Already on my wish list are Marianne Faithfull's new one, Pooka's second album, Dynamite and People Are Strange by Stina, Briana Corigan's album and a couple Maura O'Connell albums not available in the US. I'm also considering the Poison Girls box set and the 1st Sinead Lohan. I'd also appreciate any advice about used CD shops, particularly in Covent Garden. Thanks in advance, jay Oh you should definetly get Anja Gabarek's Balloon Mood as is out in the uk. Likewise Sandy Dillon's Electric Chair. She sounds like Tom Waits crossed with PJ Harvey and is very cool.Ben Christophers My Beautiful Demon is also very nice a cross between David Sylvian and Jeff Buckley. If you wouln't mind picking up a copy of the Anja album for me I could find you some swedish ectophilia in return.Hope that's okay.Have a good trip. Early December you say? Hmmm, both Velvet Belly and Lene Marlin might be out there by then (the albums I mean). At least Lene Marlin as one single is already out there. With VB I'm not that sure, but I could possibly hook you up with someone who can help you there. I'll get back to you when I know something more. The Anja album you should definitely get as it is amazing (Balloon Moon is the correct title btw). I'll try to think up something else you might find there that is not available across the Atlantic. *hugs* - -- Yngve n.p Lots of stuff I did download from Internet this week - among them IndieGrrl mp3's, Soma (wonderful music), Silverman and lots of other artists. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 10:27:47 -0500 From: "Craig Gidney" Subject: Cyber-waifs--2 CD reviews - --0__=Rn8BV19kPeZHeXI0GAULwTTswbCWL3RAH43DgBbMfJvnZmTDCEKgmG9i Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Heather Duby, _Post to Wire._ Duby is a young singer-songwriter who hails from Seattle, and the grey, somber-yet-beautiful tone of her debut reflects that lush, rain-drenched city. I recently ordered the UK Gold Circle release of Happy's MWABT (for the sole purpose of aquiring the bonus track "How it Should Be") and thought I'd post my reactions to the newsgroup. Please excuse me if I repeat any previously posted information. First of all, the packaging is slightly different. Of course there is the Gold Circle logo on the back of the packaging and on the CD itself, and the absence of the Samson logo and information. The clear CD tray has been replaced by a solid black one. And the holes in the front and rear covers of the CD sleeve have been replaced by solid covers with reproductions of what shows through the holes in the US release. I don't know if my copy is an anomaly -- but the cover image is slightly off-center (you see more of Happy's right arm than her left, and the CD title is closer to the edge on the right), but this isn't an obvious flaw. I was half expecting "How it Should Be" to be incorporated as a hidden track onto the album without mention of it on the packaging, but I was wrong; the title appears on the rear cover with all the others, and in the liner notes, the production and other such credits are moved to the back page so that the lyrics to "How it Should Be" can appear immediately after "Serenading Genius." On a slightly nit-picky note, the lyrics to "How it Should Be" are transcribed without the use of alternating fonts to reflect different parts of the song -- an idea used effectively on the other tracks. As for the song itself, it's quite good. It's catchy and rhythmic and probably the most "pop" track on the album -- even moreso than "Roy." Musically (and arrangement-wise) it's not far removed from the techno pop of Madonna's "Ray of Light," and Happy gives a fine vocal performance even if the melodic polish of the song doesn't allow for a showcase of much of her range. I'm not sure, however, if I'll ever truly feel it's an MWABT track. Not only am I used to MWABT being comprised of only 11 songs, but I also feel MWABT was quite complete and stellar as it was. And on top of that, while musically "How it Should Be" fits the same electronic, layered soundscape as the rest of MWABT, lyrically it's something different. To my ears, it's born from the same "I'll do my own thing" mindset that spawned such songs as "Play the Game" and "I Say" in the past... Not that that's a bad thing at all, but the rest of MWABT (with *maybe* the exception of "Proof") lyrically create whole new worlds whereas "How it Should Be" seems to skim over the top. Not to mention the fact that continuity-wise, it comes at the wrong point in the album. As used to the original version of MWABT as I am, I can't suggest a better spot for the song, but "Serenading Genius" is more fit as an album closer. But take these criticisms very lightly, because like I said, "How it Should Be" is quite good, and a must-have for every true Happy fan. I'll probably end up regarding it like I do "Look for the Child" or "Be Careful What You Say" -- good on their own merits, but somehow removed from the other songs on the same album. For those interested, I believe my total came to somewhere around $23 having MWABT imported from the UK branch of amazon.com into the States. It was on back-order when I ordered it; once I received notification that it had been shipped, it arrived two days later. Live in Boston..... I'm a long-time Kate Bush fan.... And also a big fan of Rose Polenzani, Erin McKeown, Jess