This reinforces my conviction that you *need* to hear _Spine_. It's everything _Path_ is not, in precisely the ways you pointed out above. The bridge of "26 Years" is an utterly scrumptious melody (and if you can get that far, to her _Here Is A Picture_ album, the melody of "Meeting The Group Of 7", which appears earlier on in the instrumental "Boat Ride To Skidegate" is, the most gorgeous melody I've ever heard). When I want to introduce someone to Veda's music who isn't used to being challenged so much, I loan them _Path_. It's certainly her most accessible album. I still love it, but it's not the difficult listening hour her new one, _You Do Not Live In This World Alone_ is by any stretch of the imagination. Oh. Well, I guess I won't get away with referring you to her other records then :) She is NOTHING like Celine Dion; on the other hand I don't see a lot of similarity with Kate Bush either. I tend to compare her to Margot Smith, since they seem to share this certain Diva quality... but this probably doesn't help you much either. To tackle your question directly: I'd rate her at 10 compared to Celine Dion, and around 6-7 compared to your very favourite Ecto Goddess; amazing compared to anything on commercial radio and somewhere between good and very good by Ecto standards. She has deep, clear, very powerful voice and writes lyrics that shy away from your typical "girl loves a boy" subjects. She is a Wiccan witch and her interests in ritual, myth and spirituality are a very clear inspiration for her songs. But I don't find this overbearing, despite not being Wiccan myself; just different, and that's fine by me. Musically, her songs are quite rich in textures and instrumentation, but on the more acoustic side - piano, cello, acoustic quitar... that sort of thing. And for those familiar with Kerri Simpson, she did some backing vocals for Wendy... that might be another good reference point. The website at www.wendyrule.com has a few clips, both mp3 and realaudio. Even if you can't play the music it'll give you some idea of where she comes from. - ------------------------------------------------------ "Macintosh for Productivity, Linux for Development, Palm for Mobility, and Windows for Solitaire." - - spotted on a t-shirt @ macsurfshop.com - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Nov 1999 23:24:36 -0500 (EST) From: tefinn@altavista.net Subject: Re: Miranda Sex Garden ---- you wrote: > Yves. "the voice of indie-pop" i would think someone like SCOTT ZIMMERMAN would be a better person for that one. i just play an indie kid on TV, i am not really all that knowledgable.... but i do what i can. and not to worry. you all won't be rid of me all that soon....(i can hear the collective sounds of ectophiles yelling "damn" wringing in my virtual ears) neal wrote: > My guess is that these could be risk free > purchases, as I'm sure you can > get rid of either of those discs here at cost. > Path of the Body has still > never been released in the US (I think), so I'm > sure you could trade or > sell it here with no trouble at all. no it isn't really the money. i realize that anything i pick up that i don't like, that has been recommended by ECTOPHILES, i probably recycle by selling it off at cost. it just that there is so much good music out there, i have a hard time buying stuff and listening to, after i already gave it a chance. like all suggestions, i am usually happy with most of my acquisitions. but some don't pan out. VEDA didn't. neither did IMOGEN HEAP. nor THE NIELDS all that much (METH and VALERIE forced me to buy GOTTA GET OVER GRETA in chicago years ago, telling me that they would refund my money if i didn't like it. and as much as i found novelty fun in that particular album, i rarely listen, and i have not really liked anything by them before or after that CD).but i don't have any regrets about buying any of them (well maybe the JEWEL cd, but her promos and the self produced tape she put out are great!). and i keep them because perhaps one day i will listen to them again. and if not, i view them as a souvenirs and spoils of my being on ECTO...and of course, i could always sell them off at any point...(well except for that JEWEL CD, PIECES OF YOU, which i swore i saw a couple of homeless people trying to sell it on the streets in the CASTRO a couple of weeks ago...). (hits include LABOUR OF LOVE, ACCIDENTLY KELLY STREET and their cover of BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE here in the states) or someone like JILL SOBULE who hit big with I KISSED A GIRL, both achieved fleeting success with songs that were major hits seemingly full of novelty and cuteness. both offered much more though, and unfortunately have yet to achieve success with later releases (FRENTE! broke up and ANGIE HART is in another band in LA , i forget what) and JILL was dropped by ATLANTIC, but is producing stuff on her own, and info can be found on www.jillsobule.com, including some great mp3's. unfortunately it hasn't been updated in awhile.
