Maybe we could arrange something like the old tape project and create a database on the ecto homepage with all the compilation CDs that ectophiles offer. Hmm--it's not exactly that they're waiving their right, rather closing their eyes to/ignoring this violation of their rights. They'd be foolish to in any way officially waive their rights to have songs used in compilations as then they would have little legal ground to stand on should a company use their work in a compilation without arrangements and compensation. In other words, tape/cd trading _is_ against copyright law--copyright actually has nothing to do with making money or privacy/public issues. Just the enforcement of it is--no one is likely to bother to sue over something where money doesn't exchange hands and is private. At least that's my understanding of the issues involved, and I've looked into this quite a bit regarding my own writing and other's writing--music falls under the same copyright law. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 15:03:28 -0400 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: Re: Personal sampler CD exchange Neile clarifies: > Hmm--it's not exactly that they're waiving their right, rather closing > their eyes to/ignoring this violation of their rights. Right, that's what I meant. It's up to the artists to take action or not; you won't get police banging on your door of their own initiative. There's clearly a spectrum of these things: at one end, making a mix tape for one friend is almost certainly not going to offend anybody; at the other end, putting an MP3 of an artist's song on a web site without their permission is pretty likely to get you a threatening letter from their lawyer, or worse. A web page offering "compilations" seems closer to the latter than the former, to me. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 16:06:39 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: paul away I will be going home to Maryland today and will be there until ectofest this Saturday. Well the caveat there is that if you convert from MP3 back to WAV, the WAV won't sound any better than the MP3 did. Absolutely true, but to be honest, this is one of the best-sounding boots I've ever heard. It was a solo-acoustic show at a small venue (McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica). The mp3s were 128/44.1 and the resulting audio CD sounds better than some studio albums I have. jeff - -- |Jeffrey C. I've been listening to _Lamb_ quite a lot ever since Neile wore me down with her constant endorsements, and now that _Fear of Fours_ is out I still prefer to listen to _Lamb_. A few photos at http://home.att.net/~eatthemusic/ky/photos.html But the real surprise of the evening also answered a question that had me a bit concerned for the past month - why Galaxia (who, along with Collaborateur, did a fantastic series of triple-bills with Kristeen before she left) hadn't been playing out lately. The answer is that their bass player, Brian Ion, also moved to the northeast to seek fame and fortune. ;) So after more than 2 years without a bass player for the live shows, he takes the place of Chris Sauer who left the band in July of '97 having played with Kristeen dating clear back to her Nov. 9th days. Best wishes to Brian, though I'm wondering what will become of Galaxia without him.
