Am suffering from EWS..But before that occured I found a treasure in Jill Tracy's fabulous album Diabolical Streak. Fans of Rasputina and Kristeen Young will like this album. Its theatrical, delightfully strange and lovely. She plays the piano and sings in a seductive whisper. At times the songs remind me of Kate's Coffee Homeground and Hammer Horror. You can get it from www.jilltracy.com or amazon.com. Oh and I loved Wendy Rule's website too..and her songs.. Anna Maria nr-Margaret Atwood-Good bones ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? In my view, they're much more interesting than Garmarna; their use of electronics and digitally-altered jaw harps and didgeridoos, combined with their throat singing make it right up my alley. For you nordic music heads, you may want to know about a Hedningarna side project called Musta, featuring one of the singers from Hedningarna, and it is every bit as good as anything that I've heard by the full band. Some of the songs are kinda dancey, and the sound engineering is masterful. Sanna has one of the most adorable voices I've heard lately. Also on north side records, so you can find it for cheap. For some reason our local used CD stores are being glutted with northside record cut-outs. I've been lucky to find most of my nordic stuff for under $8. You may want to check it out. cheerio --alan PS: Momus is touring! check out www.demon.co.uk/momus for more info PPS: Stay tuned for 2 reviews, one of Eleven Shadows Sangsara and one of Infrared, My Scarlet Life's new album. - -- Alan Ezust Cambridge, MA USA http://www.brainwashed.com/ezust ezust@brainwashed.com - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is Music. -- Aldous Huxley ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Nov 1999 16:17:59 -0500 (EST) From: Jay Behel Subject: Brigid Boden I was just reading the Brigid Boden entry on the Guide and remebered that 4 or 5 years ago, I saw an item about her doing a show in Dublin that was all Kate Bush covers. The corresponding LP was 'Thirty Thousand Feet Over China'. The Harmony Ridge website has a sample from 'Made On Earth' with Hector Zazou. I've seen a review of this which describes it as 'Portishead for grown-ups". Probably worth investigating. james cunnane n.p. Y'all, So I was intrigued enough by anna maria's description of Jill Tracy to go check out her website... oh MY LORD... I absolutely adored the soundclips, this music seems exactly up my alley... so, in Grande And Extreme John Drummond Fashion, I sent her a long retarded email detailing my excitment at having discovered her and already have dropped money into the mail for both of her CDs... I'm a big loser, I know... but wow. I'll give a full review or whatever once they both arrive... *licking lips* Today, I had two delcious treats waiting in my mailbox: Emily's _Four Walls Bending_ and Mediaeval Baebes' _Worldes Blysse_! I'm on the last track of 4WB, and y'all are right, it definitely is her best and most accessible work... but I'm going to have to give it a few more listens to really be able to discern the (I think significant) differences between it and _Moon in Grenadine_... I still haven't gotten _Grandmother's Tea Leaves_, since I slack. But anyhow... my first impressions are extremely strong, it's everything I liked about MiG and even more awesome stuff... the little electronic flourishes are just perfect... if she hadn't done such a lush job of creating the whole sound of the album, the electronics would be so totally out of place... but the whole thing sounds just like... like Godiva chocolate... mmmmmmm... but anyhow, again, a more thorough review and commentary will ensue once I've given it a few more good hard listens with the lyric sheet... as of now, I haven't even really looked at the lyrics yet... but I'm excited. And yeah, the graphic design *was* done beautifully... but anyhow... I am going to put in _Worldes Blysse_ in just a few minutes... and I'm SO THRILLED to finally have this, thank you to every one who informed me of its release in this country, thank you so much so much so much... those girls mean billions to me. You know... these three artists are making me realize how valuable Ecto is to me... I mean, I'd been listening to Emily before I found Ecto, and Mediaeval Baebes hadn't even come up before since I've been on here, but wow... y'all rule. This is the best community of music on the net. Like, period. ;D *happy community grins* (did y'all ever think I'd ever say anything like that? When Heavenly Voices came out with their first two compilations, I was in heaven. There were tons of bands I "discovered" directly as a result of this comp. Eleven Shadows, however, was not one of them, even though they have a very moving on Volume 2 called "56 in 81, sampling liberally from the Rodney King trial where a lawyer was describing what it was like to be beaten 56 times in 81 seconds. A very vivid and disturbing song, but since most of it was just a spoken word sample, I did not pursue their music further. But I came across this new release in the used bin and decided to check it out. The dark brooding synths, and the operatic female vocals did it for me. Sometimes the singer even sounds a bit like Bjork. She sings in Italian and Tibetan, and sometimes her voice takes on this Bjork-like quality to it which I find quite endearing. But if this wasn't enough, in the middle of the CD, I was pleasantly surprised to hear some instrumental ambient noise tracks. The shimmering bright bell sounds combined with heavily aliased and distorted sound samples created an atmosphere which reminded me quite a bit of the instrumental bits in Tear Garden's Tired Eyes Slowly Burning. What a combination! It's their third album, but their first on this very young record label out of ohio. Good luck finding it in stores though! You may want to check out the web site to hear song samples. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Nov 1999 21:27:18 EST From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: recommendations: Fisher & Curio Hey guys, Wanted to make 2 recommendations b/c I'm sort of bored with everything I hear lately... The second I don't know as well as the first, though, but still bears mentioning... The band Fisher is amazing... They are one of the most downloaded bands on the Internet and have a great debut CD "One" out... Vocals/lyrics are done by Kathy Fisher, who has a great, sexy, lush voice... she's also very funny and down-to-earth...:) Her partner in crime is Ron Wasserman, an excellent producer and multi-instrumentalist... Together they formed Fisher and I can't rave enough about the CD. You can check them out here: www.digitalsound.net, or www.mp3.com... It might be more "pop" than some people here can handle, but I really like what they're doing... (And try to guess which artist she wrote "The Life" about...hehe. hint, her new CD is out tomorrow) Also, a band I found online today, out of Boston: Curio. Interesting sound... I hate comparisons but this sounds like what would happen if Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan had a love child...her vocals do, anyway. The sound is sort of reminiscent of Portishead, though... www.curio-online.com :) Jessica www.aquezada.com/jess | www.mp3.com/jessweiser ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Nov 1999 10:08:20 -0600 From: "Mike Mendelson" Subject: oh my g-d Vickie wrote: >Subject: Happy "Spot Checked" in Chicago Reader!
