(the mommyheads song, i think called "two flies in a cookiee jar" was also about an abusive relationship; i agree with neal that it was lovely, but the word "harrowing" also comes to mind. i thought i'd read reviews of the mommyheads that suggested they were aloud pop band?) > Warren's voice, which isn't really all that good. (It's on a boot I > bought last time I saw them, but it doesn't have any songs labeled on it. > "I can't live in this world any more" is the most often repeated line.) i don't claim to know hnia chapter and verse or anything, but "home," the song neal mentions, appears in two version on _stars on e.s.p._, and "are we still married" which also got an airing, appears in two versions on _home is in your head_ > Ida closed out the evening. Oddly enough, they have just recorded a children's album > (You Are My Flower). Yeah, it's a weird match, but it works pretty well. > I'm not sure how it would go over with kids, but I like it. It's fairly i think ida's lyrics are remarkable largely because they narrowly avoid succumbing into the banal. they're very plain-spoken and direct. i didn't find them at all sleepy -- there were a couple of moments when i was completely transported by the show, and the rest of it was just really, really good. i love my ida records, but they don't do justice to the live experience -- seeing them make that beautiful music right in front of you, moment to moment, hearing the sounds mix with each other (neal and i were close enough that we were hearing sound directly from the stage as well as through the p.a.) was stunning. warren defever sat on the side of the stage and played percussion on a couple of songs; i thought it emphasized how little these arrangements needed percussion. apparently the first week of the tour had a clarinetist who "had to go home," and a local was drafted to add a note or two (eb) at critical junctures. > Oh, another thing that was particularly cool was that there was a woman who > was somehow related to someone in the band there who kept dancing around > and singing. First off, I wouldn't really think of Ida as great dancing > music, though this woman managed to dance quite exuberantly to the rhythms > implied by the music. Better yet was the fact that she knew all the songs > and often sang along with excellent harmonies. i was reminded of the show neal and i saw with kinnie starr and veda hille, at which kinnie starr literally sang back-up from over our shoulders. (another remarkable performance.) okay, the impertinent question: the big record deal is clearly not going well. dan littleton jested repeatedly about "liberating" their new record from prison. dan's brother michael seems no longer to be drumming with them, and i thought someone told me he died? or maybe i'm confusing ida with heavenly? last year's e.p. is dedicated to the memory of michael s. littleton 1932-1998, which would not seem to be dan littleton's brother. anyone have the definitive scoop? - -- d. - - oh no, you've just read mail from doug = dmw@radix.net - get yr pathos - - www.pathetic-caverns.com -- books, flicks, tunes, etc. = reviews - - www.fecklessbeast.com -- angst, guilt, fear, betrayal! = guitar pop ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Oct 1999 13:35:22 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Neile's September Report At 12:53 PM -0400 10/23/99, FAMarcus@aol.com wrote: >If i could encapsulate why i subscribe to this board this post by neile would >be all i need. i made notations and now i will start looking. thanks neile, >as always. This was another musical weekend with way too little sleep. :) Friday night I braved the horror that is metro-NYC-area traffic to go see Kristin Hersh at Maxwell's in Hoboken. (Mike, next time I advocate driving over taking the train, shoot me, ok? :P) We missed the opener -- good thing it wasn't Thursday, because Dorothy Scott opened for her then and I would've been really upset. We did get there in time to see all of Kristin's set, though, and as always she ruled. Before one of her solo shows I'm always not nearly as excited as I am when she's going to be with a band, then afterwards I end up wondering just what the hell I was thinking. This time was no exception. She did a good mix of stuff from _Sky Motel_, earlier solo "hits" like "Your Ghost" and "Gazebo Tree", and old Throwing Muses material including "Chains Changed" and "I Hate My Weight". Definitely worth the godawful trip there and back. Last night woj and I headed up to Boston, where we met JeffW (and later Paul Kim and Ofer) to see Susan Werner at Club Passim in Cambridge. It was Regatta Day (ye olde Head Of The Charles, which I remember fondly from my college days), so the entire area was an utter zoo. We managed to worm our way into and out of Newbury Comics with maximum damage, though I did forget to pick up the two things I went in there for (the new Eurythmics album and that Loreena McKennitt live thing). :P Haven't had a chance to listen to anything but the Julia Darling album, which was a pleasant surprise. Tasty. I wish I'd known she was going to be playing in New Haven beforehand, instead of two days after the fact. :P Oh yeah, the Susan Werner shows were good too. :) We went to both shows, which meant we had to suffer through the opener twice (Janet Feld, a very boring singer/songwriter who obviously thought herself a guitar goddess and a fine stand-up comedian, but in contrast with whom she was opening for she came off looking like even more of a pretender than I'm sure she does otherwise). Susan's early show was a pretty standard set, but the late show was, in her own words, "Sooze goes wacky". She closed the second set with the aria from _Carmen_, complete with unplugged guitar and a sort of flamenco dance into the crowd at the end, that was simply stunning and was pretty much representative of the entire show: jaw-droppingly incredible and fall-down hilarious all at once. She never ceases to amaze. Definitely worth getting home at 4:30 am. I just have to ask, though -- it was my first visit to Passim, and I need to know if the service is always that bad? For the first show we were sitting in chairs at the back because we couldn't get a table, and we were told the waiter would get us drinks, but when we ordered iced teas and half an hour later they still hadn't come, he basically told us he wasn't going to get them for us because he had too many tables to take care of. It was an ordeal to get them from the counter, too. I've heard from a friend that she's never had good service there, so I'm just curious. In all other respects it seemed to be a great venue, though. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 00:20:07 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: weekend music At 11:53 PM 10/24/99 -0400, meredith wrote: >Friday night I braved the horror that is metro-NYC-area traffic to go >see Kristin Hersh at Maxwell's in Hoboken. It was defintely worth the overly painful trip there, and the much quicker trip back.
