Think it was '94. Being unfamiliar with the tendency of Toronto club shows to start really late, I ended up arriving way too early (8pm didn't seem that early at the time) and accidentally ended up meeting Milla and seeing her soundcheck. I recall being utterly starstruck, which I feel pretty foolish about now because she was perfectly friendly and approachable. I think that was one of the first shows I ever saw based on ecto recommendations. In those days I taped shows and I recall being devastated when I realized after the show that my recorder had been on pause the whole time. I got a copy from a guy I met at the show, luckily for me. I hope she plays Toronto again sometime... if she plays at Lee's Palace again I'll be able to walk 5 min to the show rather than hitch-hike for 3 hours like I did last time! :-) Steve (in a state of mourning due to the loss of about 15 CDs- I left a CD wallet in a cab in my rush to catch a train!) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 03:00:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ********************* Dave Torok (torok@nynexst.com) ********************** ************** Ethan Straffin (straffin@xenon.stanford.edu) *************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Dave Torok Mon June 24 1968 Cancer Ethan Straffin Thu June 24 1971 Cancer Kevin Dekan Mon June 27 1960 Cancer Samantha Tanner Tue June 30 1970 Wild Goose BunkyTom Tue July 02 1968 Cancer Anders Hallberg Tue July 03 1962 Cancer Kevin Harkins Thu July 05 1973 Cancer Laurel Krahn Mon July 05 1971 Cancer John J Henshon Mon July 05 1954 The Year Of The Horse / Ruled By The Moon Jim Gurley Mon July 06 1959 Cancer Lisa Wilson Fri July 08 1960 Moonchild with Java Rising Courtney Dallas Fri July 09 1971 Catte Michael Peskura Sat July 09 1949 HallOfFamer Finney T. I've dropped the idea of including lyrics and lots of pretty pictures. I'm still planning on doing the front and back cover of the booklet, as well as the CD backplate, using contributed artwork. The inside of the booklet will be text only, info given to me by the artist regarding musicians, studios, and contact information, be that web pages or mail or phone #s. Myself lacking a great deal of creativity, I propose to title this simply "An Ecto Compilation". If you have a better idea, let me know. I also need to start getting an idea of how many of these I will need to produce. To that end I have set up a form on the web where I'd like you to tell me your interest in ordering this compilation from me. http://home.earthlink.net/~foghornj/ecform.html Please visit this link and fill it in if you plan to order the ecto compilation. Note that those of you who have contributed will be receiving one copy of the compilation automatically, you do not need to fill out this form unless you want additional copies for fellow musicians, friends, family, coworkers or pets. Filling in the web form does NOT place your order. That will come later. This form is just for me to get a feel for roughly how many copies will need to be made to satisfy the initial wave of orders. There's a couple of questions there about whether you are capable/willing to assist in the copying/distribution of either the CDR or the documentation. This may be important if the quantities ordered exceed my capacity to fill them in a reasonable period of time. As originally planned, I will ask $5.00 for this CDR if you live in the USA, mainly to cover media and postage. I still need to find out what postage will be outside of the USA. I'll be away this weekend, so if there's questions and/or problems with the server handling the form, I won't be able to respond til 6/28 at the earliest. Before I give my thoughts on her performance, first things first: McEvoy is playing in Philadelphia tonight (Thursday) at Fergie's Pub, 215-928-8118, and Friday in New York City at Fiddlesticks, 212-463-0516. The concerts are free, but you do need reservations. These concerts are being sponsored by her record company, Columbia Records, and Celtic Crossings, a liquor company. Besides good music, you get a free drink and sunglasses (or at least you did at Ireland's 4Ps.) These are the last two performances of her US promotional tour, as far as I know. I enjoyed her performance a lot --I'm a McEvoy fan-- but her concert wasn't nearly as good as her new CD, Snapshots. Partly that had to do with the venue: Everyone sitting at a table had reserved the space and wanted to hear McEvoy; everyone at the bar just wanted to talk. It's hard for the audience, not to mention the performer, to coexist with din of a couple dozen people. I arrived early because I wanted a good seat, and to my surprise and pleasure got to hear McEvoy rehearse. Irelands 4Ps was virtually empty at the time, and the rehearsal songs sounded much better - --the music clearer, the vocals crisper-- than the actual performance. McEvoy asked for quiet for one song, "Easy to Lose Hope," dedicated to the memory of Veronica Guerin, the Dublin