GRRL ROCK.com can be found at http://www.GRRLROCK.com GRRL ROCK.com is an online magazine dedicated to emerging women in music. GRRL ROCK began in 1998 as a fanzine for Pepper Acton. This project was started by Jessica Ciokan, GRRL ROCK's Editor-in-Chief and Kristin Paskowski, GRRL ROCK's Managing Editor. The first subscribers were members of the Pepper Acton e-mail bulletin board. In January of 1999 the decision was made to make GRRL ROCK national. In March of 1999 this occurred. GRRL ROCK is, both online and in print, a free magazine. GRRL ROCK prospers by the generosity of its advertisers. GRRL ROCK.com promises to do many things not done in the printed magazine. The first online issue will include: * A feature article on Colorado's Women From Mars Project * A feature article on Seattle's Persephone's Circle * A feature article on Indiegrrl, a national tour and co-op of over 250 women artists * CD reviews of local and national artists * WHERE WERE YOU? a sideline article on missed shows * Artist of the Month, a recommendation of the editorial staff of artists to watch GRRL ROCK.com will also launch two separate e-mail bulletin boards. These bulletin boards will act as unmoderated forums, and news listings by and for women artists. * GRRL ROCK Nation will be an open forum, and co-op for women artists nationwide * GRRL ROCK Colorado will be a list dedicated to artists functioning in the Colorado area. Both lists will be available at GRRL ROCK.com - http://www.GRRLROCK.com or at http://www.Onelist.com We invite you to join us on Thursday by taking a look at GRRL ROCK.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 17:51:56 -0400 From: Stuart Myerburg Subject: Re: tori at jones beach Nick Nadel wrote: > is dido playing lilith? she's perfect fot it. i can't believe jerry > falwell's gone after lilith now. and it sure took him awhile, did he just > notice the name? The other "headliners" are Mya, Luscious Jackson, Martina McBride and SHeryl Crow. However, the recent posts about Dido made me decide to see who's been lined up for the B-Stage in Phoenix-- Dido, Cibo Matto, Victoria Williams, and Lisa Sanders (a former San Diegan Jewel & Joy friend). That's almost enough to convince me to go--but then my senses come back and tell me why pay $40 or so to go sit in 110 degree heat to see short mediocre performances by artists you've mostly seen before? I do want to see Victoria Williams sometime--but I just don't think Lilith is the right venue to see her rush through a 20-minute set. I'd love to check out Dido, Cibo Matto and Luscious Jackson as well, but somehow I think they'd all be better in a small club. And I've already seen Lisa Sanders in small clubs. I've got to give it to the organizers--they're definitely getting more diverse lineups--but unfortunately that probably just means more people will be rude when people like Victoria play. Well, perhaps I'll still give in and go--who knows. Right now I'm just feeling cranky and upset over how few good acts come through town, and when they do, play horrible venues like America West Arena. Haven't been to Blockbuster Desert Sky Pavilion yet (where Lilith will be), but the name alone gives me shivers. Jeff n.p. However, there's enough negativity in the world. Am I the only Ecto subscriber who breaks into a rash at the mention of her name? :) Anyway...since this list seems to be a decent repository of people with eclectic taste in music, I'm about to play "stump Ecto". I'm making a tape for a dear friend of mine who looks like Buster Keaton, and wanted to put a tune from one of his silent films on a mix tape I'm making for him. Unfortunately, the only two Keaton soundtracks listed on IMDb.com were for _It's a Mad^4 World_ and _A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum_. Not quite what I was looking for. Anyone got a good idea where I could find some Keaton tunage? And, to turn the conversation to a female musician I do like (heaps and heaps, in fact) -- has anyone gotten the new Kristin Hersh single? I'm too tired and incoherent to talk about it now, but I got it the other day and have been listening to it addictively. Quite good, though it's a bit of a departure for KH (omigod, she's happy!). After years of regretting not making it out east for a show and a year of fruitless hoping that she'd make her way westward, I'm finally going to see Happy! Perhaps I was just looking for an excuse, but I'm taking it as a sign of divine intervention that Southwest has a special this week - St. Louis to Baltimore for $57 each way. A 2 hour drive northish will land me in Philly not only to see Happy, but also Melissa Ferrick (who I've also been wanting to see for ages, certainly long before her scheduled, then cancelled, show here a couple springs back) the night before. Personally, I can't think of a better way to spend my first vacation days of the year (11 hours/day, 7 days/week for 3 months really gets old). Well, this is not really an answer, and it's probably way more involved than you want to be (plus, sounds like you've already got the rest of the taped planned), but have you thought about making your own soundtrack to a Buster Keaton silent film? It's a good way to use the ol' imagination. I friend of mine once did that with the 1992 Lars Von Trier film "Zentropa." That, of course, is not a silent film, but has great visual that would evoke definite musical moods. For a Buster Keaton movie, hmmm ... two things that come to my mind are Tori's "The Wrong Band" and Wendy MaHarry's "Too Busy Looking Out the Window." I don't know why those come to mind, but it's probably more for the music than the lyrics. That's it for me. Mark np Martin L. Hey folks-- No, it's not ecto mad libs. Actually, on a whim today, I was discussing with some friends the hypothetical "What would you really like to do with your life?" The outcome for me was a new idea for something to do with myself. I will have a nice piece of real estate (with a house) coming to me in a few years, situated in Wellfleet, MA on Cape Cod. It's about 25 minutes south of Provincetown. The last time I was up there, and for years previous, there have been no music stores anywhere between P-town and Hyannis. I'm of a mind to change that. After all, what vacationing beach-loving tourist wouldn't want to pick up a CD to go along with their vacation? Besides that, the town is populated with leftover hippies--throw in some psychedelic vinyl and folk coffeehouse performances and I may have a new career for myself. The drawback is that I know absolutely nothing about running a store. I've worked in a few, but have no idea what it would take to get set up, etc. I figured, since so many of you are well versed in the music biz, does anyone have any suggestions as to what direction I should move in next? - --Kay np: Sundays, Static and Silence nr: the latest issue of 2600. ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
