I won't be able to make Happy's Tin Angel show as I've got singing gigs the day before and the day after. Makes it a little difficult to make the trek. Now that there's a second opportunity to hear her play in September, I might be able to make this one. I have a gig the day after the show, but it's not til late and I can travel back in time to make it. With that in mind, are there going to be group hotel room,.places to stay, etc. as there are plans for the Tin Angel weekend? Will people be meeting before and after, etc? The last time I met fellow Ectophiles was in Chicago for a Sarah M. concert. Had a ball and put some faces to the on screen names I've been meeting. (Chris, Vickie, Mike M. Mitch, Steve, Valerie N. etc.) What a fun time! I really would like to have a repeat of this experience. So, if there's going to be a Chicago "Ectofest", I'll be there. I'd like to be at Ectofest in CT. And please Meredith, don't be too down after reading one disapproving response as the majoity of responses gave been along the "woo hoo" variety. I just had to throw in my $.02 on this one. First of all, I am starting to seriously regret leaving the East Coast when it comes to music! I have no idea if I'll be able to get back to Connecticut for this, but I will do my best to try, and will also try and get all of my friends from my hometown of West Hartford to attend. Thanks to all who are already involved for putting this together--it's a great idea! I can only imagine what a jam session with all those artists would be like. Wow! Secondly, I do start to think sometimes that we all get a little to possessive of ecto and of "our" respective artists. While ecto on the outside professes to be open to newcomers, we are very territorial creatures. We are often fiercely resentful when our cherished indie artists become well known--witness the backlash against Sarah McL. or Tori, or the negative reactions to Alanis's new(ish) disc, or the recent discussion of Joan Osborne. "Mainstream" is a dirty word around here. Admittedly, I have also been known to get tetched when one of my favorite artists signs with a major label--after all, my hobby is collecting music from "before they were stars"--Y Kant Tori Read, Sheryl Crow's unreleased album, and the like. But witness the frequent habit newbies and delurkers have of feeling they need to cite their favorite ecto artists to prove their validity in the community. In saying this I am not trying to deliberately point out anyone who has posted in this thread or any other, it was just brought to mind. Ecto is a word--a prefix to be precise. It is from the Greek, meaning outside, hence ectoskeleton, etc. (The Greeks also gave us the concept of moderation. Which I am encouraging here.) But we all know the etymology. How about the modern usage? There is a term in modern Italian performance called "Ecto Musica," which refers to solo instrument performances that are completely improvised. Ghostbusters fans were very familiar with the term "ectoplasm" from a completely different vantage point. If you type "ecto" into a browser, I'd imagine you'd turn up as many Ghostbusters sites as you would Happy Rhodes sites. Personally, I first found ecto when doing some online research on crustaceans... While the implied meaning of Ecto around these parts is a given, to the outside world it is just a prefix. Has ecto the mailing list ever copyrighted the name? It is not a religion, it is not a registered trademark. It no more reflects the essence of Happy Rhodes's fanbase than does, say, the words "Serenading Genius." (BTW, am I alone in seeing Serenading and the debacle around its creation as another recent example of our possessiveness?) Perhaps we should add a mantra like they have in love-hounds, where posts are regularly ended with "KB is no.1 KB is no.1 KB is no.1." I am not saying we don't have a right to feel protective of ecto, especially those oldtimers who created the group and watch it grow from 6 members on a Rutgers server to its present size. It is that attitude which keeps this place so flame free and open for discussion. But, while woj owns the list and Happy owns the rights to the album, nobody owns the word. Frankly, if I can post hideous words like ectoleo and ectoast to the list and not get my keister flamed, I don't see why Meth can't take a much more respectable word like EctoFest and turn it into a respectable concert. (And who's to say there won't be Ecto Fair(e)s, Ectopaloozas, EctoCons, Ectofiestas and fetes, and Ecto wrap parties after we make "Ecto: the Film" (kind of like a Spinal Tap documentary on how the smashingly successful Ecto concert series got started. Also related to "Abba: the Film." Ahem...) Stepping off the soapbox now. And if you think this is incoherent and rambling, you should see my online journal! - --Kay (http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Gala/8060/) ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. NO it's not the ATTACK OF THE KILLER