Well, this morning at work I had VH1 on in the background for music while I thumb through a hideously addictive John Grisham book. Anyhow, I hear an interesting, somewhat husky female voice singing, and I look up to see a blonde woman singing. The video starts out with her standing in a closet, looking through the blinds at a bed which looked to be occupied by a man and woman. The sound reminded me of some of Sarah McLachlan's better work, with a nice production behind it. Vocals weren't quite as breathtaking as Sarah's, but the sound was reminiscent. The chorus went something like, "I can't rest until you're here next to me". Of course, I vowed to look up when the video ended to see who it was, but forgot... anyone know? It was a pretty blonde woman. Mark - -- Mark A. To review, here is what we are trying to accomplish with your help: In an attempt to raise the necessary funds to reacquire the original masters, copyrights and re-recording rights of Eventide and Painted Pictures, we are making available "very limited editions" of the following items: 1. GEG T-SHIRTS. Your choice of color and sizes. 2. A DOUBLE CD SET featuring "raw feed" performances from the spring concert recordings. These discs contain over 20 of GEG's most popular songs, plus the new tracks "Big Red Boat" and "Even." Glitches, laughs, restarts and banter run rampant over this action-packed GEG effort. 3. BONUS CD OF UNRELEASED MATERIAL. These are songs that have been recorded, but never released by the band. Fan favorites such as "The Pirate Song," "Calm Through the Thunder," and "The Last Time" (a.k.a. "The Banjo Song") are just a few of the gems on this full length disc. 4. ADVANCE PRE-RELEASE, POST-PRODUCTION COPIES, signed and dated, of all future GEG CDs. You get the "artist's cut" of the latest albums GEG makes hot off the presses--before they are released to the public. 5. A LIFETIME PASS FOR TWO to any concert performed by GEG anywhere in the world! These are transferable passes if you wish to lend them to a friend or relative. You need only call a week prior to the performance to inform us that you or your guests will be attending. Only 20 available nationwide! In 1991, I organized a Yes fan convention in the same hotel as these rowdy sorority and fraternity brothers (hotel management of course not telling me beforehand!), and they spent the whole night breaking liquor bottles in the hall, throwing furniture in the pool, and knocking on doors and telephoning my attendees' rooms to frighten them. Then, strangely enough, I saw the video for "St. Theresa" on VH-1 (the second version, with Joan playing a motel housekeeper). I was in a state of disbelief that this was the same singer! That still wasn't enough to make me buy the album as I've been burned by the "There's only one song I like on the CD and I don't like the rest of them" blues on more than one occasion. So, it wasn't until I saw the video for "Right Hand Man" that I finally decided to give it a try. The blues-rock atmosphere of the song appeales to the musician in me. The lryical content and video appealled to my hormonally unbalanced personality ( I have several different personalitys working inside my brain like time share owners). Much to my surprise and delight, the entire CD reeks of southern blues influences and contains nothing else similar to the mind numbing monotony of "One of Us". If the record companies are pushing her in that direction, then in true South Park fashion (think Kyle's mom) I'm going to organize a protest in front of the record label offices. I'm going to bring my high tension rubber strips, and we will slinghot ourselves to our deaths until they relent and allow Joan to put out an album based on her musical whims rather than commercial viability. Well, let me be the dissenting opinion here. While I enjoyed much of the CD, I think by far the best track was "One of Us". The standard way I've really seen religion tackled in song is in the Tori/Alanis way -- the whole repressed catholic thing -- so this brought a new perspective for me. (Small locals are handy for getting your name as your login.) I've finished my cross country travels and preying upon my friends and am now in my new apartment. Pretty much nothing is unpacked except a stereo, computer and bed, but hey, I can live like that for weeks! I didn't really see too many ectophiles on my travels, and all that I saw were in Chicago. So here are some thank yous to everyone who put me up (and put up with me) while I was there: Kay Cleaves - for the extreme generosity of putting a stranger into a very small apartment. Sorry we didn't see more of each other. Vickie (and Chris) - for days of hosting, throwing a little party, and keeping me up until at least 3 every night I was in Chicago! Mitch - thanks for using your mastery of the Chicago transit system to trek across town to visit. It was good to finally put a face to the dulcet tones on the cassettes. And Charley Darbo - thanks for playing tour guide and visiting, and all the music. I feel like I came away far too well in the music department. While in Chicago, I also went to the Double Door to see Angels of Light, Michael Gira's post-Swans band (which features Ingrid Karklin's drummer Thor on percussion). It was amusing how easy it was to pick Thor out of the club. I suspect it would have been easy under most circumstances, but the fact that the club was pretty goth-heavy thanks to openers My Scarlet Life, made it humorously trivial. It was a real treat for me to finally get to see MSL, which was one of the reasons I went to the show. They recreate their world music influenced dance/trance music quite well live. I was expecting a bit more spark or energy which wasn't there (perhaps because of the icey manner of the two lead singers, who are quite friendly offstage). Anyway, it was a good start to the evening, and they certainly had a lot of fans there just to see them. Angels of Light had been called Swans unplugged in the paper, but I didn't think that sounded all that right. They didn't seem all that unplugged to me. They were loud! and the sound by the front of the stage, and apparently on stage, was pretty crummy. Sounded far better from the back. Some of the songs were amazingly intense, with the 5 piece band layering all of their instruments and shifting rhythms in sudden fits and starts. On one unrecorded track, they all looked exhausted by the end (and it was only the second number). There seemed to be an antagonism on the stage that I couldn't quite figure. Don't know if it was the sound problems or some sort of internal frission, or just the hard work of making the music. People seemed reasonably happy after the show. The Swans sound has changed pretty regularly over the years, so it's not clear to me why anything is or isn't the Swans (unless perhaps Jarboe has to be present). I'll be wading through my ecto backlog over the next week or so, so I'll probably be posting to out of date threads for a while. neal np: some dance party on the radio ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 00:40:00 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: joan osborne On Sun, Jul 11, 1999 at 12:02:02AM -0400, Mark Miazga wrote: > But I thought "One of Us" was a great song. You're not completely on your own there Mark - I kinda like that song too. I think "One of Us", while not being an earth-shatteringly brilliant song, has a great groove and interesting lyrics, and I really like it. Has anyone heard the version by Mr Squiggle (or whatever Prince is calling himself these days)? Boy, you asked this question at JUST the right time! :) Check out tomorrow's (July 11) New York Times magazine for a long and extremely fascinating, revealing article about Aimee and her struggles with the music biz. You can read it online at http://www.nytimes.com/library/magazine/home/19990711mag-music-mann.html Internet distribution's not going to be a cure-all for the types of major label horrors that are described in the article, but I think it at least will provide worthy artists with a means to get their music to their fans without having to resort to the heartache that Aimee has suffered through. Aimee Mann is continuing to have awful experiences with the major labels. Apparently she has a new recording all done (and I think she might be selling it at shows, but not sure... I'll let you know after the 29th, when I'll see her at The Ark in Ann Arbor), but Interscope won't let her release it.
