DRESSY BESSY SARAH DOUGHER MEG LEE CHIN SOLEX THE PROMISE RING QUASI SNOW PATROL SALAKO the last two are offshoots of BELLE AND SEBASTIAN i do believe. or at least, they are on the same label that is run by members of B&S (JEEPSTER). i was kinda amused by another offshoot band (LOOPER) but it wore thin after repeat listenings, and THE GENTLE WAVES was never really caught on in my ear. also has anyone heard the new LORI CARSON? i ran across the new CD at AMOEBA, but didn't pick it up, waiting to find it used i guess. having a hard time, and now i am wondering if i should just bite the bullet and buy it new. other notes: those who did not pick up an AIMEE MANN sneak preview ep at her shows, can get one on her website, www.aimeemann.com i just checked to see when her new one is coming out, and there is no date. it has been revised as well, a new look. does anyone know why the KCRW compilations have changednames from RARE ON AIR to MORNING BECOMESECLECTIC? just wondering. the latest CD (what would havebeen RARE ON AIR vol.5) is quite ecto friendly, with performances by AIR, BUFFALO DAUGHTER, BETH ORTON, PJ HARVEY, MORCHEEBA, and SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER. there is also a very lovely acoustic version of TORN (the NATALIE IMBRUGLIA song) performed by the original artist EDNASWAP. it gave me new appreciation for the song, though i have to admit, i never really liked their version all that much on their album. the new EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL is bit too gay disco club music for me. kinda generic sounding, it sounds like it would fit well on one of those gay dance compilations like PRIDE 99, and ANTHEM VOL2, etc. the ones that have all the popular songs, remixed with a ubiquitious under- beat, in which all songs have been rendered into one long 72 minute beat, with different vocals on top. perhaps it will grow on me though. for sure their collaboration with DEEP DISH - THE FUTURE OF THE FUTURE (STAY GOLD) is one of the weaker songs (i picked up the single months ago when it came out, in anticipation of new EBTG and was highly dissapointed. hmmmm.... speaking of gay disco songs, CYNDI LAUPER came out with her version of DISCO INFERNO and apparently was nominated for a grammy for best dance song. it has been climbing the dance charts. dunno if people were aware of it. she has been touring with CHER, so maybe she can have a comeback ala BELIEVE. or maybe not. but i read that her pilot she filmed for her sitcom wasn't picked up by the network. ah well. saw LOW the other day, and it was fantasticly depressing, yet marvellous nonetheless. you can get their latest EP at the show, a CHRISTMAS ep, of the most depressing christmas music you have ever heard. fabulous. now i can add to my holiday blues by listening to LOW. i may never recover this year. the MARINE RESEARCH cd is quite excellent for those who liked TALLULAH GOSH and HEAVENLY. the new band with former members of said groups, it is still twee and cute, but with a little more bite, less sugar coated, and a little more melancholic. thumbs up to their new album SOUNDS FROM THE GULF STREAM. reminds me a bit of LUSH, but then the last HEAVENLY album was already moving in that direction. ironically LUSH was moving in a more pop direction as well. and both ended with a member killing themselves. MARINE RESEARCH though is quite a comeback, and a very mature return to form for them. i have yet to track down the SING SING CD, so i have no opinion on post LUSH band members outings (though i was not impressed with MIKI on the latest RENTALS cd. on the whole it wasn't all that great an album). and coming highly recommended from an indiefriend of mine is the band DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE. a little bit of THAT DOG (indiepop violin action going on) and a little bit of moog action going (ala first RENTAL CD or PULSARS) but with more a moody sound going on, ala IDAHO or VELOUR 100 (or even a little bit of SPAIN). beware though, male vocals, not female. thumbs up, and the cd booklet for their cd SOMETHING ABOUT AIRPLANES gets bonus points for their use of translucent vellum paper, and diecut ovals. their name though, negates the bonus points. :) and that is all. irvin ps. i apologize to those who don't know me if what i had written in the past offended anyone. just as it was stated by someone else, i respect everyone's opinion, and feel that we all have a right to state our own opinions. i may disagree