As others have mentioned, this tour was a wonderful, and probably one-shot, may never occur again ever, deal. Such is the apparent nature of Project Lo. Consider LO to be a mnemonic for Law and Order, like the NBC TV show, and the fact that it perseveres despite a constantly shifting cast. That's what Project Lo is about. This time out, it featured Happy Rhodes, and quite prominently. The band was a trio in Albany, just Bon, Hanny and Happy. The set list was identical to the one posted earlier, with Collective Heart as the only encore, but no Station, whatever that was. I have the Black Canvas CD, and just recently acquired another Lo CD (sans HR, of course) but was not too familiar with it. Bon is a more impressive guitarist live than Canvas reveals. Not that he's showy, he's one that impresses with how effortlessly he produces that very tasteful guitar work. Hanny (Hansford Rowe to all you who didn't attend one of these shows) (and not the actor of the same name, BTW) is a wonderful bassist. I've been familiar with his work for years with the Pierre Moerlen incarnation of the French space rock band Gong, who I had never seen. He too was an amazing player to watch. Besides the acoustic guitar on her own tracks, Happy did not have terribly much to play (keyboard) for this outfit, but she sang lead or backup on practically every tune - exquisitely, of course. On her own tunes Bon and Hanny provided great atmosphere. I especially liked their treatment of Ra, possibly the 5th distinct arrangement I think I've heard of it. And of course Happy provided her usual light banter... "I don't see anyone dancing!" Later, Bon says: "Next is a Happy tune" Happy: "Well, not necessarily a *happy* tune, but one of mine." The audience for this was about 40 strong. About a third were obviously there to see Happy, there was a small contingent who were there to see Lo (they've played there before), and then some who just found something to do on a Saturday night in Albany. Or perhaps live around the block and always go there. After the show Happy could be found at the bar, chatting and signing stuff. We talked to her briefly. Charming as always. A splendid evening. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 12:05:47 -0500 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: Emily Bezar: Nth Impressions Allow me to jump in and concur with all these reviews. I first heard Emily on WPKN about 4 years ago. As the internet was not what it is now, and her CDs hard to find, I managed to acquire a tape of GTL. I liked it, but it didn't get much play, simply because it wasn't in the CD format that's so popular with the kids these days (ok, excuse the old Letterman line...) Discussions here on the new album rekindled my interest so I went to the webite and ordered the lot. She is definitely a complex and fascinating artist worth the investment in listening time. Comparisons to others are of course inaccurate but inevitable, so here's my take. There are moments she reminds me of Kate, and then others of Happy's ethereal side. Veda Hille at times too - including piano treatments. Some arrangements remind me of the old progressive band called The Enid - yes, I know I'm dropping references now that would make Dennis Miller scratch his head. But I will say, redundantly, if you know what I'm talking about (re: Enid), then you know what I'm talking about (re: Emily). I think. At the risk of making this "review" even more bizarre, I'd postulate an inverse conceptual direction to Jane Siberrry. Jane's early material was on the pop side, and evolved into a very jazz influenced sound. Emily's early material has a distinct jazz influence, evolving to a more accessible sound on Four Walls. Not saying they sound similar, even inversely, just interesting inverse musical directions. On a meta level... sort of. Sense making not, suppose I. I go lurk now... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 12:20:37 -0500 (EST) From: jburka@min.net Subject: Re: Project Lo Albany foghorn sez: > The band was a trio in Albany, just Bon, Hanny and Happy. That'd be Bowie's "Station to Station" which was performed on the last Lo tour in which Happy (and Caryn Lin) participated. Fabulous. I'm still annoyed at not getting to see the MD show, particularly given the low attendance. jeff n.p. _Four Walls Bending_, Emily Bezar ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 12:26:24 EST From: Maeve421@aol.com Subject: Re: question/ Trustworthy? Owing to work pressures, I had to miss Sarah Slean's show at CB's Gallery on Wednesday night, but was fortunate to make the concert at Dan and Leif's Thursday (thanks again!). That show was all meth said it was. I was sitting close enough to Sarah and her keyboard that I could have been stomped on by her active left foot (which she said has a mind of its own) if she'd let it wander a bit more. This is the second time I've seen Sarah play, and was again struck by how young she comes off when she's not singing. She's very playful, switching into a cockney-ish accent or telling everyone about the many uses of the expression "waanh"--it makes her seem very different from what you'd imagine if you just heard the music. Friday night I caught a late bus to Philadelphia for the late show at the Tin Angel. I have to say that the establishment has been good to me the past two times I've been there; having reservations at Serrano's did indeed get me reserved seating up in front both times. The menu is on the pricey side, but I did enjoy the Guiness pork, which I consumed with the obligatory pint of Guiness. On going up to the Tin Angel and getting a pint of Yard's Brawler (a delicious stouty brew), I overheard one of the women working the bar tell the other, "That guy is *so* cool" "Who?" "The guy with the big hair." The guy turned out to be Geno White, the Lolo Records artist who opened for Project Lo. He's from Cape May, NJ, and everything he played related to the sea: "Flying Fish," "Harpoon" (dedicated to whalers and whales past) and "Hook Her" (a tribute to John Lee Hooker). The music was somewhat interesting acoustic guitar work with no vocals. And the hair was big: a long mane of frizzy brown hair gathered back in a loose ponytail. I wasn't overwhelmed by his coolness, but the set was OK. The set list for Project Lo was: Your Mind Mercy Street Ra Is A Busy God Ali (Hansford Rowe) Perfection Feed the Fire Image (Hansford Rowe) Rajah (with effects and some background chanting by Happy) One World (Hansford Rowe, with backing vocals by Happy) Chariot first line of "My Bonny Lies Over the Ocean" (Happy, who else?) Collective Heart encore: Station to Station It was nice to hear "Collective Heart" again; the acoustic version was a lot like the one off *The Keep.