BTW, the spec says the lead-out should be at least one and a half minutes, so you should be able to consistantly overburn by that much. Drew N.P. Cranberries / Collective Soul, 18-Sep-99 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Sep 1999 02:03:24 -0700 From: plegm master Subject: ramblings, reviews, & requests wanted post and say that i finally had a chance to see KRISTIN HERSH perform live and she was fantastic. highly recommended to anyone who has the chance. her latest album is also great, and she seems to be a in great mood. i was total geek and gave her a sunflower when i got her to sign my REAL RAMONA CD, but she seemed genuinely pleased to see someone with a THROWING MUSES CD. pick up a few other things in my shopping spree including: EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL - FIVE FATHOMS kinda bland sounding. very gay disco. i was worried about this direction after hearing the single they did with DEEP DISH called THE FUTURE OF THE FUTURE. very generic sounding. i am hoping that they are a little more unique in their sound in the new album. BETH ORTON - CENTRAL RESERVATION singles listening to them now. all remixes. too bad there aren't any live or bsides. the most successful one is certainly the WILLIAM ORBIT remix. skip disc two with the DEEP DISH remixes. not really worth the $10 i shelled out. SARAH CRACKNELL - LIPSIDE solo album by the voice from SAINT ETIENNE. released in 97 but never here in the US. finally found a cheap import of it ($12!). definitely worth getting. very ST. E sounding - in fact i would have not clue it wasn't a ST. E album if it didn't have their name on it. now if i could only track down that solo single that NINA PERSSON from THE CARDIGANS did.... ALUMINUM GROUP. why hasn't anyone told me about them before? not exactly ECTOish (gasp. male singer!). but rather loungy fun. their latest PEDALS features my friend EDITH FROST, but in truth i really like their second album PLANO the best. fans of BELLE and SEBASTIAN should check them out. intelligent lyrics, and fey sounding vocals, think a loungey MORRISSEY, or a new wave sounding BELLE and SEB. MAGNETIC FIELDS - 69 LOVE SONGS. three disc box set. ltd edt. don't worry if you didn't get the box set though. they are rereleasing it in october with some artwork changes. well worth getting if you like STEPHIN MERRITT and his output. SM has always been very varied in his styles, but this three disc set is pushing that to the limits. there are certainly some fillers. but on the whole quite excellent with some classics. i would recommend disk one first with disk three the middle and disk two the weakest. but they all have some classic SM songs. just be warned that it is a very eclectic collection, and with four other singers, it sounds more like a THE 6TH'S album than a MAGNETIC FIELDS album. THE 6THS' by the way have a new album ready to be released, as soon as they find someone to release it. so far the only people who have pretty much confirmed to be on it are SARAH CRACKNELL, and MARC ALMOND. KD LANG and DIAMANDA GALAS both declined. damn. i would love to hear DIAMANDA GALAS tackle a STEPHIN MERRIT song. CAKE LIKE - GOODBYE, SO WHAT very crunchy indie pop. how come they have never come up here? kinda FUZZY/VELOCITY GIRL in sound. i read something about them in some magazine, the members all have some sort of history of rock music. anyone help me out with info? i know i read about it, but am drawing a blank. also new stuff (to me anyway): KOMEDA (WHAT MAKES IT GO) KRISTIN HERSH (MURDER MISERY AND THEN GOODNIGHT) THROWING MUSES (IN A DOG HOUSE) BIS (SOCIAL DANCING) FOLK IMPLOSION (latest, had it for awhile actually, before it had a title, so i don't know the name of it) MORCHEEBA (BIG CALM) GENTLE WAVES (GREEN FIELDS OF FOREVER) THE FIELD MICE (WHERE'D YOU LEARN TO KISS THAT WAY?) THE ALUMINUM GROUP (WONDER BOY PLUS) FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE (RED DRAGON TATOO single) and finally some request for info: can anyone give me info on the band THE GAZE? i do believe it is a ROSE MELBERG project? or i might be mistaken. also someone recommended the band ORANGE CAKE MIX to me. i have heard the name badgered about, but surprisingly enough have never heard their stuff. any one have opinions? thoughts? and can anyone tell me when IDA is going to release a new album? they were signed to CAPITOL but i haven't heard anything at all about a new release. wassup wid dat? cheers thanks a lot. irvin - --------- "the worst thing about popular musicians today is that they're too similar. if ALANIS MORRISETTE were the only person who sounded anything like her, you could enjoy her as difficult listening - like DIAMANDA GALAS or MEREDITH MONK. since there are 20 people who sound exactly like ALANIS MORRISSETTE, i find it impossible to enjoy her records." - -STEPHIN MERRIT in OUT MAGAZINE. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 10:19:49 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: Re: ramblings, reviews, & requests On Sat, 18 Sep 1999, plegm master wrote: > can anyone give me info on the band THE GAZE? i do believe it is a > ROSE MELBERG project? or i might be mistaken. Rose Melberg plays drums (!) but doesn't write and sings iirc only occasional backup, in Gaze, who have two records _Mitsumeru_ and _Shake the Pounce_, on K. (The latter drew some attention for including a cover of an old Game Theory tune.) My fondness for virtually all things Melberg and moderately high tolerance for the twee genre should be a matter of record, but these records lack sharpness in either songcraft or performance to elevate them above the mainstream of indie pop. > and can anyone tell me when IDA is going to release a new album? they > were signed to CAPITOL but i haven't heard anything at all about a > new release. wassup wid dat? i spoke to Dan Littleton a month or so ago; it didn't sound like anything terribly imminent was going on in the Ida camp, although i think he did say they'd been doing some recording, but probably nothing more out this year. You did get the EP that came out over the summer, didn't you? ... saw a great triple bill last night: openers jejune were unknown to me but i was captivated about two songs in. multi-gender mostly midtempo indie pop in a not-entirely-unlike-versus vein, with live chops way above average, and some >really< good