She's playing in NYC this Friday, and my sister is considering interviewing her for her radio show*. All we actually know at this point is that she sang backing vocal's on Rufus' album and she has some very promising genes, so any opinions or questions from anyone who has seen one of her live shows or is familiar with her unreleased material would be very helpful. Today the Rutgers PostPeople finally brought us copies of Veda's new album. I know I'm going to have to listen to it over and over again to really appreciate it, but its been looping for a few hours now and I'm pretty sure anyone who hasn't ordered it should do so right now. One question: Why does she continue to be so fascinated by auto accidents? Chris. * Central Jersey Ectophiles (Are there any?): 88.7FM Mondays 10-12PM. She's quite good :) np: Guess... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 01:34:02 -0700 From: blah blah blah Subject: IDA and JENNY > neal copperman wrote: > > I was at Iota for a lovely afternoon concert of (heads up Irvin) - Jenny > Toomey and Dan Littleton, Warren DeFever and Ida.... > > I was kind of hoping that since all of Licorice was present, we'd get > something from that combo, but no such luck. In fact, I didn't know a > thing that Jenny Toomey did, but it was a standard loose and entertaining > set from her. hey thanks for the heads up neal. i saw JENNY do a show about four years ago (it was a solo show) where she basically asked the audience for requests and played them (including a half assed attempt at a GRENADINE song, which she stopped half way, and apologized as she didn't really know it that well, as GRENADINE really didn't play out that much). after the show i asked her if LIQUORICE was going to come out with anything new, and she said that they were working on the records, and the new stuff she played at the show was probably going to end up on the record. the TSUNAMI CD came out a year later, and none of the new songs she did at that show were on that CD. so i guess she was telling the truth. anyway, the new stuff you heard might actually be new LIQUORICE stuff. was there a song about reading SEVENTEEN magazine, or that was inspired by reading that sort of magazine? that was one of her new songs back then. i have to second whoever said that they would love to hear a solo JENNY TOOMEY cd. i would love that. but apparently the new LIQUORICE CD has been in the works for four years, half recorded and still be mixed. or something like that. one things though, TREY MANY who drums on HIS NAME IS ALIVE is also the drummer for LIQUORICE, so it sounds like not all the original members of LIQUORICE were there. TREY MANY has his own solo project going called VELOUR 100 which is quite nice. i recommend anyone who is into that whole LOW/IDA/IDAHO/ slowcore thing to pick it up. kinda earlier 4AD-ish, i really like the two CD's i have FALL SOUNDS and SONGS FROM THE RAINWATER. which reminds me, someone once emailed me and told me that he had a copy of the SLACK tape and would be willing to dub it for me, as it is now impossible to get. i never heard anything again from that person is he still on the list? if so, i would still love to get that.... thanks for the heads up. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 10:06:38 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Martha Wainwright/Veda On Tue, Oct 26, 1999 at 02:28:23AM -0400, Chris Montville wrote: > Is anyone familiar with Martha Wainwright? (I met so many ectophiles in very compressed time.) She did a wonderful set there, very warm and kinda folksy. I have a feeling (not having talked to her myself) that she'd be a wonderful interview. There's just too danged many of 'em to keep straight. Yes, Chris was at ectofest; strangely, I was just listening to his mp3 of Mila Drumke's set. Le'see if I can get this right. Probably not. Kate and Anna McGarrigle are sisters (there's a 3rd sister who sings, too). Kate arried Loudon Wainwright, whose sister is Sloan. Kate 'n Loudon had Rufus and Martha before they got divorced, making Marth 'n Rufus Sloan's niece and nephew respectively. Martha also appears on _The McGarrigle Hour_ (_highly_ recommended...great performances from the whole clan...and more!). In addition to singing on various other tracks, she also performs her own "Year of the Dragon" which is quite wonderful. When I saw Rufus many moons ago (this past winter?), he claimed that Martha's album would be coming out sometime...anyone know of any news on that? jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 10:38:20 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Martha Wainwright/Veda On Tue, Oct 26, 1999 at 10:41:47AM -0400, jburka@min.net wrote: > Joe, you've fallen victim of the Cult o' the Wainwrights. Anyone have an extra lying around, or know where one might be lurking in a bin somewhere, new or used? >> How timely. I was actually going to post this to the list. I was perusing www.ubl.com (Ultimate Band List) and found that they now have *every* Rhodes release listed. RI&II and Rearmament are $12.99. The remainder are $13.99. The graphics show the original artwork on all releases. I can only assume that these are now being made available by Samson, because after she signed and for some time, the only release I could find there was MWABT. I didn't check into it further to see what the availability was, but it's a glimmer of hope. There are even reviews of many of the discs. Some nice ones from Lady Slipper. All discs have audio samples...some have every song available. I followed a link to a VH1 Online review of MWABT that said this disc would be the perfect soundtrack to Mists of Avalon, which JoAnn (I think...or was it someone else?) recently mentioned. I recently read it, and while I would not have thought of it on my own, I tend to agree with this assessment. Happy hunting! This wasn't me, actually, but it's nice to know I'm known enough around here now to have other people be mistaken for me (or for me to be mistaken for other people?) I will have to check out this film now. Other news: Well, not really news, a request. If someone could send me the artist info for Dido's album, I can finish her page for the guide. I thought I had brought the sleeve back from home, but apparently I did not. Got a chance to properly listen to Emily Bezar's new cd today. sending Neile an update on that very soon. Anyway, go get it. I think it's more accessible than the other 2 discs. I was running around NYC looking for old Sheila Chandra cd's, didn't find any, but found a bunch at Best Price, but when I tried to order, I got an error. Grrr. I guess I will try another computer before asking for... whatever I would ask for. Well, off to class. Ugh. JoAnn, who would much rather sit here and continue to listen to Little Earthquakes. np: a little last bit of "China" before I *sniff* turn off the stereo and go to class. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 16:11:59 -0700 (PDT) From: John Drummond Subject: beautiful and fierce Y'all, Okay... Anyway, it's actually a book written by Marion Zimmer Bradley (I prolly got that wrong, too. My brain is mush after finally completing an audit that previously took five months that my new boss decided to do in two. Or should I say, decided *I* should do in two.) who recently passed away. It was a very interesting and detailed look at the Arthurian legend from the perspective of the women in the story. The story of the Christians and the Pagans, indeed! It spanned a couple of generations, but focused on Morgaine (aka Morgan) who is actually portrayed as a victim/heroine of sorts.
