Since then I've stumbled on a few things which may or may not have been discussed here before, nevertheless, hope you don't mind if I bring them up - possibly again. I posted earlier about some findings from a Peter Hammill list I've subscribed to. Among the suggestions of other music there was a tip about Melbourne. Melbourne is the brother and sister combo of Doug Melbourne on keyboards and Carrie Melbourne on Chapman stick and vocals. Stick players are few and far between, and this is definitely the first and only female stick player I've heard of. They have an album called "Indian Ocean", available from Amazon, or if you eschew the massive, also Mystic Records in the UK. It's a very pretty and mellow album, kinda jazzy but meandering a bit from there. I'm still not clear myself on what sounds are stick or other instruments (and that goes for other bands with stick players, and I'm a King Crimson/Tony Levin fan), perhaps someone who knows more about the stick would be more (or less) impressed. A post here a couple of weeks ago led me to check out Deni Bonet. Bought her EPs. What fun! This is one of my favorite things, talented people doing music with a sense of humor (comes from being a long toothed Zappa fan, I guess). Deni is a top notch rock violinist (again, name all the rock violinists you know, much less female) who writes bold and catchy songs with sometimes scurrilous lyrics. Reminds me a little of Liz Phair but with more focus on musicianship. Her tunes are a joy. Apparently she played last year's Lilith Fair, at least in Saratoga if not elsewhere. I didn't go. Stupid me. She plays on a couple of tunes on Sarah McLachlan's Solace album too. Lastly, and not leastly, I recall a thread here about guitarists, female and male, and I don't remember if this one was mentioned, I should have brought it up but it slipped my mind: Leni Stern. Her music is heavily jazz based, but she does write songs that would appeal to the non-jazz fan too. About a year and a half ago I saw the Nudes (who opened for Happy in NYC in August '96) and talked to Stefanie (cello player) after the gig. She was selling Nudes albums (which I already had) and also Leni Stern's Black Guitar CD. They'd apparently done gigs together in NYC. I bought it and liked it a lot - but time has a way of making you forget these things. I recently picked up her Recollection CD and was reminded how damn good of a guitarist she is. Its available thru Harmony Ridge. Incidentally, Land of the Blind's first CD is now available thru Harmony Ridge. I believe that is now the only place it is available from. Update your Ectopia info accordingly. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #254 **************************
