Thanks! Yeah, the Tibetan monks were a big influence on it... BTW, you might get a kick out of one of the tracks from "Shekhinah: The Presence", "Bor'chu. First of all, welcome to all the new people out there that are starting to pipe up. Good to hear from you. (Eric--I traded with you fairly recently. Like last week or something like that.) Some semi-new album release info, if you haven't heard it yet. The Indigo Girls are due for their next one out in the fall. So are the wonderfully insane Firesign Theatre--they were nominated for a Grammy last year for best comedy (lost to Mel Brooks's recording). If you're into wacky sketch comedy in a stream of consciousness vein, do check them out. I do so love independent artists. I did a little review of Erin McKeown's tape "Monday Morning Cold" on my Cd Reviews page. Mentioned this to her webmaster back at school. Her webmaster linked to my review! On top of that, I just got an email this morning from Erin herself looking to discuss certain points I brought up in the review. Having fun with a little HTML...dum de doo... Neal--have you tried looking into feng shui a bit? It does help so much in the arrangement of furniture. :) The webring grew by another member recently--I believe we're up to 23 pages. Any newcomers or oldtimers who have webpages are welcome to join. (And a welcome and thank you to Klaus for joining!) The CD Store list is growing less swiftly, but it's still up there. I've added a few more places in the Chicago area, and again, newcomers are welcome to give their input. Still loving Ectopia!!! I had heard one of Cyoakha's contributions before, but it's great to hear what some of you other folks are doing. I'll have to start making some more music investments as soon as I get a new job. Lastly, a call out to all Chicago ectophiles--it's a bit early, but from what I've gathered, there's gonna be a Happy appearance with Project Lo at Martyr's on Nov. 11. Might this be cause for another mini-gathering? At any rate, off to bed now. - --Kay Ecto Webring: www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Gala/8060/Webring.html Ecto CD Store Directory: www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Gala/8060/Music/Ectostores.html np: Innocence Mission, Various Demos :) nr: David Eddings, Polgara the Sorceress (again...) ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. In fact, listening to your sample of the title track, _Stars to Share_, I can clearly hear her very distinct and melodious voice. But I see no credit for her peformance? Could it be perhaps because she is not among the "Windham Hill Gallery of Stars?" While you impressivly list three longtime WH names as performing; you dismiss someone that is prominently featured in the title track. I am afraid, that until this oversight on your part is corrected, I will have to live with only the samples of these songs, as I cannot purchase an album which overlooks an independent artist so blatanly. I'm sure that if one of the "major" record labels was to do such a thing to a WH performer, you'd feel the same way. (select Bliss2) No doubt its available clearer somewhere but one has to know people who know. Sorry if there has been a similar post, I'm on the digest and won't find that out until tomorrow night! I love Choirgirl but my immediate thoughts on this were 'urg, she mentions a monkey in the second line, next she'll be rambling on about popes and rubber robes...' and 'verse chorus verse.' However the noises and beat require better sound quality to have full effect, and it may be a catchy radio song. Has anyone read anything hinting that Tori doesn't think of this as a proper album? I haven't, but I'm thinking of it as a collection of quickly written songs accompaning the live album. The good thing about cultivating low expectations for me is that gems are then a surprise and the more precious for it. karen. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 10:41:08 EDT From: Maeve421@aol.com Subject: y kant tori read Well... if any of you would like a copy, I just received a burned copy of Y Kant Tori Read. I'm starting on a shoot of a short film in Super-8 and have only been able to afford to exchange words for music. However, I've been raiding the bargain bins and getting review copies of things, and have built up my music collection by piecemeal over the past few months. Here are some releases I really liked lately. Kristin Hersh, _Sky Motel_. Wow. I've been waiting for this for a long time, as a fairly recent (within the past two years) KH/TM fan who was slightly disappointed with _Strange Angels_. After hearing a record that sounded like a collection of demos, outtakes, B-sides, and rarities, it was grrrreat to hear something that sounded like an album through and through. Unlike some of the people on this list, I don't think SM sounds much like the Muses (with the exception of "Cathedral Heat", which is the only song KH "wrote" in the style of the older Muses tunes) -- the album sounds more song-based than most of her previous work, like she was trying to take what she learned from her two