I just saw Zap Mama tonight, for the third time in my life. I'll be seeing them a fourth time this Monday in Northampton, the first time I've gotten to see them twice on the same tour. They've been together since 1991 and this is only their third ever tour of North America - not an opportunity to be missed lightly. There is, indeed, a lot more instrumentation in their show than there has been in the past: a full drum kit, bass, electric guitar, and keyboards / sampler. But vocal instrumentation is still at the core of their sound, as always. It seems the first 5 years or so of Zap Mama were spent perfecting that aspect of the sound, and not Marie feels she can add instruments and the vocals can hold their own. They have gone further with vocal instrumentation and sound creativity than anyone I have ever seen. This is the best vocal work I could ever have imagined, if only I could have imagined it before I'd heard them. And their performance skills have not waned in the least, either. Combine the best elements of Sheila Chandra, M-Pact, Baaba Maal, Oumou Sangare, and add touches of The Bobs, Loreena McKennitt, Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn, Spearhead, Happy Rhodes, and Blue Man Group, and you get some idea of what Zap Mama might be like. But if you haven't seen them perform, you can't really know. SEE THEM. I stayed up REALLY late last night. although, i guess if you go to bed at 7 AM that's not really going to bed really late but really early? anyway... So I finally listened to LAMB- FEAR OF FOURS. I'd heard so much about it from ecto, and half of me thought I would really like it and half thought I would really hate it, but I had to find out, so I bought it (with the remix cd, same price, which I haven't listened to yet) a week or maybe 2 ago, and just worked up the nerve to listen to it last night. Quite interesting. I've never heard any other Lamb work. I really like the music but the vocals are disturbing. It's definitely the kind of thing that would have to grow on a person (or at least a person like me) but I can't tell yet whether it will or not. Also, I listened to ALANIS MORRISSETTE'S SUPPOSED FORMER INFATUATION JUNKIE last night. I'm making a Canadian compilation tape, and she is originally Canadian. I actually rather liked it. Only listened to about half. My god- 17 songs! I had never even thought about listening to it. When I saw it in stores, I thought the cover art was so obnoxiously dumb, but then listening to the album, it makes sense.. all this psychological chaos and anger. So the songs are extremely psychological/psychoanalytical, and the lyrics can be awkward and kind of stumbling, but I like it. The music is very good. And I like her voice better than on the first album. Actually, that album, although I've never listened to it in its entirety, has also grown on me over time. When an artist is so overplayed and you just get inundated with them, it's really easy to hate them and not really listen to the songs. So when I heard them a lot less, I began to actually like some of them. Although I don't think I'll ever like "You Oughta Know" Also, REBECCA MARTIN, formerly of ONCE BLUE, has a new album out called THOROUGHFARE. Info on ordering at her website http://www.rebeccamartin.com And she's playing a bunch of gigs in NYC, mostly at the Fez it looks like, in October and November. Is anyone going to her show Wed the 20th at the Fez ($8) or Natalie MacMaster's show on the 23rd in NJ? That's it. Mmmm. Tasty. I, too, heard an awful lot of hype before I heard the album, and I too was a little put-off by Lou's vocals. Give 'em a chance to work their way into your head. It's such a fabulous album, and the vocal stylings are a big part of that for me. > np: melissa ferrick _everything i need_ Heh. So the sound isn't as good as the studio albums I've heard, but it's got a lot of energy. From the picture it looks like he's playing for a million people. Since I listen to lots of boots anyway, I don't notice at all that it sounds a bit hissy. Recommended if you like that sort of thing. If you are kind of curious, it's not the first one I'd go for. In fact, I'd probably go for something that was less purist, like Mustt Mustt, his teaming with Michael Brook (on RealWorld) that mangles the flow and meaning of the songs (not that I'd notice) in an interesting setting. Her management contacted me through looking at deja.com for mentions of Rebecca's name. Ecto is archived there through one of the foreign sites (I wish this weren't the case--I personall would rather ecto didn't get archived there). I found out that's where Rebecca's management person was reading ecto because she thought she'd answered Neal's question about Rebecca's reference to Turing in the title of her new disc--I had to tell her that ecto was a mailing list and that she couldn't send messages to it through deja.com like a regular newsgroup.
