She looked the part of a strict librarian (ok, so she didn't look like Jeff Burka, though you get the idea), or the teacher in a one room schoolhouse out on the prairie. When she played, she often looked quite unhappy. The expression on her face alternated between distaste, distress and almost physical illness. She didn't appear to be having much of a good time at all.<< Most every time I've seen Robin perform, Neal's description would apply perfectly. Could it be any other way ? When on a rare occasion she'd manage a smile it appeared pained at best. With her material being mostly somber dirges a cheery mein would seem totally out of place. I guess her music is her outlet to expel the bile from her system. I can only enjoy Robin's work when it a particular mood. If you ever have an opportunity to see Robin perform as a component of a larger group, as she has in the past on occasion, do so. When she performs the works of others the sunshine gets through. The girl needs to cheer up ! John ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. I've heard people on this list say good things about Land Of The Blind, and had read several of Cyoakha posts to this list. Something about the posts gave me an intuitive feeling that I was going to like what Cyoakha was doing musically, so I was anxious to hear the music. My intuition was right on, and this music even surpassed my high expectations. Now to describe this music in writing is the tough part, I find it very difficult to try to describe feelings through the written word, I guess that's why we have poets. On their web page (http://www.teleport.com/~lanblind)the words ambient-tribal-trance-celtic-world-dream-alt-rock-medieval- middle eastern dreamscapes appear, which is actually a pretty good one phrase description of their music. However, this only gives a vague sense of some aspect of the music, but doesn't really hint at the depth of this music. To appreciate the depth of course, you must listen to the music. Some thoughts and feelings that come to me as I listen are avant-garde cutting edge creations, full of intelligence insight, innovations, and exploration, perhaps, a Laurie Anderson experimental type perspective. At times I hear Ingrid Karklins thunder god Perkon rearing it's head, and at other times I remotely sense the angst of Diamanda Galas or the unique signature of something like Kronus Quartet. Sometimes I hear the far off exotic sounds of remote and distant countries, and ancient civilizations. I feel drawn into another universe, strange, unfamiliar, exciting, frightening, elements of creation, no solid ground to stand on. Basically, it's the kind of music that really excites me, the kind of music I want to tell other people about and share it as much as possible. I think we have a treasure in our midst, Land Of The Blind. I can't even believe how talented this woman is! And for all these years she's been in the shadow of her brother's spotlight. The only way I can describe how wonderful this 2-CD collection is is to call it "Tetris" for the ears. Remember that Nintendo game "Tetris"? It was so addictive you wound up playing it way too long and then playing it in your sleep. That's the way Sally Oldfield's songs are. They are so hypnotic you wind up listening to the CD over and over and then you sing them all night in your sleep. Has anybody else bought this? I purchased Cyoakha's entire LoB and Cy catalog a few months ago and had promised to post my raves to Ecto when I e-mailed her. It has been quite a year for me, and I have been dropping balls left and right. Jack's post reminded me of one thing I need to cross off my "to do" list. I cannot expand much on what he said. From the description he quoted, you can easily guess that the music is diverse, and that always means that ymmv from track to track. I also picked up on the Ingrid Karklins comparison on one or two tracks. While IK and LoB are not generally to be compared, I think it is a safe bet that fans of one would enjoy the other. I must recommend "Out of Chaos" as the first/best disc if anyone is considering ordering. The stunner on this disc is "Albino Luciani" which swerves from an almost mantra like verse to a chorus with soaring, near operatic vocals (That girl has some pipes on her!). A personal fave from that disc is "The Wedding Song". This is not the one you hear at weddings. I was going through the beggining of the end of my marriage when I first heard it, and it almost knocked me over. Another winner is the very ethnic sounding "Hungarian Blue". It's easy to find yourself humming along with this one. If you find yourself looking for something new and different and wish to support an independent artist (and a list-member to boot!), contact Cyoakho to order "Out of Chaos" by Land of the Blind. Hello friends, I wish to echo the sentiments of John on wishing Ecto a "Happy Birthday" and a greeting of friendship and "Thanks" to all of it's members! It's thanks to Ecto that I have discovered many wonderful artists and kindred spirits. Most of you know that I discovered the music of Cyoakha through the list and that I am a huge fan of her music. I wholeheartedly agree with all of the wonderful comments from Jack and the others about the Land of the Blind. I would like to also encourage those of you that want to explore LotB also check out her other project with Azigza. I have seen them three times now in the San Francisco and they are phenomenal! They recently played at the 5th International Progressive Music Festival (formerly the ProgFest) at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Azigza were virtually unknown to the prog crowd. They put on a short, but stunning, performance that completely captivated and won over the hearts of the crowd! They were added to the festival bill at the 11th hour, so they didn't play the main stage (they should have). They played a set in the lobby during the dinner break of the second day of the festival. Unfortunately, their set was cut short because the show was running behind schedule due to technical problems during the sound check of other bands earlier in the evening. At any rate, Azigza played a mesmerizing and powerful 25 minute set and won numerous converts that night. They sold out their complete stock of CDs (a good 6 or 7 dozen) and cassettes before they even finished their performance. Cyoakha is a very passionate and compelling vocalist and has a wonderful stage presence. Their key instrumentalist is Aryeh Frankfurter who plays a six-string electric violin and Celtic harp. He is a truly gifted and incredible musician. The rest of the band are excellent as well. They flesh out the line-up with three outstanding multi-percussionists, an excellent bass player who doubles