I didn't really appreciate Mila's performance, I thought there was a lot of affinity variation for me between songs, a couple I liked and most I didn't. I think thats my problem for not 'getting it' rather than Mila's and don't think that it reflects on her performance at all. My daughter for example, thought that Mila was terrific. Both I and my daughter agreed that Rachel Sage was utterly, utterly brilliant. Neither of us 'got' Susan McKeown. And we both really enjoyed Happy's excellent set. She has good vocal control, and sings in a very 'flat' way (little vibrato and arpeggio, if those are the right terms). The music is sort of a mix of pop, country and rock, with a twist. Most songs on this album are (un)love songs. The most dark and choking song would be "i don't think so", and is somewhat of an 'odd one out'. At the other end there is the more uplifting 'sweet time', a sweet waltz. I have a review of it on http://www.rambles.net/rusby_sleepless.html if you're interested. :) I reviewed it a bit ago, so it covers the UK issue, not the recent US release, which features two additional tracks (from a 1998 ep). Short history: Rusby was with Intuition, The Equation, Kathryn Roberts, and The Poozies. (She replaced Sally Barker in the latter group. She has left The Poozies to focus on her solo career, but she's featured on their recent cd, *Infinite Blue*.) Ask me if you want more information. :-) She's a youngster... barely 25. :-) She has a magnificent future ahead of her. Oh, and no, she's not on *Hazy Daze*, the Equation's debut American release (due out Sept. 21st). Her sometime musical partner, Kathryn Roberts, is the lead singer on that album. I heard Equation at the Gavin summit last month and while I prefer their treatments of traditional material, I like what they're doing now. Better yet, what's the album > called? Ecto never fails to amaze me. It is so synchronicitous, and serendipitous; I must believe that the list has its own Spirit. :-) I have been meaning to talk about Kate Rusby for some time, now. I have been listening to her newest release, "Sleepless", for about ten days, now. Believe it or not, I heard mention of her through the Stormcock mailing list for Roy Harper fans. She sounded like something I would like very much, so I ordered the CD. I was not disappointed, and I agree with Meredith, "Our Town" (which I've always dreamed was about Austin) really shines on this release. The format also works very well for listening. The first four songs are all traditional, and trad. arrangements: The Cobbler's Daughter, I Wonder What Is Keeping My True Love This Night, The Fairest of all Yarrow, & The Unquiet Grave. Her talents are tremendously accomplished, without ever seeming arrogant. You can tell immediately that she has a deep respect for English musical traditions, despite her young age. The next three tracks are effortless, and they seem every bit as traditional, and yet they are original compositions. "Sho Heen" a sad lullaby, "Sweet Bride" and a favorite of mine, "All God's Angels", with guest vocals by Tim O'Brien. Next follows the traditional, "The Wild Goose" with guest vocals by Dave Burland, and a upbeat version of "The Duke and the Tinker". After "Our Town" my CD ends with an original song, "The Sleepless Sailor" which fits into the traditions of the other songs perfectly. Guest vocals on that one by Roger Wilson. The last stanza of this song read as follows: Oh rock me so gently now ocean so deep Da da dum, da da dum dee I wish I was back, cause I think I can't sleep Carry me home to the sea I got my copy of "Sleepless" from yalplay, and it is the EU pressing of the disc. I guess I should've bought it at Borders, to get the bonus tracks? /\/\/\/\ Today, I bought Kate Rusby and Kathryn Roberts' 1995 self-titled release, recently reissued by Compass records. I made it through one incredible listen, just now, and I must admit that the last song made me cry. "Exile" it was called, and credited to Steve Knightley, arranged by Kate and Kathryn. The lyrics moved through me in a deep, personal way. The two also sing "The Queen & the Soldier" which is credited to Suzanne Vega. Does anybody know what SV release this song is on? I loved it. :-) The rest are traditional arrangements, and ... well, I'll let the liner notes speak for themselves, since Jon Tams expressed it better than I can: ... Their right to the music is unchallenged---they have worked hard at their craft---they bear it forward with the fortitude of veterans, yet they retain a purity and innocence that by today's popular music standards is uncommonly rare. I *will* get my EWS-plagued hands on Kate Rusby's first solo release, "Hourglass" tomorrow. Looks like I might have to wait for a bit for The Poozies, "Infinite Blue", though ... it's on backorder. :-( Thanks to Mike, Carolyn, and Ellen for more information. I saw that same Genesis tour Fog. It was an amazing show and definitely "a treasured memory of a lifetime". Billi and I really wish we could have made it back east to be a part of the Ectofest event. *Sigh* There is always next time. Maybe somehow we can get something going out here on the left coast. > Met several ectophiles I knew only from this list and sending them Ectopias. > BTW, I introduced myself to Happy and gave her a copy. It must have been really great to meet many fellow Ectophiles face to face. Fog, that was very cool that you gave Happy a copy of Ectopia. I hope that she enjoys the musical contributions of the Ectophile community. > Treasured memory of a lifetime. Thanks to everyone involved, making it > happen, playing it, attending it. I want to thank Meth, Chuck and everyone else that pulled off this obviously beautiful event as well. It has set a precedent for a new tradition that will hopefully live on and blossom from here on out. The best to everyone on the list!
