Patrick Moseley did a fine job of describing the show and I'm filling in the gaps and a little commentary just for the heck of it. Patrick failed to mention that Happy was lead vocalist on many of the other tunes as well. Your Mind.....vocals mainly Happy....from PL's Black Canvas Mercy Street....vocals Happy....from PL's Black Canvas Ra is a Busy God.....Happy Ali.....vocals....Hansford Rowe...from Hanny's No Other Perfection....vocals Happy....from Black Canvas Feed the Fire.......Happy Rajah.......Instrumental....from Black Canvas No Other.....vocals Hansford Rowe...the title track from his album The Chariot.......Happy Hip Hipnosis....Instrumental....PL's Dabblings in Darkness D.I.E.....vocals Happy and Bon......Black Canvass Collective Heart.......Happy Station.....mostly Instrumental with Happy on vocals...I'm not sure of the title or origin The set list may vary slightly for subsequent shows. By my count, Happy sang on 9 of 13 tunes that's 70 percent. This was a superb concert that was poorly attended. I understand the Chicago concert turnout was very good. At the Wire, I didn't see the usual faces in the crowd that have become familiar to me from Tin Angel concerts. Until Patrick Mosely posted, I didn't know if any Happy fans turned out at all. The Chicago event almost wasn't...I'm very happy for the many fans in attendance that it did come off. Unfortunately, the Detroit show was canceled. Actually, it was never completely firmed up. For fans like Lynn Garret, who were looking forward to seeing Happy for the first time, and posted a ....what's up...there was disappointment The fact that the show was not firmly booked should have been communicated somehow along the way. People like Lynn looking forward and planning on something like this and then dealing with disappointment and confusion...that shouldn't happen. Getting back to the performance at The Wire, the group was a bit weary from travel and Happy's humor and banter was tempered. As always, she related well with the audience and complimented Bon's introductions and background commentary very well. The Wire, just outside of Harrisburg was such a cozy place with an owner committed to bringing great music to the area. Just an hour and twenty minutes from King of Prussia and you're there. The Philly contingent missed out on this one. Below are the remaining dates for Bon's Project Lo and the final dates of the millennium to see Happy live. Those in and around the areas of Philly, Wheaton MD, and Albany NY should get out and support the music. This was a wonderful collaboration of gifted artists and fine folks. Lastly, a quick note on other Happy tracks. Hansford Rowe's No Other has Happy one track. I mentioned earlier on this list that the song is in French and entitled Rouler. The French pronunciation is very different from the way it appears in print. I believe it to be the best cut on the album and not because Hap's backing vocal work. The album has another female vocalist doing backing vocals and she's excellent. Happy's voice just seems to always soar a little higher. The other Happy track for 1999 was from Samite's Stars to Share. Again, another female vocalist does backing vocals except for the title track which included Happy. Windam Records...spelling could be off...didn't give credit to Hap on their web page as some have pointed out. That hasn't changed and it shouldn't detract from the fact that this is a very nice recording which features an artist...Samite...who appears to have considerable character. He has played mostly to audiences in his war torn country giving them hope and a moment of escape from the horrors they've endured. I got that from the liner notes. Performed mainly in his native language, it conjures up thoughts of Lion cubs bounding around in tall blades of grass on the African plane. Very pleasant. Now you know why I've never posted a music review. I can't do justice to it like most Ectophiles do. I clearly know my limitations. Once again, Happy's voice soars and is simply on another level. What can ya say...the gal is gifted beyond most vocalists. My humble opinion anyway. Come out and support the Artists. This was truly a great show featuring the Elegant One herself and great guitar work by Bon and bassist Hansford Rowe. The drummer, by the way, was Paul Ramsay from Grey Eyed Glances. Forgive any misspells. This is very likely my final posting to this site. For varied reasons...it's turned out that way. I've never posted to anything public in my life before, so this has been basically it....this and a few postings over the past few years. The folks I've made contact with through this site have been truly amazing...in knowledge and just being great folks. The music and reviews and whatnot have opened up a universe of new artists. The artists I've discovered from the posts will have an enduring effect on my musical preferences. Thanks for the memories and the infulences. Final thought....Support the Artists. Your presence in the audience is a tangible vote and thank you all in one. 18 D.C. Last night's Iva Bittova performance at Lisner Auditorium in Washington DC was certainly one of the oddest and most intriguing concerts i've seen recently. The evening, in celebration of the "Velvet Revolution" that ten years