* The stuff by Hansford Rowe didn't get me all that excited--part of it was that I'd never heard it before, but I didn't care for his vocal style too much. He only used the bass with the interesting fretwork a couple of times and I'm not good enough to tell just what it added. (You can see a picture of him holding it at .) There were some interesting additions to "Rajah"--Happy's chant replaced some high string sounds from the album, and in the passage toward the end where Bon periodically hits a low chord on the guitar, it was accented by the bass, a sharp hit to the drums, and Happy grunting "unh." It worked well. Happy was wearing her "Cat in the Hat" top again, this time with a mid-length black skirt and a black jacket. She looked very fetching and seemed to be having a good time. The audience for the late show was only about 30 people, but was very vocal in its appreciation. (Apparently the crowd at the earlier show was pretty subdued.) It was worth getting back at 4am for. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 10:35:25 -0800 (PST) From: John Drummond Subject: Re: Emily, Kahimi and Moa > Does anybody know if Kahimi Karie is good and if so > which record I should start with? Did 4 tunes, all of maritime influence. Sounds the same as your show. Geno was also manning the CD/Poster table during and after Lo's set. This made it a little awkward for me, as I wanted to buy Hanny's new solo album and was willing to buy one other CD (cash only table, don't cha know). I enjoyed Geno's performance but not necessarily enough to want to run and buy his CDs. They had the 2 Lo CDs I already had, MWABT, Hanny's, Geno's 2 CDs, and a few other solo CDs, mostly Bon's. I was looking for more Lo, and eventually settled on a Bon CD that looked to have the core cast of Lo (Bon, Hanny, Caryn). Geno proudly informed me that he played on that CD. Oh, good, I said. Then I asked (sort of already knew this) whether all these LoLo label CDs are available thru Artist Shop on the 'net, and he said yep. Good, I can think about buying more later when I can wield plastic. (Memo to self: Or not). And regarding the clarification about Station (to Station), I wish they'd played that for Albany. Although the Albany crowd kind of lost momentum on the obligatory applause to bring the band back for the first encore. Applause just died out and scattered conversation could be heard. Eventually someone just started applauding nothing and the crowd joined in and and they came back for Collective Heart. Probably after that little audience slack display it was no wonder no 2nd encore ensued. Funny thing though, after the encore Happy took her guitar to the dressing room (they had to walk thru the audience as the stage was in "front" and the dressing room in "back") which she did not do after the main set ended. Then a couple minutes later she reappears with the guitar and people applaud as if, OK, another encore. And she says, No, no, I'm sorry, I don't know what I was thinking bringing this with me, it belongs up here with the rest of my stuff. Sorry, sorry, sorry... It was like a scene from a low budget independent artist version of This is Spinal Tap. So if I had to complain about the Albany show it was that it was short. But then again, it was a lousy $10 admission ($8 if bought in advance!). I got my money's worth. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 15:31:16 -0500 From: Mark Miazga Subject: Kendall Payne Has anyone heard much about her, or heard her new album? My friend, Rhan Wilson, excellent drummer and bass player created a strange, beautiful (and yes, funny) album last Christmas called An Altared Christmas. We did not have a lot of time to market it but those few folks I gave a copy to at Christmas loved it. I sang on two or three tracks and had a blast. Rhan had always had this ideas to take traditional songs, slow them down, trance them and do them in middle-eastern keys. We did a killer trancey version of Little Drummer Boy that swirls your mind, he sings with me and it is very beautiful and dreamy. As the album grew, and he added great singers and friends of his (notably Pipa Pinon, from Santa Cruz, who I have talked about her wonderful voice before and offered to try and get her album for ectofolks) She does a very pristine beautiful version of Silent Night, very very Ecto. Also on the 10 track album are some really fun songs, A visit from Saint Nicholas is great, with a deep voiced Santa reading the poem getting stranger and stranger, Deck the Halls sung by an exhausted new mother with a baby crying in the background as she intones "tis the season to be jolly", it is dry and funny/sad. Away in a manger is one I recorded, hard to describe, if a drunken Yugoslavian woman was trying to sing this traditionally while a So Cali Valley Girl heckled her. (both voices are mine, yes, I used to act). Plus a version of Jingle Bells you would never ever hear in your life, with almost all of the singers on it, it sounds like a party in a sleigh in Russia, going faster and faster and out of control. So, the album is a real mix of fun and beauty, I would recommend it. The web site was www.altered.com last year and if that doesn't work, Rhan's email in San Fran is RhanW@aol.com. Try this beautiful CD for a different treat for yourselves and others. Even the artwork is cool, it is Rhan's work also. Some of you may recall him as the drummer for the eclectic duo, THOTH. I just got a note from SK THOTH, he is doing well playing in the streets of NY, so watch out New Yorkers!
