The first cd is a lot darker. I think something was going on in the both members lives that comes out in the music, something inchoate and never directly spoken of, but undeniably *there*. Oh, I don't think it's as tortured as, say, the first Throwing Muses cd, but there is an disturbing element in the first Lamb cd that keeps me from playing it all the time. But it is undeniably a beautiful piece of work. - --Craig ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 1999 16:25:45 +0200 From: Dirk Kastens Subject: Re: Lamb-Fear of Fours At 09:13 01.09.99 -0400, Craig Gidney wrote: >to it. I just want to share with everybody that I just (yesterday) managed to get Veda Hille's _Spine_, and I have to agree with everybody that is an awe of it. It is such a beautiful cd...it took forever to get through my first listen, because several times I was compelled to restart a track over immediately after it was finished. It is an amazing album. I've been splurging on cds lately, after a few months of managing to keep myself in control. Along with _Spine_ I bought the first Lamb cd, Kristin's _Sky Motel_, Sinead Lohan's _No Mermaid_ and a dozen others. Of course, the worse thing is, the more I buy, the longer my list of cds I NEED grows....but as addictions go, this one is certainly among the most fun and least harmful! Even if my roommates stare at me aghast everytime I splurge (I think in the back of their minds they are saying to themselves "oh god, she keeps this up, one day she's not going to be able to pay rent!) *laugh* But I'm over the moon with happiness at all my glorious new cds. Special thanks to Yngve for mentioning most of them to me in the first place! I also had a question, if anybody familiar with Chicago can help me. I'm going to (finally!) the Tori concert there next weekend, and I was wondering if anybody can let me know of any inexpensive hotels in the area? I'm so excited about it, I have been in love with her music since _Little Earthquakes_ but every time she was even close to me in concert, something would come up so I couldn't go - I'd be out of town that weekend, or out of money, or there'd be an exam...it was a curse! And a curse I'm finally breaking because, even though she doesn't seem to be coming anywhere NEAR Kansas City this tour, I'm heading north. So if anybody has any suggestions for hotels, and any suggestions of good places to find obscure music of the ecto'ish type, I would be forever grateful. I've only driven through/around Chicago, so I don't know it at all. *hugs to everybody* Tracy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 1999 14:15:18 -0400 From: "Heather Russell" Subject: Virginia Ecto/Pagan performance Sunday Hello everyone, Just wanted to let the ectophiles in Virginia know that I will be performing this coming Sunday the 5th at the Fall Gathering of the Tribes in Yorktown Virginia. Hi. s_nevada76@hotmail.com, formerly joann.whetsell@oberlin.edu, is now back at school and joann.whetsell@oberlin.edu Ta-da! Here I am!! One of the nicest things (THE nicest thing?) about being back at school is being able to e-mail in comfort and to read ecto as often as I like. :) I missed this. So, things I've been meaning to post, in no particular order, except random association of brain patterns..... - - If anyone will be recording the upcoming KATELL KEINIG and/or JOY ASKEW concerts in NY, I would LOVE a copy. (and would send a tape/cd/money as appropriate) - -Susan McKeown is FABULOUS live. Those of you attending ectofest are in for quite a treat. By the way, it was really nice to finally meet some 'philes, Paul Blair and John Henshon (sp?). John, if you will e-mail me off-list, I'll give you my address. Thanks again in advance for the cd. - -Victoria Williams I've been meaning to post how delighted I am with this singer. She is so quirky and funny and fun, and so decidedly *different*. She's wonderful. I first got _Swing the Statue_ and couldn't really get into her voice, so I sold it back but kept recordings of the songs "Can't Cry Hard Enough," "Holy Spirit," and "Tarbelly and Featherfoot" which I love. Then I heard .._Creekdipper_ playing in a music store in the Pittsburgh airport, and I really liked it and decided to give her another chance. Well, I love that album and _Loose_ (my favorite, which should have been on my desert island disc list) which I got next. Last spring I got a copy of _Happy Come Home_ but didn't listen to it until a few days ago. Anyway, the point is, I've been meaning to post how much I love this, especially "Frying Pan" which I think is THE happiest song I have EVER heard. It's up there with "Bound By the Beauty" (Jane S) with songs that can put me in a good mood. I also just got, even more recently, _This Moment in Toronto_ which is also great. I actually found it in St. Mark's Place in NYC. Thanks for the suggestion, Meredith, but you should have told me it was cash only. :) I grabbed a pile of cd's, and was only able to afford 3. - -One of them was Rose Polenzani's _Anybody_ which I haven't listened to yet. My copy doesn't have artist info on it, so if somebody could send that to me, I'll finish her page. - -Speaking of Jane Siberry, I was listening to the song "Birds of Passage" the other day and thought that Bel Canto sounded a lot like a technoized Jane Siberry. That's all, folks! About 5 or 6 years ago, I checked out _Swing the Statue_ from the Huntsville Library based on recommendations from Ecto. I put the CD in the CD player, hit play, and 30 seconds later was scrambling for the stop button. Her voice was just killing me. Fast forward to about a year ago. I had suffered through many more Victoria recommendations on Ecto, and was really starting to feel guilty for not giving her much