[Emily sings on half of the songs here, though, on first listen, I don't like it as much as any of her solo discs]) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 00:59:06 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: robin holcomb So tonight was the long awaited Robin Holcomb show. It wasn't as remarcable as I had hoped it would be, but it was a pleasure to see anyway. I kind of hate to review a performer's manner, since that should be secondary to a performance, but sometimes you just can't help it. Robin looked very stern, with her hair pulled tightly back in a bun. She looked the part of a strict librarian (ok, so she didn't look like Jeff Burka, though you get the idea), or the teacher in a one room schoolhouse out on the prairie. When she played, she often looked quite unhappy. The expression on her face alternated between distaste, distress and almost physical illness. She didn't appear to be having much of a good time at all. Between song banter was kept to a bare minimum, typically just the title of the song (if that). However, it's the music that's important, and when I wasn't distracted by watching her perform, I thought the music was anywhere from lulling to moving. She played a ton of songs from the first album, a smattering from Little Three, and I imagine a few from Rockabye, which I don't have. It was very interesting to hear the songs I was familiar with done with just piano accompaniment, rather than the atmospheric production of the album. Her music seems more like living room music than concert music. The mournful tales of struggle and harsh, poetic landscapes were subtle, but somewhat samey. The only really dramatic musical moment was her almost unrecognizable version of Dixie (from Rockabye). She really went wild at the piano. Songs like the Graveyard Song, and the show closing Deliver Me, stood out from the rest of the set. In a radio interview this afternoon, she said that she was working on a new album of songs, which she hadn't done in a while. She was also working on an instrumental tribute album to Stephen Foster. If that gets the Dixie treatment, that'll be very exciting! The most amusing exchange on the radio interview was when the DJ pointed out that she had made a lot of mention of her piano playing, but hadn't said anything at all about her singing. Did she have anything to say about her voice? Her resonse - Well, it's not particularly notable. Which is true enough, though it works quite well for the songs she has written. neal np: Wreckless - Potato Eaters ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 03:00:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******* Joerg Plate (Joerg.Plate@arbi.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de) ******** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Joerg Plate Mon June 12 1967 Gemini Chris Montville Tue June 13 1978 Gemini Ectoplasm (original name) Mailing List Thu June 13 1991 Fuzzier blue Mark R. They took turns doing 2 songs apiece for a few go-rounds, sharing band members and playing on one another's songs. It was very cool. I hadn't seen Dorothy Scott in over 4 years, since we saw her open for Innocence Mission all that time ago at Fez. I was amazed to find that she still hasn't recorded anything since the EP we bought then, _Into The Natural_, though she did say she hopes to have something out in the fall. It's going to kick. The material she played last night was much more driving and primal, though no less intense than her earlier work. She makes no attempt to hide that her single biggest influence is Mary Margaret O'Hara, and indeed seeing her live is very close to experiencing MMOH. woj summed her up perfectly: "The Force is strong within her." She's a must-see for anyone in the NYC area, and I'm NOT going to allow 4 more years to pass before I see her play again! Joy Askew was wonderful, as always. And Deb Montgomery, whom I'd never heard before was rather boring in comparison to the others on the bill. woj compared her singing voice to Pamela Means, which is pretty close.
