It's interesting you should say that--I was noticing, on the other hand, how different recent shows have been from the first Happy Rhodes show I saw (in '96, I think) where her self-deprecating humor bothered me. At that show she seemed less secure about being on stage, and I did get the feeling that somewhere inside she was afraid that what she was saying might be true. Now she's so poised and self-confident on stage that I just took what she said as more of her clowning around. I don't think for a minute that she doubts the value of that album. Anyway, my name is Eric, I'm 17 years old and from Tennessee. Yesterday I got a package in the mail and it was a CDR of an album called "Warpaint" by Happy Rhodes, a person I met on a Kate Bush list told me I just had to hear her so I agreed. So I popped it in and immediatly fell into the same trance like when I first heard Kate Bush and Tori Amos...it was amazing. Then I came to a song called "Words Weren't Made for Cowards" and I was like "WOW she's singing with Kate!!!" LOL, then of course I realized this was Happy singing...the resemblence is UNCANNY! Okay that's enough going on and on, I'm glad I found this list. Besides Happy I love Stevie Nicks, Kate bush, Tori, Sheryl Crow, Rufus Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, on and on and on. :) I hope I can meet some cool people and learn more about Happy Rhodes. -Eric === "Well, it's laughter that comes up when I cry for you. The Velvet Janes are wonderful: Their music is a mix of pop, rock, folk and grunge, with a strong acoustical backbone. They sing about life (what else is there to sing about?) and have pleasantly clever and creative lyrics. The Velvet Janes are Martine Locke and Rose Farrow, who come from Alicesprings and Perth, Australia, respectively. Their debut album is Venus Calling; their most recent, Opus No. 3. I've only had a chance to listen to both quickly, but I like, I like a lot. As far as I can tell, the easiest way to get either CD is from The Velvet Janes directly, at http://velvetjanes.com.au/. Julia was not bad, she was a confident performer with a strong voice and some good songs, and she definitely made some fans at her first show in Canada. As for me I found that there were a few songs I liked quite well but then quite a lot that I found quite boring as well... I liked enough of her songs that I'll definitely keep tabs on her progress but I wasn't floored by her and I'm not running out to my nearest CD store to buy her CD, which was just released yesterday up here in the Great White North. Ben Lee was amazing. What do people here think of him? Watching him I could only wonder if Dylan's early shows were like this. He performed with a lot of heart and intensity whether he was playing by himself or with his extremely-young-looking band. He had two keyboard players, one of which danced around like a pixie and was thoroughly entertaining to watch, and the other which occasionally played something that played and sounded like a distorted theremin but looked like a simple box with no tubes or anything sticking out of it (maybe I was standing too far away to see it clearly). Excellent show, I recommend him to any ectophiles who like music in the Dylan vein. And not five minutes into it, KaTe's number came up! >They're doing numbers 60 >through 41 and I heard that Kate ranks somewhere around 55! Actually, she was 46. :) The montage had nice little 3-second clips of Tori Amos and Paula Cole talking about how much they each admire her as a producer. And Julianna Margulies as a host was an added plus. :) I had no clue this was going to be happening ... thanks, Josh! Maybe they'll repeat it yet again so I can actually get it on tape. A friend picked up a Stewart Management & Booking promo disc entitled "Colorado Artist Sampler" (creative, eh?) at Folk Alliance and let me drool over a few songs on there. Chief among them was a track entitled "Rainbow" by Marie Beer. Were I to create a list of new-to-me songs so far this year, this would be at the top - number 1 with a bullet. Voice, intonation, music, production, lyrics - it all fits. As for the requisite comparisons, hmmm... slower, huskier Kristen Hersh at her 4AD-iest, "Rainbow" could have fallen off "This Mortal Coil - Unplugged" had MTV had the sense to produce such an album. One of those songs that makes you reach for the repeat-track button 'just one more time'. In fairly stark contrast, her other track on the compilation is "House of Love", a Fiona Apple-ish piano ballad which by itself probably wouldn't have wowwed me, but along side "Rainbow" it traces the outline of an artist I'd very much like to hear more from. Unfortunately there's very little info on her on the web - turned up a few concert announcements from 97-99, a one-sentence review or two of a show, reference to her other artistic endeavors, and one (now there are a few) references to the (and here's why the bells went off) Women from Mars project, but no info on any real releases she might have. Despite having a brief bio of the women involved and a couple of release dates (from late spring), the Women from Mars web page (www.womenfrommars.com) doesn't even contain a track listing, much less ordering information. Be warned, though, it does contain a 400K image (resized to fit in the area a 20K picture could fill quite well), though, so attack it with lynx or with graphics disabled in the browser of your choice if you're going in by modem. So if you (or any of the other Colorado 'philes) have a lead on anything Marie might have put out or be selling at shows, I'd be more than interested. bob np - Hoi Polloi - "Happy Ever After" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 23:18:48 -0400 From: four episode lesbian Subject: tori on letterman 7.29.99 Tori Amos on "Late Show With David Letterman," August 12th Tori Amos' highly anticipated "5 1/2 Weeks Tour" with Alanis Morissette doesn't kick off until August 18th, but you can get a sneak peak at what's in store for you when the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter performs live on CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" on August 12th. We haven't gotten final word yet, but we're crossing our fingers that the red-headed-one will be performing "Bliss," the first single from her upcoming double album, "TO VENUS AND BACK." The new album, which hits streets on September 21st, will feature an all-new full-length studio album, plus a second disc recorded live in concert during Tori's acclaimed 1998 "Plugged" world tour. "Bliss" is all set to go to radio on August 6th, and the follow up single, "1,000 Oceans" should follow in late September. I just thought I would let you guys jump on the discovery journey with me. I just got teh "Warpaint" CD and the person who made it for me put three other songs from various albums on it too. And this was my first "taste" of Happy Rhodes. This is probably my 6th or 7th time through and I'm starting to have certain songs grab a hold of me now...some of my favorites are "To Live in Your World", "Wrong Century", "Words Weren't Meant For Cowards", "warpaint" (of course), and "Collective Heart". :) -Eric === "Well, it's laughter that comes up when I cry for you. For the last couple months I've been following a Peter Hammill mailing list. For those who say "who?", Peter is an english singer/songwriter who founded the band Van der Graaf Generator in like, 1968. He has done tons of albums over the years, and is productive today. He is known for his intense vocal performances, his complex and thought provoking lyrics, and his fierce independence from mainstream record producing paradigms. Sound familiar? Kevin Bartlett has been known to post here espousing his pleasure hearing this or that Hammill release. At any rate, during a recent lull in the PH list, someone asked about member's other musical interests. And shortly, the query became focused on female artists in particular. I was kind of surprised at the number of people who responded with praise about Jane Siberry. There have been many many responses of people citing their favorite Jane songs. "Oh My My" seems to be the most mentioned. I posted brief descriptions of the music of Happy and Veda Hille. There were a few responses to that, and surprisingly the responses were more familiar with Veda than Happy. The list does seem to have more Eurpean members than US members. Just thought it was interesting. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #253 **************************
