There are a few shareware CD player applications (and maybe even CD cataloguing applications) out there that generate Web pages of their CD database. When I first looked into it, none of the applications generated HTML pages that were of my liking, hence I developed my own. But things by now may have improved; and also your taste may be different than mine. World Music is a nonprofit that puts on a wonderful series of concerts all year around, divided into spring, summer, fall. Their fall schedule just got announced a few weeks ago. So, my catalogue builds up as I play more and more of my discs (and I do welcome having to play them all at least once over time). - - Bill. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 17:16:35 -0400 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: Re: cataloguing CDs This is a dangerous topic to get me started on, but while I like CDDB for players (I use CDValet), I refuse to put up with the inevitable sloppiness that comes from taking data that thousands of strangers have entered. I also have lots of vinyl, which I want in the same database. Plus, I'm obsessive, and want things exactly the way I want them. And I work in software. So my record-collection database has gone through lots of formats over the years, starting as a text file back when I didn't have any better tools, then turning into a spreadsheet when I went to work for Lotus, then a Paradox database when I left Lotus, and these days an Access database. In the process I've stripped the schema down to the following essential fields: - - artist (in alphabetization-friendly format, e.g. "Reader, Eddi") - - title (including "CD1" or "CD2" for two-part CD-singles, and "remaster"/"reissue " where appropriate) - - year - - format (7", 10", 12", EP, LP, CD5, CD, cassette, flexi) - - no. of disks - - type (studio, live, collection, omnibus) - - no. of tracks - - total length - - label(s) - - producer(s) - - entry date - - replacement/replaced/na Actually, although it's overkill in any realistic sense, it's really a relational database, with these other two tables, although they're only there for reporting purposes: Artist table - - artist (link to the main table) - - display name (e.g. "Eddi Reader") - - logical name (e.g. "Eddi Reader / Fairground Attraction", for when there are several names for what I think of as one artist) Format table - - format (link to main table) - - type (vinyl, disc, tape) I also wrote a fairly simple VBA script (simple if you happen to be a VB programmer, anyway) to generate text files with a subset of this info (just artist, title, year and format), which I sync to my Casio palm-PC, so I can carry the most important data with me when I go record shopping. Now you're sorry you asked. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 14:16:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Bill Subject: RE: cataloguing CDs On Mon, 23 Aug 1999, Michael Bowman wrote: > I have a question for people using products like this: do you get > anything other than artist, title and song titles? My CD player application, Quintessential CD, retrieves from CDDB the album's title, the artist's name (as in the band's name), the track titles, and "extended" information. Track times are calculated locally from the disc's track frame offsets. And, by the way, the "key" used to query the CDDB is also derived from the disc's frame offsets, so two discs will only produce the same key only if they have the same track information. Also, when multiple entries in the CDDB database have the same query key, the CD player (or CD cataloguing) application will normally give the user (that's you) the choice to pick out the correct CD. The "extended" information is any free-form text that was entered by the user who created the CDDB entry for that CD. I have seen song lyrics, musicians' names, record label information, cataloguing information such as the disc's UPC code, and even silly personal comments on the CD's work. I myself have taken the time now and then to enter the musicians' names and instruments they played on each track (if that information came with the CD sleeve), or even song lyrics for a particularly nice song. Once I even entered ordering information for that artist, since the CD sleeve did a nice job about including such information. - - Bill G. