I was so lucky to find it this weekend when I was in Oslo. What I love the most about that version is the mix between the old and new without destroying the feel of the song itself just adding an extra dimension to it. Vickie managed to make me wanna get out there and get all those artists, and in that process I discovered how hard it really is. I'm still hoping I'll be able to get them all one day though. I'm so glad I got all this great music, but my wallet isn't :) Liqourice - Listening Cap A very interesting and varied album. I've actually seen it in the store quite some times taken it for another of those 4AD collections, but I did realize my own mistake after the discussions here on ecto. Another thing to thank this mailinglist for. Lene Marlin - Playing My Game I've wanted to buy this album for quite some time now, but heavy EWS has prevented me from doing just that. What is it about the town Tromsoe that makes it such a wonderful place for coughing up great artists. Bel Canto is from there, and now Lene Marlin. She came out of nothing last year, and did take Norway with storm (now she is doing this in tough countries like France as well). Seems like she is doing the same as Jewel, but the other way around - she has yet to completly finish a live-concept. She got quite a flying start by getting a song on a soundtrack for the norwegian film "Schpaaa", and with a wonderful video too. Some people will say that the album is a bit flat, but I wouldn't expect that very much from someone not 20 years old yet. There are some very good songs, and the rest of them are far from bad. All in all a much better debut than Jewel's Pieces of You album, and that album didn't even have a song like "Unbelievable Sinner" on it. Rose Chronicles - Shiver I love this album this far (only listened to it once), but I have to wait a bit for it to settle to comment further. Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin - Selected Tracks Another one of those I got from Femme Music Collection. I haven't listened to it much, but what I've heard is really pleasant. Not sure if I got the song I wanted on this collection cause I haven't got through it completly. Tiny Lights - Hazel's Wreath I really love this band, and I'm happy everytime I find something "new" by them. This album is pretty old I guess as Jane Scarpetta still was in the band. I've only listened to it once, but love it this far. Katydids - Eponymous I've picked up albums by this band wondering what they were all about. I found this album very cheap, so I thought I should give them a try. Not bad on first listen, but that might change :) Tori Amos - To Venus and Back I love it!! Don't wanna say more at this point :) Zoe - Hammer What a wonderful album!! I regret that I haven't picked it up before. Enough on it for many hours of listening and discovering. Laurie Sargent - Heads & Tales I've only listened to it once, but I love it this far. Miranda Sex Garden - Gush Forth my Tears I have been looking for this the last 6 years or so, and now I finally found it even though it did cost me about $15. I wouldn't expect to find it very cheap, as it doesn't surface very often. I haven't listened to the following yet, so I can't say one thing or the other : Jill Sobule - Things are Different Here Pale Saint - WMTID (what kinda title is this? :) Cæcilie Norby - Queen of Bad Excuses (I did see her in concert and it was really breathtaking) Patti Rothberg - Between the 1 and the 9 That was a it I think :) *hugs* - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 12:32:28 +0100 (CET) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: Re: Miranda Sex Garden Oh, I just wanted to say that the last time I heard something about MSG was that they were dropped by Mute, so in any case a new label has to be found to release something new. - -- Yngve n.p. He also co-wrote some other songs with Jewel--most of which haven't been recorded-- including the hilarious Daddy She's A Goddess, Silver Lining, etc. He was also the driving force of The Rugburns. His sense of humor and his pop sensibilities are what remind me of Stephen Merrit--but his topics seem much more frat-boy rock oriented than Stephen's gender bending tragic love stories. (Though Steve has written a few gender benders of his own). I don't think you'd really like him Irvin, but he's great fun to see live if you have the chance. And Irvin, I enjoy all your posts--and certainly hope you don't ever unsubscribe from ecto. To me, you're the voice of indie-pop--and have exposed me to lots of bands I'd never heard of otherwise. One of these days I'll have to check out more of the Merritt projects. Neal C. has put several of his bands on various sampler tapes, and while I've liked most of the songs, I never really finding the albums. n.p. Jewel - Joy: A Holiday Collection Well, this album certainly won't win any over of the fans she's lost due to her overproduction and sunny optimism. Yet, I find myself really liking it--for schmaltzy over-produced music, at least it's very well done. Her voice is great, and a couple of the songs are really incredible. It struck me listening to this that Jewel is sort of the Karen Carpenter of the 90's, the naive innocent, kind of corny young woman with the great voice (minus the anorexia). This album reminds me of some of the Christmas type specials of the 70's-- very wholesome family oriented, variety of styles of music, etc. Like I said, it certainly won't win over any of her fans who left because she refuses to record her darker, angrier material (Nicotine Love, etc.), but it's not a bad album. