She looked great as usual... What was with the mix on Letterman? I rarely watch his show -- is the sound for visiting artists usually that bad? With my eyes closed, I could tell that one guitar and part of a drumkit was there; opening them, I could tell what some of the buried sounds were by reading Bowie's lips. The presence of all those other people didn't seem to result in any sound. (And yeah, I'm down with an ear infection, but I listened to it again in mono to see if it would help. Nope.) I grabbed the new album immediately, and am eagerly waiting for my ear to resume functioning so I can give it a good listen on headphones *sigh* - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Shekhinah: The Presence http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Oct 1999 10:48:01 -0500 (EST) From: Greg Dunn Subject: Re: Big Polygram victims "Steve I said:" > > And Emm Gryner. And what a loss that would be! Emm was so captivating live, that I was afraid the new album would disappoint me. It really retains the essence of her music and performances, IMHO. Hard to produce an album that cleanly. > Did anyone here see Emm singing backup for David Bowie on Saturday Night > Live or Letterman? She looked great as usual... I think I could actually hear her occasionally in the bg vocal; she has a very distinctive voice, and was obviously cutting loose on the chorus. And yes, she looked quite spiffy in that skirt. :-) I couldn't decide if she'd gotten her hair cut, or if it was just teased, though. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Oct 1999 12:49:24 -0400 (EDT) From: joann.whetsell@oberlin.edu (JoAnn Whetsell) Subject: emm gryner Hi. I was wondering if anyone knew what was up with the living room tour? When someone posted about it last spring, I was really excited and e-mailed the contact person, Joni Daniels, who said it sounded good and Emm would like to come play here (Oberlin College). Then I wrote her again this fall, and the e-mail got returned. jd@interlog.com was the address I had. Does anyone have a new address or an idea how to contact Emm or someone? Thanks. Joni has a new e-mail address, actually, so that's why it got bounced, I think. She's changed addresses a few times... Anyway, the Living Room Tour is on hold b/c of Emm's tour w/ Bowie and I think other obligations she had, so they weren't sure (last I heard, b/c I was going to host one too) when they would have another but hopefully soon! You can always direct inquiries here: deaddaisyrecords@yahoo.com, and someone should get back to you... The shows they did were pretty successful, though! The best was @ in Detroit, and myself and three other songwriters got to join her for "Hook Machine" at the end of the show ;) There are pics from that show and other Emm things here: http://emmsfans.arecool.net and at her official site: http://www.emmgryner.com run by the awesome Steve Ito ;) Jessica www.aquezada.com/jess | www.earbuzz.com/jessicaweiser ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Oct 1999 01:44:06 -0400 (EDT) From: joann.whetsell@oberlin.edu (JoAnn Whetsell) Subject: stuff I must really be trying to go for a record of EWS here. Either that or I'm manic without most of the symptoms. Anyway, I've been buying tons of wonderful new music lately. And I got to listen to a bunch of stuff at Borders tonight that I've heard talked about here but had never actually heard. Including Sleater-Kinney _The Hot Rock_, Sophie B. Hawkins _Timbre_, Tannas, Me'Shell N'Dgeocello _Bitter_ and other stuff I can't remember. That was all stuff I liked but didn't buy. Oh, Kila. I liked that too. What I DID buy was Yungchen Lhamo _Tibet, Tibet_; Joji Hiroto _The Gate_; and Mara! with Martenitsa Choir _Sezoni_. These are all on Real World Records. I just finished Yungchen Lhamo's page for the Guide, and everyone who has any interest in her should really check her out, esp. if you like Sheila Chandra. Joji Hiroto is a Japanese percussionist/flutist/vocalist. Maybe other ists too, but I haven't listened to it yet, so I don't know. I kept running into this album and thinking it looked interesting, so I thought, hmm, this must mean something. I did hear one song, and it was really interesting, kind of electronic/ambient. He did percussion on Y. Lhamo's first album. Mara!... is an Australian singer who did this album with a choir she also founded. Another thing I just ran into in the store and thought looked interesting. The sound clips... some were a cappella, some instrumental, some mixed. Reminded me a bit of Varttina. But I haven't listened to this album yet either. Natalie MacMaster _In My Hands_ More gorgeous and wonderful than I would ever have imagined! It's really lively and imaginative. The 2nd song is really cool, the way it progresses from this relatively simple, undistinguished Irish lilt into a really lively tune and then into a kick-ass rocker. And the first track which has elements of all kinds of styles of music... very cool. And the rest of the album, mostly instrumental, is wonderful to boot. Catie Curtis _A Crash Course in Roses_ I was kind of scared about getting this, because someone said if you liked Shawn Colvin's _A Few Small Repairs_ then you'll like this album. I only like about half of AFSR, but I really like Catie's new album. It has all the strengths of her last one, great songwriting, great melodies, and an interesting mix of folk/pop. But I think I like the self-titled album a bit better, though the new one has only had one spin so far. Tori Amos _1000 Oceans_ single. Waiting for the edition with live versions of both "Baker Baker" and "Winter" was well worth it. Both are gorgeous solo versions. And it's interesting to backtrack and see the development (backwards) of Tori's piano ballads. I can't get the hypercard video to work though. It keeps saying there's an error, and I don't know if that's the disc itself or my computer. Though it also didn't work in my roommate's computer. Patty Larkin _A Go Go_ I think I mentioned this earlier. It's really good. I wish she had put in some between song banter though. It's an interesting mix of songs- 6 from Angels Running, 4 from Strangers World, and only 2 from Perishable Fruit. And a few others. I don't know why the back catalogue is more prevalent on the album. Still the versions (all solo I think) are energetic and refreshing, and even the songs I don't like that much on the studio albums, I like much better here.