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 17:23:56 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: World Music, Boston (was Re: Natalie MacMaster) At 04:17 PM 8/23/99 -0400, Ofer Inbar wrote: >> If only someone on ecto went to Berklee. ;) > >The Berklee Performance Center is just another theater, you don't need >any affiliation with Berklee. Actually, my comment was more of a hint to Paul. :) Since I only plan to attend this one concert (none of the rest of their schedule appeals to me enough to get me to Boston), and don't intend to get a World Music membership, my choices were Ticketmaster (ptui!), going to Boston myself or finding someone in Boston to help me... and Paul seemed like the obvious choice. So I suppose it's a good thing he has since graciously offered to help me out. :) Mike np: Sleater-Kinney -- The Hot Rock ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 14:33:49 -0700 (PDT) From: Bill Subject: RE: cataloguing CDs P.S.: I too am a software developer by profession, and many times through the years I have embarked on a home project to develop a CD cataloguing tool, whether it be an all-home-grown tool (using a general-purpose programming language), or an end-user tool built over an off-the-shelf product, such as Microsoft Access. But, the one thing that always stopped me dead on my tracks and persuaded me to abandon the project was the prospect of having to enter a few hundred CDs (or a few thousand for some of you) worth of data into my new catalogue. Even if I only entered a CD's data at the time that I played the CD, that still seemed to be a major drag. So, as you all think about a tool for cataloguing your discs, I say get something that will work with a CD player application, so as you play discs your CD app will do the dirty work of populating your database for you. And before you know it, you will have a growing CD catalogue without the nasty data-entry job. - - Bill. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 15:05:14 -0700 From: Ken Blake Subject: Re: cataloguing CDs Michael, What you have to realize is that CD's only contain music, they have no identifying info at all. It always amazes me that the designers of the CD format didn't think to spare say 1K worth of space (~ 0.001 secs of audio data) for artist, title, track listings, label, etc. So the way the CDDB identifies CD's is with a number distilled from start time of each track (not a precise description). It often turns out that each pressing will have a different identifying number. This would be a major annoyance except that somehow CDDB manages to guess the correct CD (this has happened to me many times and it was always right). It would be extremely unlikely that releases from different countries would get the same number. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if CDDB failed to guess that they are the same in this case. In the situation you mention it's entirely possible that people have entered both, or told CDDB that they are the same. Note also, CDDB only contains what people have sent it which is mostly artist, title, track listing. However there is room for extra info but I haven't seen it used very often. So far I've only found one CD of mine that wasn't in CDDB - Happy Rhode's HR5. It should have it now. The folks at Fez will be able to give you the lowdown. Alas I can't go -- we've had tickets to the Red Sox games this weekend since before the season started. :P Oh well. From Penn Station, you'll want to get the subway across town. I'd recommend taking the N/R down to the L at 14th St. Take the L over to the Union Square station, then jump on the 6 downtown. Fez is just north of the Bleecker St. station. To get to the Sidewalk, you'll switch to the F at Bleecker St. then go 1 stop to 2nd. Ave. You can walk over to the Sidewalk Cafe from there - it's on Ave. A at 6th St. (If any City denizens would like to correct me, please do -- I usually just get downtown from Grand Central, which is a lot more straightforward.) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | ectofest '99: sat. sept. 4, 1999 kenosia park, danbury, ct | | http://www.ectofest.org | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 22:47:10 -0400 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Many concerts (was Re: Natalie MacMaster (was Re: CD lengths)) At 7:59 PM -0400 8/23/99, Michael Curry wrote: > I'd probably agree about Aoife Clancy's voice, though I don't think >I dislike it as much as you did. I liked Joanie's endless banter, and how it seemed to kind of annoy the rest of the band, and Mary's sly smiles and occasional jabbing asides. They haven't released an album with the new singer yet, have they? neal now shuffling over: Tidy... - Kinnie Starr whitechocolatespaceegg - liz phair Cry Cry Cry Bachelor No. 2 (or the last remains of the dodo) - Aimee Mann The Day The World Went Away - NIN ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 23:00:55 -0400 From: neal copperman Subject: ectofest lodging I'm about to make a room reservation for ectofest, and was wondering if there are any ectophiles out there who might be game for sharing a room. I hope to be at the Ethan Allen, since the other people in my car are staying there. However, if you snore "like a cuisinart full of gravel", or have a high tolerance for that sort of thing, you should contact Joe Zitt (jzitt@metatronpress.com), who is also looking for a roommate. neal ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 21:08:19 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Request for coffeehouse suggesttions This came in address to the Ectophiles' Guide address.
