Ticket prices are $15 at the door or $16.50 by credit card. Procrastinators are encouraged to call to gauge whether or not a sell-out is likely. Are you listening Patrick Moseley? Once again, doors open at 7PM and show begins at 8PM. The show is being advertised through the Wire's mailing list and WXPN per Jim Howie, although I haven't heard anything on XPN personally. Hopefully Patrick Moseley will find a way out of his commitment and enjoy his very first Happy show. Some folks would give up their spleen for the chance to catch HR live. Project Lo will be appearing at the same venue in mid-November as noted on the Terra website. Que Cumberland....sorry misspell...New Cumberland is just a hotbed of activity these days. Add to this the warm, muttering voice of Luke Sutherland waxing poetic and weird on subjects that ranged from the arty (Man Ray, the surrealists) to the political (sexism, racism). What stopped this Scottish band from their entrance into, say, the Stereolab/ art-rock crowd was that they defied classification. Stereolab can almost be used and listened to in the same way people listen to the Cocteaus; LKF was too out-there and wore their artiness on their sleeves. The rest of _Blush_ follows this pattern, with Sutherland singing soto = voce on 2 tracks. Lush, orchestral electronica is what you?d file this under, up= on first listen. Now Reading: Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 00:02:56 -0400 From: neal copperman Subject: sonia cd release party Last night I paid my first visit to the Recher Theater in Towson to see Sonia's CD release party for her new disc, "me too". Or perhaps I should say "sonia of diasappear fear", since that is who the album is credited to. Recher Theater is a redone movie theater, and I was quite pleased to see what appeared to be several hundred people turn up, far more impressive then the 50 or so for the release of her previous solo album. Perhaps it was the billing of the show as Sonia & disappear fear that helped. And I'm sure that Sonia's selection as best singer/songwriter by the Baltimore City Paper in the previous week's Best Of Baltimore issue didn't hurt. It appears that Sonia may have moved back to town from San Francisco, so this was a bit of a homecoming. And unlike last time, when she played solo, this time she had a band with her, many of them familiar faces, notably bassist (Kurt?) who had been playing in Lisa Cerbone's band since disappear fear disbanded. I'm sure Sherlyn will be suitably jealous (I wasn't going to name names for fear of a mispelling, but gee, I find a a specific thank you to one "sheryln koo" in the liner notes) when I say that the crowd and I were thrilled to see that Cindy was with her for about half of the evening! (She left at 11.) So we were treated to some of the old favorites: Box of Tissues, Deep Soul Diver, and Postcard from Texas with the original disappear fear harmonies. I haven't had a chance to hear that for many years, so it was a pretty big deal. Hopefully Sonia will be able to lure Cindy out more for local shows. The only song missing from those days that I'd have loved to have heard again was For Hollywood (I Will), though it was a shame that Cindy left before they sang Sexual Telepathy and Sink the Censorship. Also notable was a brief appearance by former df guitarist Howard Markhman and accordianist Brian Simms. While they are the two best players from past versions of df, it wasn't so easy to enjoy their strengths when the band swelled to 7 people. It was still good to see them on stage though. Some of the new songs seemed pretty strong and somewhat surprising. My favorite was Me, Too, the title track of the album. It provides an interesting counterpoint to longtime concert highlight Is There Anybody Here? (written by Phil Ochs). That song always strikes me as strident and somewhat unfair, though, as usual, it was one of the best moments of the show. Sonia and Cindy mesh so beautifully on it, and it's so damn catchy. Me, Too balances the military damning with an understanding of some of the values that veterans might represent, then tying it nicely into gay politics and the standard df plea for understanding. (Well, that's what I got based on one live listen, at least.) While Sonia was as lively as ever, once Cindy left, I found the current band to be somewhat lackluster. And I think that was mostly the guitarist/keyboardist, as the rhythm section was quite solid. One guy had the role that has previously been filled by some pretty amazing people (the guests above), and while he seemed fine, I didn't find him particularly transforming. Not that it matters much in this town. The band just has to approximate any of the songs to get the mostly adoring (and surprisingly young) crowd singing along. They are touring around the country (no Cindy though, I'm sure), and put on a lively rowsing show if you like something that sounds a bit like a mix between Indigo Girls-style folk/pop and Bruce Springsteen's anthemic sing alongs. neal still doing that veda thing ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 21:23:09 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Rebecca Timmons' new album At 11:40 PM -0400 9/23/99, neal copperman wrote: >At 7:45 PM -0700 9/23/99, Neile Graham wrote: > >>n.p.
