jam at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT (the local "modern rock" radio station's big holiday concert thingie). After some waffling back when tickets went on sale, woj and I decided we'd go, so there we were. So how was it, you ask? As the aliens on the Simpsons would say: "Holy fnurking schnitt!!!!" First, I had NO IDEA Tori would be playing solo until I got into the auditorium and saw just a piano on the stage. This was probably a good thing, since if I had known that in advance, I would've been a sorry quaking mess of anticipation for the entire day (or week, or month, for that matter), instead of just the 20 minutes it took for them to get the microphone cabling problems sorted out and actually get her on the stage. Second, SHE PLAYED "HONEY"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I've mentioned here before that "Honey" is my favorite song by anyone, ever. I've only seen her perform it once before, and ever since when I go to a Tori show I hopehopehope she'll play it, then when she doesn't I somehow feel like the show was a disappointment, even if it really was an incredible set otherwise. It's sort of my Holy Grail, and I know that if I hear it I'll go home happy no matter what else happens. Well, that's what happened last night. The rest of the set was incredible too, but she could've left the stage right after she was done with that song and I would've been floating just as high off the ground as I walked out the door. Here's what else she played: Smells Like Teen Spirit Bliss Thank You Mary Take to the Sky Concertina Frog on My Toe Honey Spring Haze Little Drummer Boy/Hey Jupiter Yes Anastasia Juarez Encore: Landslide Black Swan I figure it had been just about 5 years since last I saw Tori do a full show completely solo, and for the most part last night was like going back in time. It was like she'd decided to revist some old friends and bring the rest of us along for the ride. ("Take To The Sky"?!? Come ON!!!) The new songs, though, were great. "Spring Haze" was transcendent on just the piano, and "Juarez" was a revelation. I'd been wondering in the back of my mind whether she would play it, in light of the rather gruesome discovery that was made down there earlier this week. She started by reaching into the piano and banging on the strings themselves, alternating that with hitting a few notes on the keys. It was quite a spectacular effect. The rest of the song worked wonderfully without the band, too, but it was particularly cool to see her doing funky things with the piano like that. I'm not even going to get started on the audience, though. I'll just say that if I'd known ahead of time that asking the couple behind me to *please* shut the @&!* up was going to piss them off enough so that they'd leave, I'd have done it after the first song and not waited until before the second-to-last. :P I can't say much about the three opening bands (Vertical Horizon, Marcy Playground, and Ben Harper) because woj and I were out in the lobby/atrium area until it was time for Tori to go on. I do know that I wouldn't have been enjoying myself at all if I'd been in my seat for those three sets. It's rare that I read a review of an album I know well that makes me go back and listen to it in a different light, but that's exactly what your Veda review did. Now I'm finding the electronic noodlings and bleeps and bloops a necessary part of the whole, and not just an annoyingly itrusive, bad production decision. And I agree 100% with your assessment of Emily's album, too. A colleague at work is a *huge* Dream Theater fan, and I'd been thinking of having him give it a listen. He made me listen to the new Dream Theater album the last time I was out at his location, and there are several moments in _Four Walls Bending_ that remind me of it in certain ways. It was particularly interesting to read the reviews of Veda and Emily juxtaposed together, because my dream double-bill would be to see the two of them on the same stage. (I know at least one other person agrees with me ... Sue Trowbridge took care of getting Emily a tape of Veda's stuff, and I gave Veda a tape of Emily's stuff, but to this day I have no clue if Veda ever listened to it or not.