acoustic records and apply that to a band atmosphere. It also seems to be a much more balanced work, musically and lyrically -- the production is painted in bright, colorful brushstrokes (as opposed to the meticulous shading of her previous recorded output), and there are ebuillent-sounding tunes like "Echo" and "Spring" nestled with dark, glistening gems like "Faith" and "San Francisco". Right now, SM is locked in a dead heat for Album of the Year with... Tom Waits, _Mule Variations_. Okay, I might well be the only person on this list who not only likes but LOVES Tom Waits's singing voice -- a phlegmy-sounding, gravel-bottomed croak swayed by years of alcohol, smoking, singing in bars and all-around hard-living. His voice reminds me of my dad, a hardcore Lucky Strikes fan who passed on a few years ago, and who was also a big Waits fan. Listening to this record reminds me a great deal of my dad, and not only for personal and utterly superficial reasons - -- the whole thing is about death, and trying to make peace with the hereafter ("Take IT With Me" and the rousing, gospel-influenced "Come On Up To The House"), but also feeling some rage at early absences (the should-be-a-standard "Hold On" and the graceful, hymn-like "Georgia Lee"). The album makes some interesting contrasts btwn traditional songcraft and experimental production, splitting the difference btwn _The Heart of Saturday Night_ and _Bone Machine_ to create an album close in spirit to my favourite Waits album, _Swordfishtrombones_. Petra Haden and Miss Murgatroid, _Bella Neurox_/Petra Haden, _imaginaryland_. I got BN on the basis of a review in _Bitch_ magazine, in which the album was compared to soundtracks for Eastern European silent movies; and, indeed, when I listen to this it's all I can do NOT to imagine Louise Brooks gliding through a strange movie, dressed as a flapper but with an unflappable sense of the situation and a graceful presence. It's not as new agey as I thought, but is gorgeous and traditional -- fans of John Lurie's _String Quartets for Film_ should appreciate this one. After being thoroughly blown away by that, I took a risk on a cheap copy of _Imaginaryland_. At the risk of sounding cruel, it was worth the dollar I spent on it. I had hoped Petra would grace her album with a few more viola tunes. While her multi-tracked vocal instrumentals aren't bad, they tend to blend together. Poster Children, _Flower pLower_ and _Junior Citizen_ -- A friend of mine put a track from one of their other albums on a mix tape for me, and I was so enthused by the energetic spirit and droney guitars that I just had to look into their other work. I ended up finding FpL for 50c at Strawberries Underground, and it was quite a bit different from the polished sound of "Dream Small" -- their first album is crunchy pop punk, rendered in clean lines and simple production. Their later album comes closer to the description a friend of mine gave me ("Galaxie 500 as fronted by D. Boon of the Minutemen!"), buffed to a high-wax shoegazer sheen but not without punchy melodies, or a good sense of humour and heaps of idealism. I also got the chance to see the Music Tapes the other night, which was pretty nifty. I don't have much more room to go into it, but if you're into Neutral Milk Hotel and like theatrical live shows, you'd be wise to check them out. Later! - -- "But I guess that's my kind of sweetness -- my heart is a violent one, but I mean well." -- Kristin Hersh, on "Cathedral Heat" *~*~* chelsea the mod pixie*tugboat@channel1.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 11:15:21 EDT From: Maeve421@aol.com Subject: Tori still Kant Read Listening to the cd further (I received it from a friend), it is not all Y Kant Tori Read. I just like the general idea of feng shui, I think cause there is probably something to it, though it sounds kind of nonsensical at the same time. I figure if I brought any one in to look at my stuff, I'd get two primary responses 1. How old is this furniture anyway? Maybe you should buy something new one of these years. 2. Why not move your computer and/or stereo into the den, rather than squeezing them both into the living room. (I think, in ectoland at least, this would be the first rule of interior decorating.) I know my opinion is going to piss off someone on Ecto, but it's JUST MY OPINION that she gives me a rash. >Too funny that I just mentioned that review yesterday. That was one of the things that inspired me to whip that out, actually. Because of my yen for filmmaking and love of music, I've become more and more drawn to instrumentals, because in some ways it's easier to create evocative films with an instrumental soundtrack. When you're making a little movie to a song with lyrics, you run the risk of turning it into a music video. Then again, there's an amazing short film by some German director (Eric somebody?) that uses Sarah Vaughan's _In My Life_, and I saw an awful student film by some kid who used a good Thelonious Monk song. And my short is being edited to a pop song. But still, it can be easier to shoot to instrumentals