What does one have to do to get Happy Rhodes to do a few concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area? Judging from the scarcity of her recordings, I am left with the impression that she has retired! Is this the case? I have met a few fans of her music out here, so she is not altogether unknown. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Aug 1999 21:54:44 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Happy in California? I suppose that to get her to play the West Coast, all one would have to do would be to make it affordable for her to do so. I'm not sure whether Samson funded her small MWABT tour last year, or whether she did so herself. I don't know that she's particularly adverse to traveling... n.p. John Cage: Empty Words, etc. n.r. While I certainly don't speak for Happy, I don't think Joe's comments reflect what we have seen over the years. My impression (based solely on comments I've seen posted here) is that Happy wants some corporate entity to be willing to put together a tour for her. She does not want her fans to work something out. So it is not clear that making the trip affordable for her is sufficient for having her perfrom. If this is in fact true, then the best avenue to see Happy perform out west might be to try to convince Samson that it would be a lucrative thing to sponsor. I don't know of other ways to get some corporation to organize a tour. The idea of a Borders tour has been bandied about, but it's not clear to me that Borders is willing to put the energy behind something like that outside of a local region. I suspect it would be easy for Happy to organize a Border's tour up and down the east coast corridor (where she plays anyway). There hasn't seemed to have been much enthusiasm for this idea outside of ecto either. neal np: Thanks for the Ether - Rasputina nr: The Hours - Michael Cunningham ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 01:50:56 EDT From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: milla I finally listened to _The Divine Comedy_ today. I've had it for a few weeks now from my Harmony Ridge order. First I must say that I was especially happy to hear the mandolin on the album and to see all the pictures of the mandolin. That made me smile. Secondly, I remember when Milla won the modeling contest of Teen or Seventeen, or one of those magazines, and was on the cover and had a special article, and I thought she was SOO beautiful. I never forgot her face. (Or Kathy Ireland on the cover of Sports Illustrated, but that's another story) And now, for musical content. It's a good album! I let it play several times. I really like "Gentlemen Who Fell" and "Ruby Lane". It has this quality about it that's familiar, but different. It's hard to be analytical at nearly 2 in the morning. Anyway, thanks for discussing and thanks for recommending. How is the new album (that is not the second album)different?