Klein, Kris Delmhorst, The Nields, Lori McKenna... I think from the discussion here that you guys would appreciate my friend's band. I dont know if anyone here is from Denver/Boulder, but here's the scoop: My friend Jenna has a band in Denver called Sarina Simoom (after her guardian angel). She started the band about 5 years ago in the DC area, where it was very successful in the alternative scene there, played a lot of the big clubs. But she got fed up with that scene, moved to Colorado in fall 97, and got a new band. The sound is much changed.... The new Sarina Simoom has improved tons in the last year or so (and they were great before, but now they are phenomenal, really tight). They gained a member and are now Jenna on acoustic and electic guitar, violin, and vocals, Todd on drums, Tim on bass and back-up vocals, and Brian on various guitars. Jenna's ethereal voice and style has often been compared to Kate Bush. But really its quite unique, full of emotion. She does all the writing. Its really not folk, but if you heard her alone with her acoustic guitar you could be fooled. Its sort of alt-rock with some jazz and latin influences here and there. And great drums. And beautiful violin. Anyway, I suck at describing these things, so just trust me and go if you are anywhere nearby. As a reference, Sarina Simoom played a show with Erin McKeown this past August and she loved them. Wants them to come east and play with her. A show that is. If you can't afford $5, go to www.femmusic.com and you can probably get free tickets. Or go there anyway cuz its a cool website about female musicians of all sorts. So here's the info. Let me know what you think if you go! They dont have a website or recordings yet (soon!!), so if you want to know anything more, ask me. They are beautifully packaged, and she wrote a brief note in each CD. I've decided to listen to them in chronological order. I listened to Tea Leaves once and decided to listen again before moving on to Grenadine. I don't think I've had quite this reaction to an album since 'Little Earthquakes' almost 8 years ago. Not that Tea Leaves sounds anything like Earthquakes. But, I approached both with high expectations, enjoyed but was mildly disappointed on the first listen. Then on listen #2, I was/am being blown away. Emily refers to Tea Leaves as a "strong brew," and it is a very risky album (operatic vocals, electronic noises, piano, drama and mythology). Heady brew would be a more apt description. Sonically, it's a bit like Mary Lydia Ryan's first album but much more adventurous. If the other two albums have the same effect (or affect), you can sign me up for the Cult of Emily. jay P.S. I think it's so cool that EB borrowed equipment from Amy X. She just as sheepishly admitted to wanting to autograph each one, but was worried if that was presumptuous. Listening in chronological order is best, IMO... But be forewarned that they are each different, with MiG and FWB being *somewhat* similar in that they are less "sonically" oriented and more concerned with "the song". They are, of course, all similar in that they are undisputably :) wonderful, albeit in different ways. I took two listens to be blown away, as well. I emailed Emily in 1994 asking for a station copy for WHUS. She replied, sent one and waited for my impression. At this point I was worried that I'd gotten into a situation where I was going to be faced with either lying or having to tell an artist (make that Artist) that her work was not to my liking. Fortunately, I was so thoroughly won over, that giving my complete and truthful opinions without discomfort. Shortly after that, Emily came east to NYC and invited Kathy (my SO) and I to visit her in Brooklyn and to go find some Indian food. We won't forget that trip... Neither the one in February a couple of years ago, when, in NYC, again, she gave a small, intimate concert for her east coast fans/friends in a recording studio in Chelsea (followed, again, by Indian food). When MiG came out, I had to readjust my ears (expecting the same experimentation and drama). When I made the jump, I landed in a lovely place, again. More song-oriented, but just as beautiful and deep. Regarding the borrowed Amy X equipment... I've not heard the full story, but Emily did once describe the album and being like a miracle baby. FWB forced yet another jump. And I am once again surrounded by beauty. She's easily one of my favorite artists. As for the inevitable? Tori comparisons (not that Jay made one, mind you) I've found myself comparing her more (in my own mind) to David Sylvian (particularly Damage and Gone To Earth)... Go figure. In any event... Please... Enjoy those CDs. They're all wonderful in their own way. The disc ranges from rock to alterna to world beat to big band to the whole nyc jazz-klezmer-fusion thingy. The new collection (which I'm not sure I like as much as the first) has Wayne Horvitz and Robin Holcomb performing "mah l'khah ha-yam." It's...dreamy, for lack of a better way to put it. Other ecto-connections would include TMBG singing "Feast of Lights" (a cute, typically john 'n john ditty about dysfunction during the holiday season), Neshama Carlebach singing Peter Himmelman's "A Love Transcending," and I might even count, under the ecto genre, "La Mujer de Terah" by Continuo and "Winter Light" by Irina Mikhailova & Ira Stein.
