That would be Joan Osborne's "Spider Web", from her _Relish_ album. Great song, very good album. It came out four years, four months ago. This is a ridiculous amount of time to spend between albums, especially for someone who is recording what is basically her followup to a hit debut album ("Early Recordings" doesn't count). Latest I heard, the record company wasn't happy with the "hit single" potential of her latest batch of recordings, and sent her back to the studio. I believe that Fall 1999 is the latest release date for this oft-delayed followup album. Too bad. np: Rose Polenzani, _Dragersville_. I received an anonymous demo from someone at Arista earlier this year and was very surprised on how fresh the music sounded but wasn't altogether enamored with it. Then I received an unmastered promo of _No Angel_ a few months later and realized these two had the same vocalist: Dido. I liked the album and knew she was going to be a favorite with McLachlan/Orton/O'Connor/Thorn fans. Then, a week before her album was to be released, she did a private showcase in Los Angeles and though the music didn't come through as well as it could have, it still had a certain appeal that drew you in. She's got a young, unpolished voice (she probably smokes) that was occasionally obstructed by a scratch-happy DJ whose edits would only appeal to a "Puffy"-loving suburbanite whose never heard an Afrika Bambaataa album in their life. Also, if I were her tour manager I'd get her acoustic guitarist a Guild or one of the Martin re-issues or possibly an old Taylor because his acoustics sounded too bright against the warmth of her voice. Anyway, I'm nitpicking. She starts Lilith in Phoenix... I checked out all of the Milla shows (she split her last Thursday show into two shows) and her first Thursday went much more smoothly. Her new sound is an almost obvious amalgam of the music she's been listening to and seen lately. Before her recent Luna Park engagement, I chatted with her at a Devics show who were opening for Remy Zero (two of my favorite local bands that I hear she likes a lot). If you've ever seen The Devics (or other local bands like The Ethers or Paige) then Milla's "evolutionary" sound might be less disappointing to a fans of her more ethereal stuff. The ethereality is still there but it's more guitar-driven and layer-heavy. By the way, I've never recommended The Devics to Ecto but I think most of you would like them. They're led by lead vocalist Sara Lov and they have a new album entitled "if you forget me...". Listen to some of the bands mentioned above on a new compilation called _Love Letters_ (check out the chorus hook on The Devics' "Fireside" -- one of my favorites my them... http://www.theblacklodge.com/loveletters/main.html Downy Mildew's former lead singer, Jenny Homer, has since gone solo and performs occasionally here in Los Angeles. Her last show highlighted textures in lo-fi post-punk with hints of DM's rhythmic brightness. She hasn't had a show in town for several months though. DM, by the way, also have a 1986 self-titled EP that's also pretty hard to find. And check out Jenny Homer with Farina doing a great version of "Charade" on the '96 Henry Mancini tribute album _Shots in the Dark_... I like Chan's most recent album but her shows can sometimes be hard to watch. Her performances seem to lack focus and she never appears to be having fun playing in front of people. This might be different when playing to her hometown or her other favorite places to play but at her LA shows, she's looked very uncomfortable, hence, making her audiences have similar discomfort... The lady someone mentioned on BET sounds a lot like Medusa, a Los Angeles-based hip-hop/soul singer that has quickly become one of the most beloved artists in town. Most people think of her as "another Badu" and it's hard to deny the comparisons since both are similar musically and lyrically. She was recently up for Best New Artist at the LA Weekly Music Awards (against another favorite Ms. Spiritual Tramp of 1948). She also heads a hip-hop tribe of female vocalists called Feline Science and plays regularly around town. I've seen her numerous times including a very memorable performance opening for KRS-ONE last year. If you like Erykah, Lauryn Hill or the more organic jazz side of hip-hop, you'd get into her music. I received the following today -- forwarded with permission: From: "RICH MACHLIN" A COUPLE OF NOTES REGARDING THE HAPPY RHODES SHOWS AT TIN ANGEL 7/24. 1. As stated , people with dinner reservations at Serrano get reserved seating at Tin Angel. The order that reservations are made in is the primary consideration in determining seating at Tin Angel. But timeliness for the dinner reservation, as well as size of party does enter into the equation. Eating quckly to be first in line DOES NOT affect seating. 2. The name of the restaurant is SERRANO 3. 7/24 is the date of the annual Greek Picnic here in Philadelphia. The Greek Picnic is a yearly convention of Black Fraternities and Sororities. Traditionally the Greek Picnic causes traffic snarls, random and often inexplicable road closings and driving nightmares. Patrons coming to Tin Angel are advised to allow extra time to deal with these headaches. I have tried to get exact information from the Philadelphia Police on how to best advise people but, as of yet, have been unsuccesful. These warnings should be particuarly directed at those attending the 1030 show that night. I don't know, I absolutely love Joan Osborne, she's been my girl ever since Relish first came out when I was visiting Chicago in 9th or 10th grade... and I saw her perform twice in one day at the New Orleans jazz festival in 10th grade... and she rules... and I feel so bad for her having to perform the same damn 12 songs over and over again for 4 years... actually, make that 11 songs, since she doesn't perform "Let's Just Get Naked" live, because she thinks people don't get it. Which I'm sure they don't. Anyhow, thinking about how Joan is getting all stifled by her loser record label (actually... Mercury, the parent label of Blue Gorilla and Womanly Hips, is one of the now-dead majors, one of the unfortunate bastards who got swallowed in all of these retarded corporate mergers... so I'm sure all of her new A&R folks don't get her) makes me really dern upset and sad... I miss her... John === ain't no way i lost this war and ain't no way you won _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