BSIDES CD that i have yet to find but am looking hard for. just some bsides and stuff that compiled from singles i have floating about. anyone have info on that particular bootleg please let me know, cuz i would LOVE to get ahold of that one and the companion CD as well... thanks, please email me personally. iflin@sirius.com irvin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 12:47:25 +0200 From: Dirk Kastens Subject: Carol Laula Hi, anyone who knows Carol Laula? A friend told me that I would like her song White Dress. So I listened to some audio samples and ordered her 1992 album Still. Her voice reminds of Jonatha Brooke, but the music is more straight and the songs are not as deep as JB's songs, but Still also contains some great ballads. Both of which I would never have heard of had it not been for ecto. The first is Dido's _No Angel_ which has generated a lot of discussion here lately. I've only listened to it once so far, but I pretty much agree with everything that's been said. There are some really good songs, and some that don't do anything for me. But overall it's a strong and promising debut. I would most compare her to Sarah McLachlan, and a bit less so to Beth Orton. I also hear some Tracey Thorn (of Everything But the Girl) in there. Afro Celt Sound System _Volume 2: Release_ I never heard of them before seeing their Guide entry, and not really looking at it I don't think, but just seeing that they had one, and being interested by the promise of the name, and keeping it in my head. Then today while browsing through the international section, I saw this 1999 release. Haven't listened to a lot of it yet, but I am excited. The African-Celtic fusion is really interesting, and works well. Like Capercaillie's work with Sibeba on _Beautiful Wasteland_ and there is a Putomayo collection of Afro-Celt music. Anyone know anything about other interesting culture fusion music? Also, I watched _Go Fish_ tonight and finally heard Mila Drumke. She has a lovely voice. How would people compare the song from the soundtrack, "Someone," to her other songs? Where do I begin? [whew! As I wipe my brow.] Bill Mazur forwarded to me the message from Jack Sutton with his very kind review of our disc "Faces, Traces & Timelines" and I wish to thank him for all his kind words. Jack's TLC and solid efforts through his work with Harmony Ridge Music have supported Bill and I through the cocoon stage of launching a new disc. My hat goes off to you, Jack! Bill has long been telling me that I should join Ecto to get in on all the great discussions. I totally agree, but as some of you know, I have had some serious setbacks that have kept me from becoming a contributor and active part of your group. Shortly after completing our disc at the end of last year, I underwent cervical spine surgery. Not only did this result in the inability to speak for some time, but also a long period of recovery only to find that there might be more surgery to come in the near future. (Sigh) There have been some continued setbacks since the surgery, and I'm not sure how much longer it will be until I'm "myself" again. I currently don't have use of my left arm or hand (someone else is typing this for me!). Apparently, there are some nerves that are getting pressure from disks or scar tissue that is causing the pain and trouble with my hand and arm. I won't know for sure exactly what it's going to take to make it all better, but I am working with many doctors to try to make a complete, speedy and successful recovery. Although discouraged, I don't feel defeated and I'm looking forward to a comeback. There is really nothing as wonderful as playing music with Bill, I look forward to that the very most! So...I've not yet joined Ecto as I don't think that I can keep up with the messages coming in, or be able to respond with any of my normal enthusiasm. :c} As soon as I am able, I plan to join in. Until then, I'll be keeping up with the archives - which is something that I've enjoyed doing during my down time. I had not heard of Happy Rhodes until Bill brought a disc to my home (Many Worlds...). I was instantly taken by her voice and the overall sensation of her music. Bill was kind enough to let me keep the disc, and then bought me another (The Keep). These 2 discs have become part of my "essential music" diet. In reading through the archives, I see that I am not alone in my high regard for Happy's music. There are many other important people to thank for bringing solace into my life during these tumultuous times. Thank you so much Neile Graham, for including us in the Ecto guide - I feel honored to be amongst all of the other fine musicians you've included in your website. Special thanks also go out to Marion Kippers and Jeff Hanson for their enlightening perspectives on our disc "Faces, Traces & Timelines." Thank you both for your kind words. I'll be seeing you around the archives and will let you know as soon as I am able to join in. Until then.....