journalist who was murdered in 1996 because of what she wrote in her investigative crime stories. The crowd at the bar simmered down a bit, but the talking persisted. However, when McEvoy sung a traditional Irish song a capella, which is not on Snapshots, not a word was heard. McEvoy didn't start playing until 10pm. It was a short concert, lasting only until 10:55pm. Still, it was more than enough to demonstrate that Eleanor McEvoy is a rising star. While promoted as an Irish singer, most of her songs have to do with affairs of the heart. The lyrics are innovative, and the music lively. I was particularly impressed by her live rendition of "Did You Tell Him?" a song about unrequited love. It's clear that she's not just singing words she writes, but like most good writers, she sings what she knows about. She played both the fiddle and guitar during some of the songs. Among others, McEvoy performed "Please Heart, You're Killing Me," a song that has a little Irish, a little country, and a little pop in it. "Please Heart" is zesty and fun, creatively written and performed. McEvoy has a lot of talent and showed it last night. - --Bill Bill Adler www.adlerbooks.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 07:26:35 -0700 From: Bill Mazur Subject: Re: Ecto Compilation update Hello Ectophiles, I just want to thank Mike (Fog) for all of his hard work and dedication to the Ecto compilation project. I've heard the single from her album a few times on the radio here, and I briefly sampled the album at a listening post recently. While I didn't have enough time to get a real feel, I think the album has definite Ecto potential. She has a strong, clear voice with ethereal leanings, so comparisons with Sarah are not unexpected. I saw John Sayles' new film, "Limbo", a few days ago. (While I didn't think it was as good as "Lonestar", it was quite good in a more intimate way. David Straithairn's character reminded me of Peter Fonda's in "Ulee's Gold" -- both display the same kind of unflappable stoic competence in the face of adversity.) Anyway, apart from being a good movie, Limbo also has a great soundtrack: Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, who plays a bar singer in the movie, does her own singing. Wow, who knew she could sing like that? I wouldn't call these songs core Ecto fare (they lack any ethereal qualities), but they would probably appeal to anyone who likes the "loungy" (Holly Cole, Diana Krall?) and Joni Mitchell portions of the Ecto spectrum. As Mary Elizabeth's character says in the movie, she gets compared to Judy Collins with a deeper voice or to Joni Mitchell. Other interesting discs I've stumbled across at listening posts recently include Kila's Tog E Go Bog E (imagine the Gaelic characters :) on Green Linnet; I didn't care for the male singer's voice at all, but the instrumentals really cook. I believe the label calls this "the future of Celtic music" or some such. The other noteworthy disc is the Shanti Project Collection, which includes tracks from Red House Painters, Low, and more. (Whatever happened to RHP's new release? It was listed in the ICE preview section a while ago, but it had disappeared the last few times I checked...) This album seems to be attracting some pretty widespread attention. I saw a very positive review of it in Fortune magazine of all places. Their combination of folk music and modern alternative music is great and well-suited to their lyrics--which tend to be dark, fairy tale, story type songs. The CD contains a video which depicts their characteristic performances--the band flailing wildly, audience moshing and Emma Hardlein (sp?) standing absolutely still in the center of it all, singing with such a powerful voice, but totally inanimate. Their first proper album, _Vittrad/Crumbling Away_, has lots of great instrumental heavy-folk tracks and a few brilliant sung tunes. The second one, _Guds Spelemän/God's Musicians_, features more of Emma the Singer, which can hardly be a bad thing. The new album _Vedergällningen/Vengeance_, which many people (including myself) seem think the best one, is more, well, Ectronic. No matter what album you start with, chances are you won't be disappointed - they're all great. The important thing is that you get started with one of them... the rest will follow. (Okay, so I'm biased.) Also, it was once written: > >What is everyone's favorite Happy Rhodes song and album... Best album? That would be a tie between _Rearmament_ and _Warpaint_, with _Many Worlds..._ not far behind. Best song? Hmmm. It could be "Till the Dawn Breaks" or it could be "All Things", or "Looking over Cliffs", or "Cohabitants" (that one is just so cool)... but the one I'm going to have to pick is "To Be E. Mortal", I guess. Not because it's the most brilliant or emotive thing she ever wrote, but because it had such a stunning effect on me once. Some years back (three?), I was just getting started with Happy, having just bought _Ecto_ at a Stockholm record store (still