Peter Clark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 04:07:11 -0400 From: Mark Miazga Subject: Patty Griffin's "Living With Ghosts" I had a serious re-discovery this weekend from within my own CD collection. Before a long trip, I grabbed a few CD's at random out of my considerable collection, and one of them ended up being "Living With Ghosts". I had picked it up probably a year or so ago from a 4-for-$10 used CD bin, had listened to it a few times, and wasn't greatly impressed. Then I heard "One Big Love" playing on my college radio station nearly every day, and bought _Flaming Red_. I thought it wsa pretty good ("Tony", "One Big Love" are great songs), but quite uneven; she was often overpowered by her band. Now I see why _Flaming Red_ wasn't only a little uneven, it was also a huge disappointment and come-down from her debut. _Living With Ghosts_ is phenomenol. I listened to it three times on my way home, and it's gotta be up to about twelve listens through by now. This is certainly one of the great acoustic albums of the decade; I'd even put it next to Brenda Kahn's "Epiphany in Brooklyn". The album is basically just Griffin and her acoustic guitar, and the storytelling lyrics are incredibly moving. It's not very polished, but still melodic and utterly beautiful. Perhaps most impressive is her voice. Soulful, even gospel-like, it is full enough to sear through any of the soundscapes her acoustic guitar creates, but also subtle enough to hang on a note and make you weep. A comparison to some of Jewel's early, unreleased, live work is somewhat accurate, before Jewel became insufferably bland and over-produced, but Griffin's work here is much better. This is a phenomenol album, and I think I need to dust a spot off on my top-ten list. It's strange how many of my favorite albums of all time were albums I found unimpressive at first... anyhow, I love it. - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 302 Mason Hall, MSU East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 355-2080 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. I didn't get reserved seats, but was right up front for both shows, you just gotta get there a little early. The sound was great for both shows, very intimate, I'd imagine being in the back wouldn't be too great though. Parking was easy, lot right across the street. And I hadn't thought about it before, but as someone else said, I wasn't overwhelmed with smoke as I've been in other places. At the Maria show I did see one party making a big fuss about having made reservations and being seated about halfway back (hmm.. that would've been more appropriate at the GEG show), so eating downstairs isn't doesn't necessarily get you right up front. I discovered Penny Flanagan a couple months ago. (Although I haven't the foggiest idea of how I came by her.) But it was difficult to get her CDs, Light Sleeper and Bravado. The only place I could find them was at Greg's Music World in Australia at http://www.musicworld.com.au/. Penny Flanagan has her own web site at http://www.ozemail.com.au/~pennynet/welcome.html. She lives in Australia. Flanagan's lyrics and music play off each other, giving some of her songs a bit of suspense that makes the listener curious about what's coming next in the song. This is especially true about the first song on Light Sleeper, "Picasso With the Girl." Her songs are like nouvelle cooking -- unexpected ingredients that blend well together in surprising ways. Her music is best classified as pop-folk, but with a certain edgyness, and occasional jazziness. Flanagan's lyrics are clearly sung: You can feel that she puts her entire self into her music. The songs on both Light Sleeper and Bravado are diverse, so you won't tire of the cds easily. - --Bill n.p. After all, it *is* a Happy show we're talking about. :) My reasons for hating the Tin Angel have been documented in the other responses to your question - they make you think that you're guaranteed an excellent seat if you drop a large wad of cash in the overrated restaurant downstairs, then display no qualms whatsoever about still seating you in the back once you get upstairs, even though you *tried* to get there earlier, but the service was so slow in the restaurant that it took you 15 minutes to get your check and there was nothing you could do. And the employees upstairs have never even heard of the concept of "customer service". (It's not just me, either -- I warned some Susan Werner fans over on the believers list the last time she played there, but they didn't believe me and saw the error of their ways. I've always stopped short of sending letters of complaint about the Tin Angel/Serrano's to the Better Business Bureau, but these people didn't. I have to admit I found that rather vindicating.) However, I have to agree that the space itself is a great place to see Happy, if you're lucky enough not to get screwed by the employees. The sound has always been excellent, and like Vickie said, Happy is at her best there. I say go for it - it's early enough that you should be able to get a good ticket deal, and if you make sure to get there really early, you won't have a problem. I'm sorry I'm not going to be able to be there as well. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 12:07:55 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Cordelia's Dad June Newsletter Cordelia's Dad info for those interested. - --Neile >X-Sender: Steeple@world.std.com (Unverified) >Mime-Version: 1.0 >Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 11:24:11 -0400 >To: Cordelia88@aol.com >From: Steeple@world.std.com (Peter Irvine) >Subject: Cordelia's Dad June Newsletter > >Cordelia's Dad June Newsletter > >Contents: >1) Upcoming Concerts > >2) Laura Risk solo album release concert > > >1. I remember being rather blase about it, too, till I had the opportunity to hear Patty play live (opening for Jewel, as a matter of fact). I think the environment has to be just right when you hear her acoustic work, but when it is, the impact stays with you. I've seen her live several times since then, and she always gives an incredible show. She also does a cover of "Crazy" which is guaranteed to knock you flat. >A comparison to some of Jewel's >early, unreleased, live work is somewhat accurate, before Jewel became >insufferably bland and over-produced, but Griffin's work here is much >better. Having heard them both in the same theater, minutes apart, I can say that Jewel is (or was) capable of the same level of performance; but there is a definite stylistic difference that probably divides their audiences somewhat. Patty leaves the emotion turned on full blast most of the time, which (even though artfully applied) probably wears some people down quicker. Hi Ecto-friends, In honor of Happy's touring, I'm offering up some CDs of my new favorite band, (sorta) free for the taking. The band is The String Cheese Incident. They are a "jam band", which means lots of lengthy, improvisational jams during their concerts. They play a unique mix of bluegrass, jazz, rock, calypso and blues covers that's a bit hard to describe! It's definitly not a traditional Ecto sound, but it is good music, and if nothing else, folks around here like good music! The band allows taping of their concerts and trading, as long as no money changes hands and no profit is made. The trading community in general helps to accomodate non-traders by offering B&P trades. Basically, the non-traders mails Blank CDs (B) and return Postage (P) to the trader. The trader burns the CDs (or copies the tapes or whatever), and sends them back. And so the music spreads. So, what I'm offering to my fellow Ecto-philes is a chance to hear a new-to-most-of-you band, for only a couple of dollars in CD-R blanks and postage. Most Office Max/Best Buy places have blank CD-R media for $1.50-2.00 (sometimes as low as $1) per blank. Don't buy consumer audio blanks; they're usually a lot more expensive, and unneccesary. Postage can range anywhere from $0.99 to $3.20, depending on how many CDs you're sending and how you're mailing them (First Class vs. Priority, jewel cases vs. sleeves). My show list is at: http://www.netaxs.com/~joc/dead.html and B&P instructions are at: http://www.netaxs.com/~joc/dead.html#BnP Given the size of the offer (I'm offering this on several email lists), there is a two-show limit. And please limit yourselves to SCI only. If you see other shows from other bands that you want, wait about three weeks and then email me. -------------------------------------------------- SPECIAL NOTE SPECIAL NOTE -------------------------------------------------- Please respond directly to me, not to the list! Reponses to the list will be ignored! Also, turn- around of shows may be lengthy due to volume.