on sitar, and a very good guitarist. Here is what the flyer that they passed out at the festival says about them: Azigza is a new grouping of multi-instrumentalists who have created a unique amalgam of sound which blends the music of Arabia, Africa, India, Bulgaria and other world music with the hard edge of rock 'n' rock and the elegance of western symphonic music. They easily move from trance inducing tribal rhythms to musical intricacy, from spacious ambiance to visceral rock bombast. The description is very accurate yet in no way does justice to the power and magic of this band. I highly encourage any Bay Area Ectophile to go and see them at one or more of their July San Francisco dates. Here they are: * 7/8 Paradise Lounge, SF * 7/22 Cocoderie Club, SF * 7/27 Bottom of the Hill, SF (Appearing w/ Daevid Allen's (of Gong and Soft Machine fame) University of Errors You can check out some of their music at MP3.com. Unfortunately I got caught up in a very busy work schedule and then caught a nasty cold which laid me up most of last week. A great big public THANK YOU to Valerie for giving me an opportunity to get back on the air for a night!!! And welcome to Linda Donahue -- I guess it's a good thing I gave out the subscription instructions. :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 22:58:56 EDT From: LinOnnLine@aol.com Subject: Question regarding ecto radio program on wpkn Dear ectonauts, I'd be interested to know if others of you listened to the ecto radio programing on wpkn last night as I did. Now, my second question, are you a newbie as a result of that program, as I am? Or are you a longtime, died-in-the-wool-ectograph? Meredith, you may get a chuckle out of how I found the website and the List. I began listening to your program while I was driving in my car, became quite engrossed at the sophistication of the other-worldly polytones I was hearing. Then became further peaked at the Internet connection between you and Valerie, as I, too, am pretty involved in the net. Well by now I was home and quickly rushed to tune you in in the house. I grabbed a note pad and dashed off bits of things you were saying, mostly names of artists, all unknown to me, and then this constant reference to all things ecto. I wondered what the derivation of ecto was. Echo? Ektoh? ehctau? As I wrestled with that, I decided I better figure out the root word, if I expected to find it in a search engine. Could this be something related to the equestrian world? ekwo? equus? Could it be connected to body type? ectomorth? It can't be surgical! as in -ectomy, tonsillectomy. As you can see, I was spinning in circles. You had not given the URL yet. I powered up, logged on, and found the world of ecto quite readily on the first webcrawler I tried. The rest is history. I am HERE!! Thank you. Thank you. That's pretty frightening. Also frightening is the number of us here now, the number of us who were here back when (and feel free to interpret "back when" as one two, five, seven, eight, whatever years ago). What a fabulous community. Thanks, Vickie, Jess (wherever you are), Greg, woj, Jeff, and all the other folks who've been involved in ecto's maintenance / creation in one way or another over the years. Thanks to Neile and the rest of the Guide team, for making it such a cool project (not to mention one which has had the way cool result of me receiving e-mail from musicians/artists I respect tremendously!) But mostly thanks to the readers and contributors, the folks who manage to make the mailing list what it has been, continues to be, and I hope will remain for many, many years to come. Tonight was Kelly Joe Phelps and Shemekia Copeland, and I must comment about the latter. She's twenty years old, and she has an amazing future ahead of her. As she said tonight, her goal is to help guide younger folks to the blues, and she may well do it. Her voice is incredible; she brought down the house at the Boulder Theater tonight. (Her band was excellent also.) The show should air in about a month; they'll be editing a 2 1/2 hour taping to 1 hour for the radio. If you don't know if E-town is aired in your area (it's mostly on NPR stations in the US), check out the following url. http://www.etown.org Ellen ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 15:34:26 +1000 From: "Tim Finney" Subject: Re: A word for electronica - ---------- >From: Neile Graham >To: Ecto >Subject: A word for electronica >Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 4:32 AM > > > Hey all-- > > Just wanted to see if we could brainstorm a genre term for the kind of > music that is frequently called trip-hop or electronica or sometimes acid > jazz (it seems to be that none of these terms are quite right). I'm > talking about some umbrella phrase that covers bands that seem to be doing > slightly similar things with vocals (usually intensely emotional) over > electronic sampling (often with the usual instrumental suspects but > sometimes without). "Electronica" seems to refer mainly to the vocal-less > atmospheric stuff. I don't think that we can really give a label to it, other than electronic-based music with female vocals (perhaps, for our purposes, "El-Ecto"), because the artists you mentioned really are too broad - broader in fact than any dance genre except dance itself. Trip-hop is certainly unsuitable, because I don't hear any elements of dub, house or hip hop in a lot of the artists mentioned, and "electronica" is strictly an American term referring to intelligent techno (ie. Aphex Twin, Autechre etc.), no matter how much ignorant critics have distorted it in recent times. Also I sort of feel a bit guilty about even referring to it as a new genre, because it suggests a level of cynicism about the various artists' motives in creating that style of music. I don't like to think of them all as Portishead-clones, but giving them all a specific name makes the link too strong to ignore. Anyways, just my thoughts... I've been on the list since a few months before its first birthday, and not only have I discovered an incredible amount of amazing music through the list, I've also made some wonderful on-line and in-person friends. Ecto has enriched my life and helped feed my obsession with music. Thanks to all of your for your love of music. I'd name names, but I worry about missing someone out, and everyone (even you lurkers, yes, you) are important to the community here. And welcome to ecto, Linda. Ecto is named after Happy Rhodes' fourth album, since the list was formed around her incredible music at the time when _ecto_ was her most recent recording. If you haven't heard her music, you're in for an utterly amazing treat. Anyway, everyone, keep sharing what you're listening to. - --Neile n.p.
