I plan to use the drive primarily for creating music CDs, but also for doing some data storage and backups. Right now I'm leaning toward a CD-RW drive over a simple CD-R both because of the utility of CD-RW for doing backups and what appears to be a much wider selection of drives to chose from. I'm going to be getting an internal IDE drive as opposed to SCSI simply because I don't currently have a SCSI adapter or an empty PCI slot to put one in. I've talked to a couple of friends who have IDE drives and they seem to be pretty satisfied with them (one has an HP CD-Writer Plus 8200i and the other a Sony Spressa CRX100E). So does any one have any advice to offer? Thanks. :) And you're not that far from NYC -- the next time there's a good show you should plan to come in and meet up with us. Dorothy Scott is doing a residency at the Living Room every Monday in August -- I'm sure we'll be at at least one of those. Something to think about. >Cowboy Junkies: Miles From Our Home > Listening to this right now. Only on track 5, but I like it a lot. It's a great album -- easily my favorite of theirs (and I like pretty much all of their stuff). They're also a truly great live band. Margo Timmins is a goddess. >Questions: Can someone recommend really good, ectoish, and cheap used cd >stores in NYC? St. Mark's Place, between 2nd and 3rd Aves. I can never remember which one is which, but there's one that's up a flight of stairs (I think that's St. Mark's Sounds) that has a really good selection, and you never know what you're going to find in the $0.88 bins. Across the street and down a couple doors is a place (Smash?) with milk crates full of $1 CDs underneath the steps. You have to have a strong back and the time and patience to paw through the literally hundreds of discs there, but you're guaranteed to find at least one treasure. I haven't seen a lot in the way of world music at those places, though -- the Tower Outlet (on the corner of Broadway and Lafayette) might be a good place to start there. Again, you need the time and patience to go through the mess, but it's almost always worth it. A couple more things about Cowboy Junkies (I was a bit too late hitting "send" there before) ... They have a new self-released disc called _Rarities, B-Sides, and Slow, Sad Waltzes_ which you can currently only get at amazon.com, though once they have the server set up at their new web home , it'll be sold through there. It's an interesting little collection for the Junkies completist. Their tour dates are at . Alas, JoAnn, they're not coming to our neck of the woods on this tour. :( They are playing in Seattle the night woj and I get there, and I'm sorely tempted, but I have a feeling I'll be too tired from travel to really enjoy it, so I think I'll refrain. Sigh. Now I'm really off to see the movie. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Jul 1999 14:38:42 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: penelope houston 10 july brownies nyc howdy to the nyc-area ectofolks -- i'm thinking really seriously of taking the train up from dc to attend the aforesaid show. any interest from the ecto contingent? - -- d. n.p. wendy maharry _fountain of youth_ - - "seventeen!" cried the humbug, always first with the wrong answer. - - oh no!! you've just read mail from doug = dmw@radix.net dmw@mwmw.com - - get yr pathos:www.pathetic-caverns.com -- books, flicks, tunes, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Jul 1999 19:15:54 -0400 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: CDR labeling Oh, I certainly did not read any sort of stone throwing at me or the compilation in your post. That sigh was built up over years of reading a wide variety of rumors and innuendo about the lack of reliability of all new technology. Not too long ago there was a long thread here about old CDs, oxidation, heat, sunlight, acts of god, etc etc. Read enough of this stuff (and its not just here) and it seems a miracle we have anything to listen to at all. And I'm not throwing stones at you either, I understand you're just a messenger here. Fact is, no one knows how long any of this new stuff will really last, the only way to really simulate the passage of long periods of time is to experience the passage of long periods of time. I figure I'll just enjoy the stuff while I have it, when it breaks, I'll try to figure out how replace it or move on to something else. Thanks for the tip, though, if I see one of these allegedly CDR-friendly markers around I'll pick a couple up (unless I hear horror stories about *them* first). ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Jul 1999 19:42:29 -0400 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: CD-R and CD-RW drives My CDRW is SCSI, at one time IDE CDR(W)s had some reliability problems but that seems to be rectified of late. Definitely might as well go CDRW. If the CD player on your stereo is pretty recent it might play audio CDRWs, mine does (manufactured Nov 1998). Besides being able to hear your compilations before committing them to CDR, its also useful for temporary storage of music that you might want to add to later. For example Kristen Hersh's Works in Progress, every so often I reburn that CDRW as new tunes are released. I've also started "ripping" my recent CD purchases to MP3 files that I burn on a CDRW. I take that to work and play it on my workstation using WinAmp. A single CDR(W) will hold over 10 hours of MP3 music. And of course I like to change the selections every couple weeks, so I just reburn it. Data storage and backup use is fine too, although I don't know if doing a system backup is a very efficient idea. A full CDRW takes about 40 minutes to erase (at least on my system). There are some backup programs that will use CDRW, but I think they require packet writing capability (which most recent drives support), and packet writing reduces the total amount of data you can store on the disc and requires a 40 minute or so formatting process as well. For full system backups I would still recommend tape - and this where the SCSI interface came in handy, coz I was able to buy a faster SCSI tape drive used from eBay - but even a decent capacity parallel port drive is preferable to system backup to CDRW. Tapes now hold lots more than CDRs, far fewer media changes required. But for specific backups or offloading of WAV/MP3 files, pictures, and downloaded material (including self-installing shareware EXEs) they're great. If all the CD ROM readers you will use have multisession support (and most modern ones do) you can write a data CDR, then add to it later, until it is full (at the expense of some overall space consumption overhead for each session). ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Jul 1999 19:45:07 -0400 From: Bill Adler Subject: CDR Markers, was: CDR labeling Panic set in, so I tracked down the CD-friendly markers. For anyone who's interested, you can get TDK CD-R markers at Egghead, www.egghead.com. The markers cost $1.88. The SKU number is AC 142010. Unfortunately, they're special order and it may take up to 30 days for them to arrive. Nervous as I am about my own CDs, I guess that compared to dropping them, keeping them in the car in 300-degree heat (think I'm kidding; just visit Washington, DC this 4th of July weekend), and occasionally flinging them across the room as I try to carefully open a jewel box, using the wrong marker isn't much to worry about. FWIW, I just read the "rules" on my Maxell CD-Rs: It says use a felt-tipped pen, but doesn't specify anything else. Off to see the fireworks on the mall... - --Bill n.p. My backup/storage needs are fairly modest, as I do already have a tape drive (not one that I'd recommend, but that's beside the point) and plan to use the CD-RW for things like downloaded programs (on the Windows side of things) and various tarballs/RPMs (on the Linux side). After doing some more research, on the web and Usenet, I've narrowed my probable choices down to the HP 8200i and the Ricoh MP7040A. The Ricoh has gotten lots of rave reviews of late, and unlike the HP can "overburn" and use the new 80 minute CDs, but for some strange reason it only seems to be carried at the moment by lesser-known retailers that I'm not really comfortable ordering from (despite the fact that some of the larger retailers carry other Ricoh CD-RW drives). By any chance do any ectophiles happen to own either of these drives (or the older HP 8100i)? Mike ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #227 **************************