with them, and i may or may not take things as seriously as they were meant to be. but i cannot help my own reactions or my own feelings and stand by what i said earlier. whether or not you agree is your own decision. and for the record, though i do tend to lurk much more nowadays (you would never know that from my past few posts, but i haven't really posted all that much in the past couple of years), i do have strong ties with ECTO from a historical perpective, and do view it as a community. after all a community is just a group of people with something in common, and for ECTO that is music. whether or not you view it as such is your own decision. this does not mean i view everyone as a friend. a few of the members i view as friends (and i mean that in every sense of the word, i have gone and visited ecto members, talked with them on the phone, and had them help me through bad times of mine, even flaked on a few of them, much as i do with my other friends), most as mere aquaintances or email pals, and a very select few i dislike to the extreme. but that is what you get with any community. CHARLEY was someone who i viewed as a friend, and who i still view as a friend. this is why i reacted the way i did. i won't post any more about this. i just hope this clarifies my own perspective, and everyone on ECTO does not view me as an overreactive nutcase. the case that my nuts are held in are most certainly innert and quite inactive at the moment. damn i need a boyfriend. whoops too much info. np. It is a fantastic CD. One of the few I still listen to after all these years. May I also suggest a independent release by a group called Clockwise? Excellent work. Jellyfish/Beatles/early Police. They have recently disbanded, but if you'd like to check it out, you can contact the singer/songwriter at progers@pcrmusic.com There's been a bit of a problem with his e mail recently, so if it's returned, try later. (or contact me. I can get in touch with him quite easily) Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Oct 1999 10:27:02 -0400 (EDT) From: rachel kramer bussel Subject: Re: back to the music On Wed, 6 Oct 1999, blah blah blah wrote: > DRESSY BESSY > SARAH DOUGHER > MEG LEE CHIN > SOLEX > THE PROMISE RING > QUASI > SNOW PATROL > SALAKO Dressy Bessy are SO twee...I mean, I love them, but you have to have a high tolerance for all things cute - lines like "I'll be over there/you stand here/she's got pretty hair/you stand there" - live they are pretty good. You can get their albums at http://www.indies.com Sarah Dougher - http://www.kpunk.com - also of the Lookers, the Crabs, Cadallaca. Her album DAY ONE is excellent! She is playing at Maxwell's in Hoboken on Sunday and an as-yet-unannounced venue in the NYC area on Monday night...she is so great. I also recommend her 7" single on K Records with "stumble down" and "breakin in a brand new broken heart." The closest comparison I can make is Lois - a kinda wry, singer songwriter/punk approach, some somber songs, some kindof cute - Sarah is very stark at her live shows, usually just her on guitar, but she is excellent. Quasi - they keep getting better and better (and better!) with each album. THe latest one, Field Studies, is just wonderful...they are on tour, Elliott Smith may be playing bass for them - anyway, Sam Coomes plays an organ, a Roxichord, and he will just go crazy on it - standing on it, playing with his head/arms/legs/feet/hands and just going wild, and Janet Weiss, ex-wife of Sam and drummer for Sleater-Kinney, plays the shit out of her drums...it's quite a spectacle. They play kindof 70's sounding pop and sound like there are more than 2 people in the band. They are on Up records...I don't know the exact email addy, but if you do a search for Quasi, my friend Jimmy Draper has a site that will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about them! :) Rachel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Oct 1999 18:59:39 -0400 (EDT) From: joann.whetsell@oberlin.edu (JoAnn Whetsell) Subject: EMILY BEZAR CD release party >Date: Thu, 07 Oct 1999 14:25:31 -0800 >From: Emily Bezar >Subject: EMILY BEZAR CD release party >To: everyone@emilybezar.com >MIME-version: 1.0 > >Dear friends and fans, > >I just wanted to let you know that at last, my new album >"FOUR WALLS BENDING" is available! >Please find all the ordering information at my website: > >http://www.emilybezar.com > >And please come help us celebrate at our CD release bash on >October16 in San Francisco!