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 10:10:21 -0500 (EST) From: Jay Behel Subject: Re: Miranda Sex Garden & Mediaeval Baebes Actually 'Worldes Blysse' by Mediaeval Baebes is available in the US (on Virgin/Nettwerk). Just as Forever Burning said goodbye to everyone last November, I'm sure that most of you have also said goodbye to Miranda Sex Garden in your thoughts. Well HELLO! WE'RE BACK!!! Let it be known that one of Europe's finest goth/ethereal bands Miranda Sex Garden will be releasing a brand new album!!! All seemed lost, but sometimes miracles happen and this time it's not a rumour, it's not a maybe, it's happening. The new album has no title so far. It will contain all new material as well as previously unrecorded songs. It will be the first release on new record label sugarDaddy, set up by Katharine Blake and Nigel Shaman. Nigel will also be producing the album. Recordings start on Friday 13th August (that's goth for you!) and are expected to go on for 10-14 days. The album is scheduled for release early next year. Initially it will be sold through the new official Miranda Sex Garden Web site, but we are hoping to also get a number of licensing deals for distribution around the world. The new official Web site will be the commercial site, while Forever Burning will be the fan site. Since the Mirandas are doing things for themselves this time, we are trying to make this a team effort. The Web team consists of Fiona Ferrer and Sean Qureshi who will be doing the commercial site and myself doing Forever Burning. Fiona, Sean and myself will be making sure that the two sites compliment each other and don't overlap too much. Both sites will be linked to each other and to the Mediaeval Baebes pages. The new album features a number of firsts: - - First album for 5 years, following Madra (1991), Iris (1992), Suspiria (1993) and Fairytales of Slavery (1994), all released by Mute Records (Elektra in the US) - - First album with the current line-up: Katharine, Ben, Trevor, Teresa, Barney and Mike - - First album where the band has complete artistic control - - First album to be mainly promoted and sold through the Internet As usual you can expect the band to do their own artwork too. New photos and soundclips from the album will be available within the next few months, so you'll have a chance to try before you buy! Forever Burning has moved to a new location. The new URL and the URL for the commercial site are at the end of this mail. There is also a new e-mail address for Forever Burning. Both sites currently only have a holding page, so not very much to look at yet. Forever Burning should slowly start coming back to life from next week, so keep checking. The commercial site is expected to follow in September. If you don't want to receive any more newsletters, please send a blank mail with the subject NO MORE MSG NEWS. I hope you're all still out there and into MSG, because the new album is going to be mindblowing, so have patience for a little while longer and all good will come to those who wait! I grant that the Tori b-sides combined with the albums are a substantial body of work. But Sarah certainly has a very modest catalog. Only 4 studio albums and not much in the b-side front (despite managing to come up with a whole b-side album). Personally, and i doubt it really matters, I thought Sarah's inclusion in the pantheon was premature since I did not think she had a suitable body of work for inclusion at the time, and has not really built on it much in the years since then. I also thought Veda's inclusion was premature, since she too had a very small body of releasing a steady stream of impressive and exciting albums. Possibly not to wide enough ecto accepatance to merit elevation to the pantheon, but arguably varied and challenging enough to be considered. (And, with all due respect Irvin, if you had only heard the second CD by any of the people in the Pantheon, your opinions of them might be different. My guess is that these could be risk free purchases, as I'm sure you can get rid of either of those discs here at cost. Peter Clark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Nov 1999 00:44:11 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Kristin Hersh/Brendan Perry Just got back from the Kristin Hersh/Brendan Perry show at the Bowery Ballroom. Last time I was at the Bowery Ballroom was for a Mila Drumke/Susan McKeown double bill, when the guys in back were doing all sorts of weird '70s disco things with the lights and the mirrorball. Fortunately this time the lights were pretty normal. My familiarity, or lack thereof, with Kristin Hersh and Brendan Perry was about the same--one track each on a 4AD sampler I have ("Your Ghost" and "American Dreaming" respectively) and a few listens at CD store listening stations. Kristin Hersh was about exactly what I expected. Unfortunately, what that means is that I take one listen to her voice, think "barefoot West Virginian trailer park denizen with laryngitis," and the rest of it goes completely out the window. She can do some nice things with her guitar, but I don't expect her ever to win me over. Brendan Perry surprised me before he even opened his mouth. I'd always imagined someone with a testosterone-oozing Neil Diamond/Bruce Springsteen voice would naturally have a generous head of hair, but instead here's this virtually bald, almost self-effacing fellow with protruding ears and a short, neat grey beard and moustache. And then, when he speaks, he's got this pedestrian British accent with no hint of what he does when he sings. He was backed by a band of four pretty straightforward musicians, "Irish geezers" as he called them: electric guitar, keyboards, bass, drums. I wasn't quick enough to get their names, except for John Bonner on keyboards and Lynn Garrett (?) on bass. Brendan alternated between acoustic and electric guitars. I didn't really expect too much, since based on what I'd heard I didn't really care too much for his "Neil Diamond mode," as somebody put it in a post awhile back. But overall I'd say I liked it, though since I wasn't familiar with most of the tunes, only a few things really struck me. Since I was standing behind the mixing booth, I had a clear view of the set list, and was able to correlate it pretty well with the music I was hearing. Here's what he played: I Must Have Been Blind Everybody's Been Burned A Captive Heart I Can See Now American Dreaming Lila Sloth Slide Machine In Power We Entrust Dolphins Death Will Be My Bride The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove Can You Feel It ****Encore: Chase the Blues Song to the Siren? I think it is. If you know anything else she's done, you're unlikely to be disappointed by "Deity". I might also add it isn't all that new, as it was released last year, if memory serves. In fact, she's getting ready to release another one - and Deity is already hard to locate, in Sydney shops at least... - ------------------------------------------------------ "Macintosh for Productivity, Linux for Development, Palm for Mobility, and Windows for Solitaire." - - spotted on a t-shirt @ macsurfshop.com - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 22:37:52 -0800 (PST) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: Re: Things for Ectophilic Music Addicts to do in Novemeber in SF On Wed, 3 Nov 1999, phclark wrote: > Yeah, that's right. Hey, I for one think it makes a dandy change of pace after all of those East Coast schedules we see posted here on a regular basis! :) Yay Drew!