of a chance. So when I saw _Musings of a Creekdipper_ used, I hesitantly bought it. I put the CD in the CD player, hit play, and absolutely loved it. "Wow, her voice has really gotten better over the years," I thought. Of course I later found out that I was wrong. Her voice hasn't changed--I have. _Creekdipper_ ended up being my favorite album from 1998 (unless I'm forgetting some...I never get around to making top ten lists) and was a great soundtrack for a trip to the Smokey Mountains. I saw her in concert in Atlanta last year (during which I became certain that the phrase "She's a hoot!" was coined for her). And I have all of her albums except for _Happy Come Home_. I even adore _Swing the Statue_ now. Makes me want to go back 5 years and give myself a smack in the head. > Last spring I got a copy of _Happy Come Home_ but didn't listen to it > until a few days ago. And I agree about BbtB ("The Life is the Red Wagon" also does it for me). > -Speaking of Jane Siberry, I was listening to the song "Birds of Passage" > the other day and thought that Bel Canto sounded a lot like a technoized > Jane Siberry. Actually, if I read just this paragraph, I would have sworn you were talking about Lisa Germano, as this is the reaction so many have had, particularly to _Geek the Girl_. I happened to listen to _Fear of Fours_ at the office again today, and was struck by how much of it is about Lou's pregancy and baby. The first song of Vic's I heard was, er, either "Shoes" or "Vieux Amis" and I was convinced that my tape deck was broken until I realized that the music sounded fine, it was just that _voice_! But it's so wonderful, and so wonderfully expressive, and she writes such great music. > Anyway, the point is, I've been meaning to post how much I love this, > especially "Frying Pan" which I think is THE happiest song I have EVER > heard. For a completely different take on it, lisen to Evan Dando's cover on the _Sweet Relief_ compilation. It's a quiet, somber folk song that's just utterly gorgeous; honestly, I heavily prefer it to Victoria's original. But I love 'em both. I LOVE these songs. Yes, they are very happy. I was thinking of making a tape of happy songs for the car, but after "Frying Pan" and "Bound By the Beauty" I couldn't think of any others. I'm sure you guys here could think of millions. Good night. They didn't marry each other, though... but I don't know, the thing about the first album... "Zero" is I think the only really lyrically-dark song on the album, and they offset it from the rest of the songs by arranging it for strings alone, and leaving the samplers in the refrigerator... but all of the other lyrics are very much just kind of different pop, Lou is singing about love in all of the songs, and optimistically, as well... even "Trans Fatty Acid", with its shrieking factory noises, is like, "our love is strong enough to weather the rain to weather the snow to weather the storm", and "Feela" is just kind of rueful, not dark... "this could have been something this could have been really something", it's not too deathly... the beats are, certainly... well, not in "Feela", there are no beats in that song to speak of... but anyhow... I don't know, dark music doesn't make the whole shebang a big wad of darkness... but this new album... I love it, it's like they just figured out how to streamline the whole process, and Lou just started singing in a somewhat happier way... but the lyrical content hasn't changed as such, it's just grown a bit, now her conceits are bit more pronounced, the lyrics end up fitting the songs specifically much more, rather than just being similar rhythm-wise... I think there's a big difference between the musical contents of the album as far as style goes... their jazz side really is much more prominent on some songs here (for those of y'all who are compulsive single-collectors, one of the "b side" singles has a completely amazing different version of the song, it's called the "Lounge mix", though Lou recorded a new vocal for it and everything, it's the version I think they sould have been put on the album, personally), and a lot of artists seem to do this... on their first albums early in their career, they have a style that is all their own, they do things "their way" (Tori and various other Ectofolk especially), something that is advanced musically, but not any specific style, and then as they mature, they start mining older forms, they turn to things like jazz and blues and older-school rock ("Little Amsterdam", "Long Snake Moan", "Angel Food")... it's the whole "well, their style is difficult to describe", because there really isn't a specific style, they're not blues or jazz or drum'n'bass or any of that specific stuff... they're just making the music they make, it comes out of their personal little filters however it comes out... but the new Lamb album draws much more noticeably (and I'd say more successfully) from jazz and (though I'm loathe to use this term) contemporary classical a la "bonfire" and "lullaby"... I think their use of Caribbean rhythms and percussion in "here" is brilliant brilliant brilliant... I think the albums are different enough that I can't compare them, and though I'll admit I really did want another "Lamb", they've moved in a much stronger direction... I think if they tried to just write "Gorecki" all over again, it'd have been a disaster... instead, they wrote "five" and "alien" and "b line", and it's all amazing and it works. I love it. I haven't listened to the first album since I got the new one, I'm not sure why... I've just been loving "Fear of Fours" way too much to go back down that road yet... I'm sure it'll sound much different too, after having been cast in the light of the new album.