ago created the Czech and Slovak republics, was introduced with remarks from ambassadors Vondra and Butora of those countries -- it was remarkable to hear words like "ten years ago, I had just been released from prison" from these staid-looking gentlemen. The Skampa quartet opened with a performance of Leos Janacek's first string quartet. i wasn't familiar with Janacek's composition previously, so i was simultaneously evaluating the composition as well as the quality of the performance, and i lack the vocabulary to do this sort of thing properly, anyway. But i was stunned and delighted -- it seemed to me that they played with great passion and control, and i found the piece thrilling. It seemed to me to draw on both the classical and the romantic traditions -- themes were picked up and passed between the instruments in a way that reminded me of classical composers like Haydn, and there were langorous phrases that reminded me of the romantics. There was plenty of post-romantic noise and dissonance, though -- usually in short, controlled bursts. There was some particularly frenetic bowing in the second movement which produced sounds unlike any i'd heard before. Next, pianist/keyboardist Marian Varga was joined by Iva Bittova for a brief improvisation. Bittova showed off her substantial range. She sang graceful melodies that put me briefly in mind of Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk, punctuated with fast runs of tiny stacatto syllables. She sang briefly into the microphone, but soon abandoned it. When she left the stage, she did so continuing to sing, twirling off into the darkness of the wings -- a remarkable image. Due in part to the dim light, i misread the program, and listened to Marian Varga's trio of pieces under the misapprehension that they were all improvisational. They did little to correct this misapprehension. They certainly contained moments of melodic and other interest -- in particular, he fell into a sort of mutant boogie woogie for a bit, and a memorable segment featured chords pounded at the absolute opposite ends of the keyboard -- but i detected little overall structure. The impression i had was of an undeniably talented performer more-or-less goofing off. This impression was perhaps heightened by his use of two electronic keyboards, in addition to the grand piano. When he suddenly started playing a ghostly choir, it struck me as gimmicky. (Even in a rock'n'roll band, abrupt mid-song transitions between keyboard sounds strike me as gimmicky, for whatever it's worth.) i'm not quite sure why this should be so -- it doesn't seem gimmicky when a composer uses different voices within an orchestra, for example, structuring a call-and-response between the brass and the woodwinds. The sounds that synthesizers produced that real human beings and "real" instruments don't also often strike me the same way. The conclusion of Varga's performance was quite shocking. i had begun to think that the lighting folks were trying to send increasingly less subtle signals to Varga to wrap it up -- the lights had slowly been coming up and down for a while, and finally, spots began to flash on and off in a really unmistakable fashion. Varga played on, oblivous -- although three compositions were listed in the program, he'd not paused once -- and Bittova ran onto the stage, draped an arm around his shoulder, crooning a laughing "na na na na na na na" figure. i was shocked again by how many people did not return for the second half of the program. True, i'd not found Varga at all to my taste, but neither had i found him dull. Bittova's solo performance was astounding, and far more to my taste. i was going to say she accompanied herself on violin, but that's misleading. Her pieces were demanding both vocally and instrumentally, and often simultaneously. She prowled the length and depth of the stage restlessly, frequently spinning around. The first piece, "Huljet huljet, kinderlech" had an almost conversational aspect, with one theme repeatedly interrupting another; it was very playful. The second, "Ne Nehledej (Stop Searching)" was more sombre; it reminded me somewhat of Dead Can Dance, and ended with a startling run doubled by Bittova's voice and violin. The third, "Ej lasko, lasko" was the only time i've ever seen a kazoo played at a classical concert. It was sort of Gerschwin-y, though with a Slavic sort of aspect, and punctuated by most un-Gerschwin-like shrieks. i didn't take notes on the fourth, probably because i was too swept up in it. After the solo interlude, Bittova brought Skampa Quartet back to perform "Quatour pour Cora," a four-movement work for string quartet and voice. i thought it was the most remarkable performance of a remarkable evening. i expected the arrangment to highlight the vocalist at the expense of complexity and richness in the string parts; not at all so. This was a genuine quintet arrangement in which one of the instruments happened to be a voice. One of the movements started with an intricate clapping pattern and used the voices of the quartet as a sort of percussion. Another featured otherwordly, buzzing glissandos on the violin. Bittova and Skampa returned for a brief encore, walking on stage while playing their instruments, a showy move i'd not seen a string