in some cases, when it's as evocative as Petra and Miss Murgatroid's work. >What's the lowdown on the Lurie album? I got it mostly because it had music from the two Jarmusch films he scored, _Stranger Than Paradise_ and _Down by Law_. (Actually, the friend that got it for me snapped it up because it had a picture of Lurie as Bela Monar from StP and said, "Damn, this has Chelsea written all over it!") From my woefully minimal experience with Lurie and the 'Lizards, I think it's quite a bit different than his work with a full band -- it's more subtle and evocative, and less "showy". The Lounge Lizards music can be pretty distracting, where the quartets are beautiful, restless musical sculptures. Now, for extra bonus points...can someone tell me the name of the song Lurie played to close his set on _Sessions at West 54th_? I think the title had the word "girl" or "woman" in it, and it was a smokin' little jazz number. I think that's the next thing I'm going to get, after I finish shooting my film. - --Chelsea, the most hated girl on ecto? - -- "But I guess that's my kind of sweetness -- my heart is a violent one, but I mean well." -- Kristin Hersh, on "Cathedral Heat" *~*~* chelsea the mod pixie*tugboat@channel1.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 19:39:53 -0700 (PDT) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: Re: songs about songwriters On Sun, 1 Aug 1999, neal copperman wrote: > At 10:08 AM -0700 8/1/99, Sue Trowbridge wrote: > >np: the hum of the dehumidifier > > Ok, so how humid can it really be in San Francisco??? :) (Come visit Sue, > I think you've been away from Baltimore too long!) I'm sure it's not the least bit humid in San Francisco, but it's plenty humid in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is where I am now. :) BTW, did anyone attend an Aimee Mann show on her recent mini-tour, and if so, was she selling those "tour-only" CDs? I just read an account written by someone who saw her Ann Arbor gig and she had no CDs for sale there. Apparently her tour van was hit by a drunken driver on the way to the show and rolled over 3 times (!) so it's very, very fortunate that she made it there in one piece. - --Sue Trowbridge * albany, california trow@slip.net * www.interbridge.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Aug 1999 22:59:32 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: kristin hersh _sky motel_ Let me start off by saying that I'm someone who *loved* _Strange Angels_ (and actually liked it more than _Hips and Makers_). And I also love _Sky Motel_! I've had the CD for about a week now and I'm really impressed with it. Seeing the new material performed live had made it seem as though it was going to be a Throwing Muses CD under a different name (not that that would have in any way been a bad thing), but instead it falls somewhere between Kristin's solo albums and a Muses album. It rocks more than the solo stuff, but isn't as intense as TM. My favorite track at this point is probably "A Cleaner Light," but it's already proving to be one of those albums where different tracks seem to stand out every time I listen to it so I expect that will keep changing. Anyway, if you're a Kristin Hersh fan you really need to run out and buy this CD, assuming of course that you don't have it already. :) I can say with some certainty that this is going to make my top 10 list for 1999. It sounds like an incontrovertible fact, something that we could verify with an experiment. I'm sure it could keep me entertained for at least 15 minutes (and possibly longer). How much Jewel-music does it take before the rash appears? >>What's the lowdown on the Lurie album? >I got it mostly because it had music from the two Jarmusch films he scored, >_Stranger Than Paradise_ and _Down by Law_. The Lounge Lizards music can be pretty >distracting, where the quartets are beautiful, restless musical sculptures. Ok, I've heard and enjoyed the music when I saw the films. The Lizards can be pretty too, and I was surprised that neither of the discs I have really seem all that experimental. They are both surprisingly melodic and fun to listen to. The Kronos piece is called Bella By Barlight and is on the album Winter Was Hard. It's pretty much like you described, and would be great movie music (for a very short movie - it's under 3 minutes long). I don't think it's the same Lurie piece I saw them perform about 10 years ago. That one was pretty hilarious though. It had that feel that I identify with him, so it was easy to recognize. Kronos played this lovely piece for a few minutes, then one of the musicians stood up, opened up the box they were sitting on, and took out and a boombox. They sat their for a few seconds, hit play on the boombox, and a tape of their part seamlessly merged back into the performance and they left the stage. One after another, the rest of the quartet did this, until the show ended with the piece being played by four boomboxes on an empty stage. neal np: Winter Was Hard - Kronos Quartet ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #258 **************************