songs. tracking their new disc _This Afternoons Malady_; now, it does a much better job of capturing the loud/cathartic side of the band than most records in the genre; i'd recommend it pretty highly. special bonus: one of the lyrics mentions beryl markham; how flipping cool is that??! sarah shannon, formerly of velocity girl (not to mention starry eyes) popped up with a new project that at least for the night included geoff turner (best known around dc these days for running one of our finest independent studios) on guitar, phil from tuscadero on bass, a drummer i didn't recognize doubtless drawn from the local indie rock cognoscenti. the big surprise was sarah shannon playing guitar as well as singing (not buried in the mix like the traditional singer's rhythm guitar, either; it was way out front in your face). she's not yet a terribly confident player (she had to look at the fretboard enough that it interfered with her singing) but some of the songs were strong, and they sound even better on the 5-song e.p. "estheraho" that she was hawking after the set. headliners bettie serveert just stunned me. the velvet underground covers set from last year did a long way in my mind to elevate them above the mass of pretty-good indie bands, but last night's set showed a level of ensemble playing on par with the likes of yo la tengo. lead guitarist peter visser doesn't favor pure noise like yo la's kaplan does, but the band shows a similar facility with dynamics and a tendency to stretch out on some very tasty instrumental breaks. - -- d. dept. of shameless self-promotion: 10pm sat 9 oct black cat, wash dc w/ lesbian boy, yuma house; $6. 9.30pm mon 11 oct galaxy hut, arlington va w/ TBA; FREE ...ectophiles always welcome... - - oh no, you've just read mail from doug = dmw@radix.net - get yr pathos - - www.pathetic-caverns.com -- books, flicks, tunes, etc. = reviews - - www.fecklessbeast.com -- angst, guilt, fear, betrayal! = guitar pop ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 07:51:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Rubber DeNiro Subject: Re: LISA GERMANO Oh, Irvin, I would do anything, to anyone, for this disc. Orange Cake Mix is the one-man recording project of Jim Rao. He's put out a *lot* of records (discography, ordering, etc., at http://orangecakemix.virtualave.net/), of varying individual character, but the otherall style strikes me as a lower-fi, less-baroque Magnetic Fields. My recommendation for a starting point is either _Another Orange World_ or _Silver Lining Underwater_, both released by Darla Records. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 13:12:28 -0700 From: Dave Williamson Subject: Re: OT - New Bruce Cockburn album Gary Davis wrote: > I've heard this album and I think it's great! The new album certainly continues the Colin Linden partnership period. But there is something new and fresh on BINO, DIT. Maybe it's the backing vocals, or the mesh of Lucinda's voice with Bruce's. I'm just getting caught up on all the discussion of ectofest recordings and what to do with them. It has also been brought to my attention that the recordings were done without the permission of all of the artists involved. While I personally love the idea of making a "best of" CD and selling it with all proceeds going to the charities, I've got some serious damage control to run here before we can even think about making that reality. ectofest is intended to be a long-running event that has integrity. Unfortunately, the discussions that have been going on here this week are seriously jeopardizing that. It's pointless at the moment to be making concrete plans for what to do with the recordings that are out there. If and when we have the necessary permissions in hand from the artists, we will let everyone know and contact those who can help us get that ball rolling. Until then, let's hold off on the trees and such, ok? I'm sure no one wants to jeopardize any future concerts, or to upset any of the artists (not that you were even accusing anyone of that). Can you tell us anything about how these discussions are progressing? Or if there has been any feedback (positive or negative) from any of the artists involved? The simple reality is that, with the artist's support, we can make something nice and earn more money for the charities (or to offset ectofest debt.... hey, can someone comment on the alleged debt from the show? Did it actually lose money? Did the charities make money? If so to either, how much?). If the artist's are opposed to this, then it's probably not a great idea to do anything "official". But the artists should realize that it was a heavily booted show, and in the small world that is ecto, a show that is generating enthusiastic interest. And if they do not want to be part of a disc, that's fine. However their performances will be available to anyone in the same way boots are available on lists more isolated from performers and in the world in general. That is, anyone can ask anyone who has one (which, right now, includes anyone who taped it OR downloaded it), and will probably get a copy. All artist reluctance will do is push it underground, and remove any charitable contributions from the activity. Well, I hadn't hear the new songs as often as Meth has, and frankly none of them had made that big an impression on me. After my experience with _Here is a picture_, though, I've learned to just keep listening, as familiarity with the songs makes them stronger, and just as with that album, my initial mild attraction to the songs gradually grew and grew...and shows every sign of keeping on growing. With the release of each of Veda's albums since the first two (_songs about people and buildings_ and _path of a body_) which I got at the same time, the more I've heard the albums the more important to me and rich they have become. There's at a slow start, then a huge upsurge but it never seems to level off: each time I listen to _spine_ and _here is a picture_ and now _you do not live in this world alone_ I hear more and am affected by more. This is why Veda is my favourite artist, and shows every sign of staying in that place in my heart for a long time. There's something so rich and human about her hesitancies, her passions, her pains, her angers, her joys, her peace. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #314 **************************