quartet pull of before (the cellist did take his seat when he reached it). This final piece of the evening had a very classical feel to it; a spritely melody and conventional tonality making an uplifting end to the evening. - -- d. - - oh no, you've just read mail from doug = dmw@radix.net - get yr pathos - - www.pathetic-caverns.com -- books, flicks, tunes, etc. = reviews - - www.fecklessbeast.com -- angst, guilt, fear, betrayal! = guitar pop ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 16:05:05 -0500 (EST) From: Chris Snyder Subject: Sarah Slean Boston House Concert Hello everyone I hope your day is going well. I am pleased to invite you to a special concert taking place on November 20th. This show is special because of the artists and the enviroment in which it is presented. On November 20th at 3pm we are pleased to present an afternoon show with Canadian songstress Sarah Slean. This will be Sarah's first ever appearence in Boston. This concert is part of a homegrown series called Longfellow St. Concerts. Longfellow St. Concerts is a series of shows held in our home. Our goal is to present some of the best acoustic musicians in the business, in an intimate, comfortable enviroment. This type of show has long been the standard through the middle of the country where folk clubs are few and far between. For years artists like Greg Brown, Christine Lavin, and others have opted to play shows in peoples homes rather than risk playing a show in a local bar. Because we live in one of the richest music enviroments in the country we have been not been given the privelege of seeing artists in such a small, intimate setting. Because we saw how special some of these shows are, we decided to bring this unique experience of live music to the city. Our concerts have an attendace limit of 30 people making each show a special experience for audience and artist alike. It is very hard to describe how special these shows are. The only way to know what they are like is for you to come one. Once you have seen the joy in the artists faces you will never want to miss a show. "Sarah gives you a window into a soul that is both fragile and resilient. Above all, there is always a sense of hope" - Chart Magazine "I describe her as Tori Amos with all the emotion and power but none of the over-the-top-ness. The best news is that she's just as musically inventive...she's doing her own thing." - Online review "Her shows tend to be characterized by a lot of storytelling and a remarkable amount of self-disclosure. Sarah has gotten to the point where she has so many terrific songs that it is impossible for her to play all of them at any given show." The secret of this artist's appeal is her charisma on stage. Whether Sarah is telling the story of lost love, new love, evil gas companies, being shunned by her favourite rock star or taking a joy ride with JD Salinger, Sarah succeeds at allowing audiences to take a small peek into her life. She reaches out to listeners in a way that makes each and every person in the room believe they are sitting in a small cafe with her swapping tales of joy and/or woe over a steamy, whipped cream topped bowl of hot chocolate. Audiences clear across Canada have been hearing her name roll off the lips of Our Lady Peace frontman, Raine Maida, right before he launches into her piano-based, heart wrenching take on his own "Julia". Her song "I Know" appears on Women & Songs 2 alongside female artists such as Tracy Chapman, Chantal Kreviazuk, Jewel, Natalie Merchant, Paula Cole, Billie Myers, Bonnie Raitt and Sarah McLachlan. Sarah has opened for the likes of Guster, Collective Soul, Susan Werner, Oh Susanna, and The Cowboy Junkies. She is currently opening a few shows for another great canadian act, Moxy Fruvous. So if this artist, and the upcoming concert sounds of intrest here are the details once again. Please remember to make reservations ASAP as these show do fill up. Start Time: November 20th, 3pm Location: 39 Longfellow St. Boston, MA Performers: Sarah Slean Admission: 10 dollars To make reservations, and for directions: e-mail gegertha@tiac.net or call 617-288-4381 If you have any other questions about the show please feel free to e-mail me. This should be a great show, and a nice preview to her opening for Mxy Fruvous the next night at The Somerville Theater. I hope all is well with everyone reading this. Written too late to be included on _Blue Parade_, it's a sure thing for her Atlantic debut (still probably at least a year off). Which reminds me, getting there early might be a good idea, I'll bet there'll be a lot of label types around. Oh, and philes from Philly and Boston are encouraged to go see Sarah open for Moxy Fruvous on Fri 19th and Sun 21st, respectively. Steve Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 17:32:19 -0600 From: "Mike Mendelson" Subject: project lo / happy in chicago I was thrilled to see Happy with project Lo in chicago last week. Martyrs was a nice intimate venue and they actually filled all the seats quite well -- obviously some happy fans out there that are not on ecto (yay!). Not quite sure, but it seemed like many of those present were there because of happy and not project lo. Regardless, the entire outfit was entertaining, and since the show, I have