As you can tell, most of these I got to know through the popular bands A-ha and Roxette, though it was Marion pointing me towards Garmarna. I am absolutely _addicted_ to Vedergallningen now, and Morten's "Vogts Villa" is the best work since A-ha's "East of the sun west of the moon" album. Now, is there any more where this came from? I'm looking for some Swedish, perhaps Norwegian stuff (I like the language although I can't understand what they're on about...) in a slightly poppy vein. Eva Dahlgren, Lena Philipsson and Lisa Nilsson are three of the most popular ones. You may want to try buying a compilation CD to sample the music of several different artists. I found a list of Swedish compilations on the web at http://w1.311.telia.com/~u31103034/catd.html I'm not sure whether or not all of these are still in print; for instance, they list an excellent 2 CD set called "Svenska Flickor" (Swedish Girls) - -- my dad has this and it's a great introduction to most of the top Swedish female singers past and present -- but skivhugget.se doesn't list it in its database. Not sure if it's available elsewhere, but it might be worth keeping an eye out for. I agree that Marie Fredriksson's solo CDs are wonderful. I particularly recommend "Efter Stormen" (After the Storm). It's a lot darker and more contemplative than her music with Roxette. Even if you don't understand the lyrics, I think that feeling comes through anyway... :) - --Sue Trowbridge * albany, california trow@slip.net * www.interbridge.com np: Richard Thompson on Fresh Air ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 19:15:07 +0200 (CEST) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: Re: Swedish Ecto > Hi, > > I've been listening to a lot of scandinavian music lately, courtesy of > www.skivhugget.se and www.akersmic.no , through which I could order > Morten Harket, Savoy, Garmarna and some Marie Fredriksson. > As you can tell, most of these I got to know through the popular bands > A-ha and Roxette, though it was Marion pointing me towards Garmarna. If you have a chance to see them live then do so, cause I've yet to see anyone top them.) Sissel Endresen (Jazz - if you like that) Mari Boine (She is great - really great!!) Lene Marlin (the new amazing artist ... you might even know her already 18 years old and writing some wonderful songs) Radka Toneff (One of the most talented Jazz artists Norway has ever had. So sad she died so early :( ) Cane (if you can find them - they broke up cause of Warner Norway not being able to get their finger out. I think with the Indigo Girls, this is a natural growth from last year's Suffragette Sessions, or whatever it was called, that featured a whole smorgasbord of styles. >My sister says Paula needs to dump the black boyfriend and go back to her >white roots. I'll repost what Jess Weiser wrote a couple days ago : I've heard a little rumor that she's now going as the "Paula Cole Band" and also that this album she's playing with her style, delving a bit more into her r&b influences... not sure how much of this is true, but... there's a form for updates on the new album on her site (paulacole.com), though I've yet to receive any info from it. and I'll add my own little bit. I've managed to see some footage of Paula Cole in concert here during her Berklee College days, and what struck me the most was her jazz and r&b singing. I saw clips of her at what's called Singer Showcase, which has vocalist students trying out for a spot in this fairly prestigious concert, and in general, they can pick whatever song they want to perform, and Paula did a rather r&b vocal-inflected jazz tune on one of the clips. She had some real soul coursing through her. I guess this is coming around on the new album. What really surprised me about jill's posting of the ice preview was the way it seemed like the album would be all over the place what with DJ Premier, T-Boz, and a 62 piece orchestra involved. It almost sounds like the disease of "richer equals bigger which must be better" that seems to pervade everything. And the titling of the album as _Amen_ and some of the songs puts the fear of Jewel in me. But i'm not really that interested since I've been kinda "eh" about paula since the Vancouver Lilith Fair in '97. And what's up with there only being 9 tracks on the cd?! At the least, pop records are supposed to have 10 cuts on them. It's the way most major label record deals and songwriting deals and all other sorts of deals are structured - to favor 10 songs on an album. Those 9 songs had better be really amazing and be longer than 5 minutes, or else the consumer is gonna be gypped. Rant rant rant.
