(this may be normal for cd-r media anyway) i haven't heard nasty stories about label glue, but i haven't been looking and i haven't used labels myself. over on loudfans, where i'm putting together a compilation of loudfan-bands, i decided to press the cd's rather than just duping them on cd-r, but that has obvious impact on the per-unit cost, especially for a modest run, and it means that i need to front the cost of mastering/pressing -- which is my plan -- or deal with a pre-order nightmare. in the meantime, when i burn archival cd's, i write with sharpies in tiny little letters on the clear inner ring. ;) - -- d. n.p. wake ooloo _hear no evil_ - - "seventeen!" cried the humbug, always first with the wrong answer. - - oh no!! you've just read mail from doug = dmw@radix.net dmw@mwmw.com - - get yr pathos:www.pathetic-caverns.com -- books, flicks, tunes, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jul 1999 17:23:29 -0400 (EDT) From: Heidi Heller Subject: Re: Ani One would think.. it actually worked well. It's almost that time ... woj and I are flying to Seattle next weekend. Whee!!! We'll arrive on the 10th, then head up to Vancouver on the 14th, return to Seattle on the 18th and fly home on the morning of the 19th. Since Neile and Jim aren't getting back from Turkey until the day we leave for Vancouver , the only time we're going to have to get together with them is the evening of the 18th, once we get back into town. If anyone would like to join the ectogather that night, please let me know -- I'm sure we can figure out a good place to hang out. And for you Vancouverites -- let me know if you'd like to get together! We're going to the folk festival at some point over the weekend, depending on when Veda's playing (if anyone can point me to a specific schedule, please do - their web site is useless, and the Pollstars and Musi-Cals of the world aren't detailed at all). Besides the Museum of Anthropology and the Vancouver Art Museum, there really isn't a lot on our definite itinerary. Recommendations (and directions to A&B Sound :) welcomed. I'm sure we'll end up wishing we had about twice as much time as we're going to have, but hey. At least we get to see some of the area. And I really can't wait to see Veda play in her hometown. That's going to be a blast. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 19:35:19 -0500 From: Suzanne Cerquone Subject: Fwd: Cliff Eberhardt at Fox Run, Saturday, July 10 >X-Sender: lalcorn@pop.ma.ultranet.com >X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 3.0 (32) >Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 16:12:09 -0400 >To: lalcorn@ultranet.com >From: Laurie >Subject: Cliff Eberhardt at Fox Run, Saturday, July 10 > >Hi! That will be what I go with by default. If anyone wants no sticky label, they can specify such when they request the disc. I'll send it blank if you want and you can take responsibility for your own labeling. FWIW, I do use Sharpies, but I use the Ultra Fine Point for CDs. Hopefully the amount of ink is negligible, if they are as vicious as rumored. I use Sharpies and nearly had a coronary when I saw the message about Sharpies causing damage to CD-Rs. There goes my car collection, I thought. It's been my experience with markers that they don't cause any damage, but then again, my experience is limited since I've only had a CD recorder for 10 days. Just have to keep my fingers crossed. It's only music, anyway. Right? FWIW, there's a good FAQ about recordable CDs at www.fadden.com/cdrfaq/. Fog -- thanks for putting the compilation together. So I'm clicking the clicker, ruffling through the cable channels as Part IV of "Sister Wendy's 'The Story of Painting'" is rewinding, when I hear Erika Badu's voice while flickering past an image of blue eyeshadow on a great brown eyelid. My finger does a double take and I back up to BET and see, not Erika Badu, but a shorter, fleshier woman, with a fleshier voice, and a Louise Brooks haircut. Squint your eyes and she's nude: her skintight leather dress is the same warm caramel as her skin. I am jealous of Woj and Meth's upcoming trip but wish them the very best of fun, weather, music, and safety. Also have to admit being a bit jealous of all the ecto gatherings taking place. I'm stuck in small town NJ and dying to meet people (in person) who don't think I'm a freak. But on to musical content... Picked up 3 new cds today, all on ecto recommendations: Cowboy Junkies: Miles From Our Home Listening to this right now. Only on track 5, but I like it a lot. I got interested in them after seeing them on Sessions at W. 54th and liking their sound and wondering who they were. What a joy to have another Canadian find! They remind me a bit of the Moon 7 Times, but darker. Perhaps a bit like Throwing Muses also, but more upbeat, and also a bit like Mazzy Star, but more energetic. I like it a lot. Natacha Atlas: Gedida First got interested in this from the Ladyslipper catalog description, and ecto reviews confirmed it. The blend of Middle Eastern and (how does one say it?) electronic/technological/dance music is seamless. And she has a lovely voice. Patty Griffin: Living With Ghosts Haven't listened to this yet, but anticipating good things based on the ecto discussion of this album a few weeks ago. Review tomorrow. Questions: Can someone recommend really good, ectoish, and cheap used cd stores in NYC? And if you know any with good world music collections, let me know too. And can someone recommend a good Cesaria Evora album to start with? Or just give an opinion as to whether Mar Azul or Cabo Verde is better? Thanks so much. This is just one tiny thing, a pet peeve of mine, just because I have a name that is constantly being mispelled. Ms. Badu's first name is Erykah. I don't know who the tattoed woman is, but she sounds interesting. Let us know if you find out more.
