Check out http://www.bryndle.com/site/ww-best.html I had actually lost all hope that her music would ever be on CD, so it was a very pleasant surprise to stumble onto that CD one day. It's a really nice transfer, by the way, really clean, and clocks in at a generous 70:37! Finally, to be able to hear fine songs like "Western Lullaby," "Love Has Got Me," "Cold Back on Me," "Wild Bird," "Living is Good," without pops and clicks. My only "disappointment," though a minor one, was that she for some reason felt compelled to rere- cord the classic "Mad Mad Me" for this CD. While it's as pretty as the original, I wanted the origina1! :( Oh well. A glinter of hope for her catalog to be released on CD is in this answer at http://www.bryndle.com/site/ww-inter.html > 3. I'd be very surprised if this ever happens, perhaps only as expensive Japanese imports or something. Wendy still performs once in a while, and was last in a band with Karla called Bryndle. I have the _Bryndle_ CD from 1995: it is a treat. Their website, http://www.bryndle.com just announced that a 'best of' CD for Karla will be released September 7th! :-) For- tunately, Karla's catalog is (thank god) on CD, if you can find them. The Bryndle website has current news on Wendy and Karla: there is actually talk of a new Wendy CD! http://www.bryndle.com/site/sounds.html has a few snippets of recent performances, one from Wendy from 3/99, and some of the Bryndle album. I'd love to see Wendy and Karla included in the 'Guide! Especially Karla Bonoff-she has a beautiful, heavenly voice, is a fantastic singer/songwriter, and her catalog deserves to be heard by everyone in the world. "Some of her songs," as noted on a sticker on her first solo LP, _Karla Bonoff_, "have the timeless feel of classics." An understatement if I've ever read one, but nice to read nonetheless, because it certainty is so true. I've had this album for a while. Joydrop are a Canadian group, and the disc was released there before it appeared here in the States. Here's what I said about them in February shortly after I got the disc. I can't really add to this, other than perhaps to say that the band I'd compare them to most is Garbage, but with some softer material. I am really sick of the "Beautiful" song already, though! joydrop's >metasexual will be of interest to those here who like very rock sounds, though there are some softer tunes on it. There's one really loud tune that actually at first put me off them (it can take me a lo-o-o-o-ong time to break through the wall of sound thing, particularly as I rarely have time to do nothing but listen to music, and while I'm doing something else loud music I'm not familiar with can get on my nerves) but anyway, I started really liking the rest of the album. Not sure who I'd compare them too or how I'd categorize. Can anyone else help here? - --Neile n.p. But while I at >first thought it was better than their debut, I now realize the >first one is still my favorite. Thanks for agreeing with me! I thought I was crazy as I went through this exact process. And the weird feeling thing is that I do really like _Fear of Fours_, so it's not that it's a disappointment. It just doesn't inspire that "I could listen to it forever" feeling the first one still does, so if this is a "sophomore slump" well, it confirms that lamb is one of my favourite bands. re: Baxter, _Baxter_ >I love the promo too and was wondering what the album is like. What >songs on the promo are most representative of the rest of the >album? Tough question. I guess I would say that the other songs are very like the sampler--that kind of range (which actually isn't that wide). There's nothing that's as obviously single material as "Television" but I like all of the songs and on many listenings haven't been tempted to skip any of them. I would definitely say that if you like the sampler you'll like the rest of the songs. I was happy to trade up for the whole disc, and think it was worth it. Very pleasant listening, and I don't mean to damn it with faint praise by that. I really like this. Jim says it's very like Massive Attack's _Mezzanine_. I don't disagree but that doesn't click so clearly for me. In other news, I have the new Sarah Slean. I'm going to have to let this sink in a little more. I don't find it as instantly engaging as _Universe_ was for me, but I think it's just as good, just more subtle. At first I found the use of strings and othe production, especially in the early tracks on the album, a little too sweet and pretty for my tastes, but it's all growing on me. And as Steve Ito said, this is an unusual album in that it seems to get stronger later in the disc--the later tracks are quite brilliant. And I especially like the last postscript track. I wish she didn't make us wait so long for it! She seems to be more and more clearly different from Tori with this release--more into her own sound and thought processes, which I think it ultimately rewarding for me as a listener, it's just going to take a while for the alum to come into focus. I'm looking forward to the process. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 12:58:30 -0700 (PDT) From: hooligan Subject: Re: New Lori Carson? 28 September. I like it quite a lot, or at least I did before I left it and 15 other CDs in the back set of a cab a few months back. :-( Anyway "Beautiful" was really popular in Canada a year ago. Actually some of you may have seen Joydrop's singer Tara Slone before... she's had a recurring role as "Gail" on the show "La Femme Nikita". Emm is a terrific songwriter and performer and an incredibly cool person too. There's a new tour diary up at http://www.emmgryner.com/emmtourdiaries.htm It uses RealAudio 5.0, which apparently Andrew is not a big fan of. Which is ironic because he was the one who taught me about using RealAudio to begin with 2 years ago. :-) He didn't like streaming then either. Actually I'm not a big fan of RealAudio anymore either but I think it's still more prevalent than MP3. Actually these tour diaries are just recordings of Emm's messages on my voice mail so audio quality isn't that important anyway. Yikes, I'm babbling, and I need to run! Seeya folks! Well, back then there weren't many alternatives to RealAudio... As for streaming, my connection was flaky then and for all the improvements it's still lagging behind the demand. I'm limited to a 56k modem, and I don't see this changing any time soon because while in the States the cost of broadband connections seems to fall all the time, this process is much, much slower down here. In fact, I'd say we're falling behind in technology stakes. And with recent developments like the shameful censorship bill passed by our senate Australia is fast backtracking into the dark ages. But that's another story... >Apparently my constant haranguing has chased at least one person right off >ecto... Well, I for one appreciate it greatly. I know there's no way I'd ever find out about Sarah Slean, or many other artists like her, if it wasn't for Ecto. So Steve, don't feel bad, and don't stop! I've been keeping my modem hot downloading megabytes of songs over this weekend: first of all, Shelleyz Raven who were recommended by Yngve a few days back - somewhat similar to Rose Chronicles perhaps? And, on mp3.com I found Silverscene, pretty good pop-rock ectoish band (on the crunchier end of the Ectospectrum). Think back to Letters to Cleo, or Velocity Girl - and if you liked either of these, you might also like Silverscene. Then there is Second Story, also recommended here recently (sorry, I don't remember by whom, by thanks to whoever it was). Sadly they seem to prefer RealAudio - but at least they provide non-streaming samples as well. And on that note I seem to come back to the beginning of this message and I'm clearly running out of things to say. One more thing: I just put my order for Sarah Slean - finally there is a way of ordering her stuff with a credit card over the net! - ------------------------------------------------------ 62,400 repetitions make one truth. - Aldous Huxley - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #290 **************************
