It's been out for a month or more I think, but I still haven't >managed to see it. *sigh* I heard from a friend that it's been showing on daytime television quite a lot lately, as well as one of those prime-time cop shows like Law & Order or The Practice or something like that (which I never watch, so I wouldn't know). I also saw it on Felicity exactly once, but alas had to tape over it the next week. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Nov 1999 11:06:42 -0800 From: "Drew Harrington" Subject: Things for Ectophilic (and otherwise) music fans to do in Dec. Hey all, I hadn't intended to make this a monthly thing, but there are a couple very interesting things going on in the bay area that you bay area folks might want to know about. The BIG one is a very rare show by Joy Askew at Borders. I think this is a free show, but I'm not sure. That makes this Dec. 4th one of the best show days this year with the "Glad I'm a Girl" Benefit within driving distance and time afterward. (God I'm so glad they don't conflict - hope Joy's not running late.) Disclaimer: In this case I'm so biased even I know I shouldn't be trusted! Povi are Crista Calero and Carmen Rizzo. Crista is an Australian musician and my long-time idol, my personal Goddess in fact. I completely lost track of her for a couple of years until she emerged with this new project, that's why I'm so happy and definitely NOT objective! They are a strange couple. Crista has a long history of playing very loud, harsh, out-there music, while Carmen worked with people like Seal, Fiona Apple and Alanis Morisette. Those two conflicting influences can be felt throughout this album, but it all works out well, in fact a bit of polishing and taming might be exactly what Crista's music needs. As they bring in their respective strengths we end up with sound clearly well-produced and smooth but still alive with emotion. There is a fair bit of variety: "Dragonflies", the single, is the most poppy moment. Techno-ish "Creatures" would not be out of place on the soundtrack to "Run Lola Run" (great movie, BTW - I'm suprised it didn't get mentioned on Ecto!). "Red" might be my favourite; its structure, lyrics and even Crista's voice bring Garbage to mind... "Place in the Sun" starts sounding like something out of an EBTG record, but then the distorted chorus kicks in just in time to save it :) Then there are a couple of tracks perhaps more in Portishead-land, and a couple of bits reminding me of Lamb, as well... just like on "Fear of fours" a trumpet appears a couple of times, but there's no double bass this time... For all of that, Povi sounds like Povi, and Crista's voice while not as HUGE as I know it can be is still distinct and, for me, one of the best things about this record. I think "Volcanoes" are a really good effort, but don't take my word for it. Since it came out on Nettwerk, it should be reasonably easy to find so give it a shot if you have a chance! PS. The mp3 of "Dragonflies" can be downloaded from http://www.nettweb.com/nettwerk/owa/nett_radio7.all_mp3s, where you'll also find the link to Povi's page on Nettwerk site. np: Guess! - ------------------------------------------------------ "Macintosh for Productivity, Linux for Development, Palm for Mobility, and Windows for Solitaire." - - spotted on a t-shirt @ macsurfshop.com - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #392 **************************
