Just wanted to let everyone know that I did get more info from Kelesyn re the Serenading Genius list. The list was created before Kelesyn knew about ecto, and was done with Happy's knowledge and blessing. The info in the welcome letter is as follows: >"My name is Kelesyn, and I'm the listowner of Serenading Genius, >dedicated to the brilliant and lovely singer/poet Happy Rhodes. >This list is a tribute to Happy and to all who listen to her music. >The goal of the list is to network Happy fans everywhere, and is >not intended to compete with any other list that may exist, but >simply to amplify discussion, fellowship, and insight." So there you go. Thinking back, I know a few Happy fans have come and gone from ecto because there was less than 100% Happy content, so maybe Serenading Genius will be that for folks who just want to get their Happy news and go. Mystery solved! :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 22:27:06 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Re: Susan McKeown and Kila at the Towne Crier Mike Curry wrote re Kila: > I suppose I should comment on the night's other act as well. Well I for one pretty much agree with Mike's assessment (and his derisive snort). During some of the songs I kept waiting for the Georges Collinet voiceover: "Welcome to Afropop Worldwide!" Then there was the band in its Wyndham Hill-y mode, which was pretty bland. The times they did cut loose were usually marred by instrumentation overkill, with everybody throwing something into the pot and hoping the mix would all hang together somehow. Kila could have divided itself into two perfectly competent and well-appointed bands. Visually, Kila featured Andie MacDowell on the fiddle and Daniel Day Lewis on the guitar. :-) On the other hand, they were fronted by a fellow with a moustache, heavy beard stubble, a missing front tooth, terrified eyes, and a spastic bouncing bodrhan technique whose head kept narrowly avoiding whacking the mike full on. You had to be there. I think Mike was a bit too nice to last night's incarnation of the Chanting House. While I loved the show as usual, Jeff Allen's electric bass left an awful lot to be desired, and I thought John Spurney was on only about half the time. Lindsey is sorely missed, at least by me. (I had his tin whistle line playing through my head during "Wheels" also--if it had never existed, it would conjure itself into existence out of the void.) - --Paul who avoids Hilly music, both the Wyndham- and the Veda- varieties... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 22:48:12 -0400 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: Ecto comp; Tori tour Poor woj. SPAC plays its cards pretty close to the vest and handles their own initial sales exclusively out of their own box office. They have to, it is a documented perk of a fairly pricey membership arrangement. I've gotten tix to big name acts there before (thru the membership) and got decent seats to sellout events. I'm not going to deny that they did something "new and different" (though I would tend to guess that there are other bands who have done and are doing the celtic-tribal thing), I'm just of the opinion that "new and different" isn't always a good thing in and of itself. I knew up front that I probably wasn't going to like them, not simply because I tend to like the more traditional Irish stuff but because I know that as I rule I don't like the fusion of cultures that the term "world music" tends to indicate. Most everyone on this list (you included) has certain styles of music that they don't particularly like, so I'm hardly alone in that. >The speaker on our side of the stage *was* freaking out for most of >their set, but I was able to hear everything with really nice separation. >When a frenetic band (like Lunasa, for example) really gets going, they >produce more of an "amorphous wall of sound" than Kila did. Not that >there's anything wrong with walls of sound. :) Actually, since you chose Lunasa as your example I'll use it to disagree with you. When a band like Lunasa is going full tilt there is still a definition and clarity to what each instrument is doing that I thought was lacking with Kila. And it wasn't because of the problems with the sound system either. >Just my take on the situation. :) If you're a trad purist like Mike, >you're probably going to want to run screaming from the room -- but if >you're interested in exploring new territory from much-trod older ground, >for sure check them out. For the record, I'm not a "trad purist." If I was I wouldn't love bands like Lunasa, Solas and others of their ilk as much as I do. I just think that there is something worthwhile and special in every musical tradition, especially Irish, but also Scottish, Spanish, Japanese or anything else, and that there's a point where screwing around with the music in an attempt to somehow make it "modern" or "progressive" or "world" sort of takes the heart out of it and just leaves you with the shell. The shell can be very nice and quite pretty, but it's still just a shell. Or maybe that's what you meant by "trad purist," in which case it's a badge I'll gladly wear. I liked it, but for those of you that are huge fans of her first > album "Divine Comedy" you might be disappointed because this new material > doesn't showcase her vocal talents as well as that did. Now I'm _really_ curious. The one time I saw Milla live, her voice was _wretched_. There's probably a review of it floating around the ecto archives from 4 or 5 years ago. If I'd heard that before hearing TDC, I would have never bothered listening to the album...all of which is to say that unless a lot has changed (and she quit smoking), I can't imagine any live show "showcasing her vocal talents"! ( actually, now that I think about it, she wasn't nearly that horrendous when she was on Conan O'Brian...but that was a single song, not a whole set...) Okay, so after all the complaints...what sort of tour is Milla on and is she heading east at all? Is there any kind of release date for some sort of album, or is she just futzing around for now? jeff - -- |Jeffrey C. Actually, Meredith, woj and I were at both of Susan's shows that night and there were several other ectophiles (including of course Hillary, Sam, John and Paul) who were at least at one of them. We were also thinking of staying for Elysian Fields, but we were a bit too tired at that point. As for Susan's plans regarding a followup to _Bones_, she does want to do one, she does intend to do one, but I don't think there are any concrete plans to record it at the moment. Her next project, as I mentioned, is going to be the followup to _Bushes & Briars_, and then there's a project that I gather will involve Gerry Leonard. Just wanted to share a little brain dump...Now place your tongue firmly in your left cheek... Ectopia: (n) 1. A land where everyone is an independent, concerts are always all ages in small venues, and the religious life is dominated by the worship of six goddesses. 2. A compilation of music by ectophiles, not to be confused with the Kateopia collection of music that Kate Bush did for Fruitopia commercials. 3. A juice drink made from fuzzy blue fruit, entirely organic, with no additives. Serve chilled. Ectonic: (n) 1. A beverage made by combining Ectopia (definition 3) with an alcoholic substance of choice. Ecterror: (n) 1. The realization that you are spending too much time thinking about ecto. 2. The fear that Samson will never release all of Happy's back catalogue. 3. The fear that Kate Bush/Mary Margaret O'Hara/Dead Can Dance/Insert artist name here will never release another album. Ectroll: (n) 1. A post in which the author confesses to not liking one of the goddesses, especially Happy Rhodes. Author usually mentions that they expect to get flamed for their post. Author is then appropriately greeted with words of support and messages like "don't worry, there are several of us out here who aren't Happy fans." Ectorpor: (n) 1. The malaise that descends while waiting for the digest to come via email at precisely 12:55am. (Am I the only one who does this?) Ectoast: (n) 1. Breakfast food, goes well with Ectopia. 2. A celebratory speech made before a collaborative swill of Ectonic. Ectoleo: (n) 1. Put it on your ectoast. :) Or use ectolive oil and make a little bruschetta for yourself. Ectrauma: (n) 1. What I'm probably gonna be put through for posting this... Now, use them in a sentence! Example: I had just made an ectroll, and was suffering from ectorpor while waiting for the digest to come.