the only shop where I've actually seen a Happy album). I had given it a few listens, and left it spinning as I went to sleep. Well, as track 13 was playing, I found myself almost waking up from a really astral dream involving stars, strange twirling patterns and a highschool teacher-turned-God. It's pretty impossible to describe, but then, in my half-awake-half-asleep state the "long, really repetitive one" revealed itself to me for the first time. I just lied there in bliss as the music soaked through my drowsy brain. Ever since, I've thought the song is too short. Juha n.p. Meira Asher: _dissected_ (hmm... wild and pretty cool) n.r. Everyone >here should check them out. any fans? there are a few BELLE AND SEB fans here in ectoland. i know i tend to listen to them a lot, and randomly rave about them, though i am not sure if i have reviewed there stuff for ecto or not. is there a ecto page on the guide about B&S? if not i am willing to edit it. of course i said that about the HOUSEMARTINS/BEAUTIFUL SOUTH page as well, and i never got around to it. i also owe NEILE a review for a CD she sent me ages ago. i am not the most timely person.... > Gentle Waves- Belle and Sebastian side project > from vocalist Isobel Cambpell. More great > lilting 60's influenced tunes. speaking of sideprojects, does anyone have thoughts on any of the other B&S side projects like LOOPER (which i like, but the novelty of it kinda gets old) as well as THE NEVER FIELDS OF FOREVER or whatever the name of the band is that also features ISOBEL CAMBPELL. is GENTLE WAVES available here in the US? speaking of TWEE brit bands, i recently picked up the 2CD set compilation for the FIELDS MICE and have to say that i quite enjoy it. i don't know why, but used copies of it seemed to cropping up here and there much more than i have ever noticed before. > Dido, No Angel-I'm sure everyone here will > catch on to this one soon. She's amazing, press is > calling her the next Sarah Mc., or at least the > next Beth Orton. i certainly have read stuff about DIDO, but i am have yet to track her stuff down. does she really compare to BETH ORTON? who i just adore.... as much as i read the rags, i fear that i never pay all that much attention to the hype that surrounds new artists. call me jaded, but i have heard one to many fiona apple "next big thing" hypes to believe it all.... > New Chemical Brothers album has Mazzy Star > vocalist Hope Sandoval. Don't have it, anyone > heard her song. New MAzzy Star album soon I > hope? Any news? i read that its brill. but it doesn't have BETH singing on it, so i probably won't buy anytime soon. plus see above about my feelings on music journalism. AHHH. HOPE. as much as i love MAZZY STAR, i was listening to my OPAL the other day, and let me say, OPAL was so much.....more.....than MAZZY. *sigh*. what is ms. kendra smith up to? anyone? that is all. at work. gotta go. irvin np. PORTISHEAD - LIVE AT THE ROSELAND, NYC - they made the mistake of letting me bring in my own CD's to listen to. now i subject everyone to my musical tastes. a couple of days ago, i forced them to listen to PORTISHEAD, LOW, and SPAIN all in a row. everyone was ready to slit their wrists at the end of the set. :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 18:38:06 -0500 From: Mark Lowry Subject: Re: da real world John Drummond wrote: > the new Missy Elliott album is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO amazing... and > FUNNY! LORD is it funny! That woman... I agree with John's review. I have been enjoying this album a lot. It has catching and rather innovative beats, good lyrics (and she wrote/co-wrote most of them, always a plus in my book!) and a terrific sense of humor. My favorite thing about it is that her R&B singing vocals are as good, or even better than, her rap voice. That doesn't often happen in the rap world. Track 9, the one w/ Lil' Kim ranting about being a beyotch, cracks me up. The b-word is used a lot throughout the album, and this time I don't mind it. It's almost a concept. It works. Big thumbs up. I guess after hearing all the original submissions I kind of decided to myself that it really wasn't appropriate to title it using Happy's titles or lyrics. It is not a Happy Rhodes tribute album or anything like that, it is a sampler of the personal musical expressions of some of the members of this mailing list. My disingenuous suggestion does use "Ecto" which derives from a Happy Rhodes song/album. But that's also the chosen name for this membership, and therefore I felt that would be appropriate. Let's hear how others feel... should I use my plain and obvious title? Use one of these (or another) Happy Rhodes phrase? Or something completely different...? I'll ponder it some more myself and see what I come up with when I return on Monday. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of meredith Sent: Thursday, June 24, 1999 7:58 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Re: Ecto Compilation update Hi!
