Here's the front door address (not the tidiest, easiest to use front door, and he recommends ftp): http://home.ican.net/~phaedrus/tori/frameset.html The site creator (I just mistyped 'creatori', erp) is Ian Mullins. I once had trouble with a file and he seemed a lovely person in his reply. The special thing about his page is all the fan remixes and covers. With many of the official dance remix b-sides being so unimaginative there are no doubt pleasant surprises here. Its a great fan/admirer participation thing, reshaping songs like this. I thought, oh shucks, isn't this sweet, but didn't really want to listen to any of them! Are there many other artists that get this treatment? And when Tori's management notices, will it still continue? (and what did you use to find the song? some ftp search engine? I'm new to this stuff). karen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 08:19:23 -0400 From: "Kevin D. F. Highnight" Subject: Re: Lori Yates Lori Yates - if it is the same - actually started as a country singer!!! She released an album "Can't Stop the Girl" back in 1988 or 89. She had a cool single (which sounded more like a pop song than country) she cowrote with one of my idols, Matraca Berg, that was called "Promises, Promises". She had a video for the song but the album flopped and went out of print quickly. I just tracked the album down last year at a used store after years of searching. I've seen her name here and there on the internet on the recordings you guys mentioned and have wondered if it was her. > >Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 22:05:22 -0700 >From: "Kat" >Subject: Re: Lori Yates and Buffy TVS > >>My brain sorta kicked into a groove today as I was listening to Lori Yates' >>album _Untogether_ which i got last week from A&B Sound (along with the two >>new lilith volumes and holly mcnarland's live album)...so far, a pop bend >>on the ectronic (is that the term we agreed on?) side. "nslookup 24.66.34.42" gives the name as 24.66.34.42.mb.wave.home.com, so its probably someone's PC on the @home network. If @home uses static IP addresses, the URL will probably work again next time whoever it is turns their machine on. - Larne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 12:47:14 -0400 (EDT) From: Jet Girl Subject: Ecto Hostel Brooklyn Open For Biz Hi folx, Finally moved in here. Only been to one show since I arrived. Missed Diamanda Galas - very upset about that. However, did see Cibo Matto for the second time this year. Wow. They are so fun. Aside from the dude that was smoking crack in front of us it was a killer show. Sean Lennon on bass rocked the house. Beat the Donkey - a 14+ brazilian drum n bass band minus the bass this round added extra special sauce to several CM songs. They are touring with Luscious Jackson, check em out. Tons o fun. And if you're in NYC and need a place to crash, I gotta big pad and a queen size futon to share. scifi.wasabi.kIrI jetgrrl@magenta.com http://www.magenta.com/~jetgrrl/ 2 1 s t C e n t u r y T o o t h p i c k G i r l "Hola. Mmm. Tasty. What he said. It surprised me to hear Kristin Hersh describe _Strange Angels_ the way she did; it's such a wonderfully cohesive album that it's hard to imagine that she did it apparently without quite planning to. It's definitely my favorite of her solo albums (although I haven't yet heard _Murder, Misery, and then Goodnight_) and falls into my "silly grin" category: when I put it on, I often end up listening to the whole thing with a silly grin on my face. There are very few albums that do that for me. But I also miss Throwing Muses, and I'm glad Kristin still wants to make that kind of music -- _Limbo_ was by far my favorite album of 1996 and I was sad to see the Muses break up just when they were in a strong musical resurgence. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 09:38:03 -0500 From: "Bittner, Matthew (KTR) ~U" Subject: Ani Awesome! On Jane's site (www.sheeba.ca) she notes "Tree" as "Music for films and forests part 1" and "Lips" as "Music for saying it part 2." It would make sense that "Lips" is related to the fact that it might be more spoken-word-type material (though this is my guess ... I don't think she said it exactly). But, there's a great Real Audio recent interview with Jane on KCRW (http://www.kcrw.org/cgi-bin/db/kcrw.pl?show_code=mb&air_date=3/18/99&guest_name=Jane+Siberry&tmplt_type=show) that'd I'd recommend for even more details about her upcoming stuff. It was a great concert!! I almost didn't get to go because of work conflicts, but things cleared out at the last possible moment. I went with a friend who had misunderstood my invitation and thought that we were going to see Joni Mitchell herself in concert. I cribbed the set list at the end of this post from someone on the Joni list since I lost my pen halfway through the first set. The first half of the show included various songs from the albums Court and Spark through Mingus (excluding Hejira), and the second half was a complete performance of Hejira from start to finish. Joni Mitchell herself was sitting in the audience with the rest of us poor slobs. I stole glances at her a few times, and she seemed to really be enjoying herself. She was singing along (or at least mouthing the words) and smoking great amounts. The most exciting performers of the evening were Toshi Reagon, Chaka Kahn, Joy Askew (who sang a medley with Joe Jackson backing her on piano) and John Kelly. Those of you who have been raving about Joy Askew are certainly right about her talent. She was also one of the back-up singers during the course of the evening. I didn't realize until later that John Kelly was the guy who did the Paved Paradise one-man-show several years ago where he performed a whole show of Joni Mitchell tunes in drag. He has a phenomenal voice. Also notable was Erin Hamilton, who is Carol Burnett's daughter. She is very sexy and has a lovely, sultry voice. One of the stranger matches of performer to material was PM Dawn doing Song for Sharon. He's a big, sort of macho black guy, and the song is so much from a woman's point of view. But he did a great job, and what a sweet voice he has. Two of the performers whom I had most wanted to see were disappointments. Holly Cole, because she was a no-show to laryngitis. I was also really looking forward to seeing Jane Siberry, but she seemed to be totally unprepared and unrehearsed. She kept on flubbing the lyrics (and having to pull a cheat-sheet from behind her back). Although her second song (Strange Boy) was more successful because she was more in sync with the band in an improvisational way (à la the Maria project). Hejira is one of my favorite albums of all times, and it was wonderful to hear it performed like this. After the Hejira performance, Annie Ross and Jon Hendricks came out and did a rendition of Twisted, which Annie Ross had written in 1959. Finally, Joni herself came up on the stage. The band broke into Help Me, and everyone was encouraging Joni to sing. She feigned not knowing the lyrics and finally did an extended scat over the music. I'm wondering if there will be any sort of CD coming from this project, whether live or studio made. There was so much talent there. Oh, I didn't even mention the band, which was headed by Vernon Reid and also included Ravi Coltrane and Don Byron. - --Valerie Richardson Set list: Trouble Child - Toshi Teagon Jungle Line - Carl Hancock Rux and Dean Bowman People's Parties - Jane Siberry Same Situation - Ravi Coltrane Edith and the Kingpin, Jericho - Christina Wheeler Free Man in Paris - PM Dawn Rap based on I's a-Muggin' - PM Dawn (and Mood Swings) Don't Interrupt the Sorrow - Chaka Khan Just like this train - Eric Anderson Down to You (with part of a Case of You and Unchained Melody in the middle) - Joe Jackson and Joy Askew God must be a Boogieman - Erin Hamilton Court and Spark - Duncan Sheik Hissing of Summer Lawns - Chaka Khan Raised on Robbery - Sheryl Marshall Shadows and Light - John Kelly Intermission Hejira in its entirety: Coyote - Joy Askew Amelia - John Kelly (with don byron and doug weiselman) Furry Sings the Blues - Eric Anderson Strange Boy - Jane Siberry (Matthew Garrison, bass) Hejira - Chaka Khan Song for Sharon - PM Dawn Black Crow - Toshi Reagon Blue Motel Room - Erin Hamilton (Graham Haynes, cornet) Refuge of the Roads - Duncan Sheik Encore: Twisted - Annie Ross and Jon Hendricks Special guest appearance ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #225 **************************
