Hi all, Sorry to bother you all with this, but it concerns (some of) you too. My Black website is housed, along with a few others, on webspace from dutch provider Plex. They have started to act as censor, which means that I couldn't continue the websites in their current form. They suggest I make a page about my pets, or something. How ridiculous. Anyway, I need webspace. I can pay up to $20 a month for it, and would need at least 50 Meg, but preferably "unlimited" space. Does anyone know a provider who can help me with this, without placing those ugly ads, like Xoom and Geocities do? Your help would be highly appreciated. It was love at first listen for me, and subsequent listens have only made me appreciate the album even more. I'll also agree that it probably is her most accessible album, so if you don't own any of Emily's CDs then 4WB would be a great one to start with. Since I'm not particularly good at this I'll point you toward Emily's entry in the Ectophiles Guide for some very worthwhile descriptions of her music and her first two albums. As for a less worthwhile one, I tend to describe her stuff, especially with the last two albums, as a progressive/jazz hybrid with operatic-style vocals. Hey-- Well, it was actually me who mentioned the book, and yes, the author is the recently deceased Marion Zimmer Bradley, who decided after years of writing pulp fantasy to actually write something of note. Oh did she succeed--Mists of Avalon is now not only a great work of fiction but has been added to the syllabi of several college courses and a few high school courses that I have heard of or taken. As for MWABT being a good soundtrack, I can't say one way or another. I try to avoid listening to music as I'm reading, as it inevitably links the two pieces of media together. I read the Lord of the Rings once in high school while listening to ..."And then there were three" by Genesis, and now I hear "Burning rope" in my head every time I read The Two Towers. Of course, maybe I'm just peculiar in that way. Just so this isn't completely off topic, I wanted to ask folks--every week, three nights a week, I get to pick the closing music for one of the shows I'm running. It needs to be upbeat--just verging on techno--something that gets the kids up and out of the theatre after the show. I've played a little Garbage, got a nice reaction to DJ Rap the other day, did a little Trainspotting, and I'm going to throw in some Keoki and maybe even play Roy this week, but I'm running out of ideas. My own collection is just far too mellow unless I break out the disco stuff that I'd never admit to owning... Any suggestions of ectophilic music that I could foist upon the unsuspecting children? At any rate, I just wanted to note that a guy at a flower stand I was walking past randomly gave me a bouquet of flowers today. Languid and beautiful. I wish that I could see them in New York tomorrow since I heard Chris tell some people that they were gonna have a full band for the show at the Bottom Line. Including cello. She also had to cut out a number of songs from her set here to squeeze into the time the venue allowed her, which was kind of disappointing. But she was very gracious and appreciative of the crowd, saying that because she doesn't get up here that often, that she wasn't just gonna do 1 hour and get off stage. We discussed adding some names to the list and a number of people listed their personal pantheons but nothing ever came of it, mostly because it has taken me this long to site down and actually compile the messages that came in about it and to try to make any sense of it. There were only 22 people that clearly responded to the call, and it was over a year ago. I'm still not sure exactly how to do this, and I think voting on it might not be useful, though we could try it. Anyway, the artists listed with most frequency in those listings were: Kristin Hersh 6 Ingrid Karklins 6 Susan McKeown 5 Bjork 4 Peter Gabriel 4 Loreena McKennitt 4 Mary Margaret O'Hara 4 (If anyone wants the full list as I compiled it, I'd be happy to mail it to them.) I actually think the goddess list on the Ectophiles' Guide could be expanded to include all 7 of these artists without being diluted too much (the list currently consists of Happy, of course, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Veda Hille, Sarah McLachlan, and Jane Siberry. I would like to automatically add Kristin Hersh and Ingrid Karklins--they both seem shoo-ins to me. How about the rest? Does anyone have any objections to us adding any/all of them? Do we want a thumbs up/thumbs down vote? There are other artists I would like us to seriously consider--most notably Sheila Chandra as she was named as a goddess by several people in her entry in the Guide (I just did a search and no one else who isn't already on the goddess list was called a goddess as often as her) but I'm not sure of a mechanism for doing this. We don't want to add everybody or it won't mean anything. (And personally I'm tempted to kick Sarah off, but I know not everyone feels the same, and we do want as much consensus as is possible with a group with as diverse tastes as ecto!) Should we start from scratch? How to go about this? Ideas? Comments?