re-listened to black canvas and actually have a deeper appreciation for the rest of the album -- somehow seeing it live pushed me over to where these songs are now sounding quite good to me. It was nice to see some chicago ectofolk who I had not seen in quite a while. It's always interesting to me how people in the midwest tend to distinguish themselves from those on the coasts. This seems to still be true of the small faction of ecto people in chicago. They are clearly distinct in thought and voice from the coastal groups. Throughout the show I hooped and hollered any time happy played anything and she seemed to enjoy that -- I believe in being vocal at concerts and I've been waiting a *long* time to cheer her on. As I had always imagined, the most startling thing about watching her perform is seeing her traverse the 4-octave range that is her trademark with complete ease. She really is a doppleganger and it is hard to believe even when you see it that this is just one single person hitting all those notes! Although I saw her for the first time at ectofest, this was the first time I actually introduced myself to Happy (she was just too mobbed at ectofest and I hate fighting for a turn to just say hi). She definitely knew who I was (by name) which was very nice. Lots of people were having her sign CD jackets, to which I said "I've already got signed copies of those at home!." nyeh nyeh! Alberto was nice enough to take my picture with Happy and said he would send me a copy. Thanks, Alberto! Anyways, it was a lovely evening and I look forward to her fulfilling her promise that she will return to chicago soon. I agree with mitch that this event really went without much fanfare but I urge you all to take this moment to reflect on the profound achievement of Happy appearing for the first time in the Windy Apple. Vote here: http://www.aquezada.com/jess/tapevote.shtml Thanks. :) WEBSITE/JOURNAL We've made a couple of changes to the website. If you haven't seen the picture gallery yet, that is up and working... I have more pics from the Toronto/Detroit shows that I'll add soon. I also have an online journal now... The journals subjects fall somewhere between what is happening musically and otherwise in my life without being overly personal... I've thought about posting some essays I wrote in college too, just for fun, but we'll see... There are 5 entries up now here: http://www.aquezada.com/jess/journals.shtml C'EST WHAT? As some of you now I had the opportunity to do a huge show this summer with two of my muses, Emm Gryner and Tara MacLean, as well as indie singer-songwriters Tricia Concepcion and Michelle Turingan. Thanks to Edward I have a soundboard copy of my set and I'd like to offer it to anyone interested. I have two people will to make copies if you send them a 60-minute tape and $1 for postage. Please email them for details. There is an extra surprise on the tape too. :) Richard: blu_at_heart@hotmail.com, Mark: markurban1@hotmail.com Thanks you guys. :) CD SALES Just wanted to say thanks to those of you who have ordered TRANSITION and recomended it to others. I have now sold out of more than 1/2 of my run and after promotional CDs are sent out will have few left. If you haven't ordered one yet, check the website for details. Also, Earbuzz.com, a great place to buy CDs online offers Transition for a great price and they have it on sale pretty often... www.earbuzz.com/jessicaweiser Y2K SHOWS Unfortunately I won't be doing any live shows (as of right now) until after the new year begins to concentrate my energy on the new CD. However I am planning shows for Toronto, New York, LA (crossing fingers...) and Boston in early 2000 that will blow you away--a combination of art, music, and more... More details soon. I'll also be doing a radio show in Boston early in the year, and possibly a few college shows. NEW RECORDING I will begin recording the next CD in mid-December--later than I had expected--and plan to work on it for the next few months. It will include mostly new material but a few old songs as well... I'm experimenting with things like wurlitzers, leslies, organs, drums, strings and horns, and more... I really hope to have it out by at the latest May... hopefully April, though! I haven't decided on a studio/co-producer yet but hopefully it will all fall in to place... Thanks for reading and watch your mailbox (if I don't have your mailing address, please send it asap) Next time: Transition review in Nuvo newsweekly, big changes in my life and a possible address change, and more :) See you soon... Hey, we like to know what's up, too! >New Ani tomorrow, woohoo! :) Hey, I got it last week (it's good). Did anyone here the NPR All Things Considered segment on Heather Duby? We're on the left coast, so I didn't hear it in time to warn anyone to listen in. We have the album now, and I like it a lot though I'm just getting to know it and the new ani and the new Fiona all at once It's interesting, there are places where Heather Duby reminds me of all kinds of ecto artists. One the fifth song she sounds really like Jane Siberry to me, at time she sound rather like Sarah, and there's a strong similarity to Pamela Golden (Steve Fisk is all over both albums, so that probably explains part of that) though updated.
