Hey all, Being on the west coast and having never seen Happy perform live, a year and a half ago I promised myself I'd go see Happy's next show whenever and wherever she performed. When the MWABT "tour" occurred, I couldn't get away from work. Well, I haven't bought the plane tickets yet, but I am now very seriously thinking about catching the up coming Tin Angel shows. Other than the obvious, "Drew, have thought about seeing someone about that OCD?" does anyone have any specific comments? I was specifically concerned by Meth's open hatred for the venue. Thanks, Drew ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 00:19:22 -0700 From: "Drew Harrington" Subject: Mercury Rev / Crash Test Dummies A good friend of mine recently called me and told me he had a spare ticket to see Mercury Rev and thought I'd like them. He's got good taste in music and knows my tastes, so I went. They were fabulous. I had never heard them before and usually it takes me a few listens to ward up to something new, but I liked them from the first song. They have a kind of pop / psychedelic thing going on that I liked very much. First time in a while I've seen a theremin on stage - and played well at that. The lead vocalist has been compared to Neil Young. I can hear that in terms of timber, but not style. I later picked up a copy of their current CD "Deserter's Song". It's going to be one of my favorite CDs of the year. __ I recently saw Crash Test Dummies and they were great fun. If you like their new CD, don't miss them. Six Pence None the Richer are opening on the current tour. They were okay. I liked them better this time than last time I saw them. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 02:28:51 -0500 From: Kay S Cleaves Subject: Another mention of Paul "insert witty-bits here" Kim Funny, that. A few years ago, I met a fellow who was babysat by Nena, of 99 Luftballons fame, when he was a small child. I don't remember why Meth hates the Tin Angel, but I'm sure she'll be glad to tell us :) I've been to the Tin Angel twice to see Happy, in '96 and '97, and each time I stayed for both shows. (Well, ok, one sold out show I didn't have a ticket for and I spent the show sitting in the stairwell just outside the door. But hey, the people from the Tin Angel didn't make me leave, and I could here fine, even if I couldn't see anything.) Those are the only times I've been there, and I didn't have any complaints with the place. It's a long narrow bar, with tables through the middle and barstools along the side. Like most long bars, it'd probably be a crummy place to see a show if you were in the back. I haven't had any trouble getting somewhere in the first half of the club, and the view from there was great. The sound was good, and I don't remember it being oppressively smokey. So, except for the fact that it's in Philly, I don't have any problems with the place. I can't remember if there is a restaurant associated with it where you can get your seats reserved if you eat there? Is this true? Or am I just thinking of the Middle East? Also, in years past, we have gotten an ecto-suite or two at a hotel which turns out to be pretty cheap and fun, well, fun if you like the idea of sharing a room with a half dozen other ectophiles. Seems like that could probably happen again. neal np: Michelle Shocked - 9:30 Club Farewell concert ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 23:09:43 -0500 From: There is no spoon Subject: Re: Should I go see Happy? Well, I'm not sane so I wouldn't listen to me, but I'd say go for it. If you can afford it and it's easy, why not? You only live once. I live in Chicago. I've seen Happy live 15 times. She's never performed in Chicago. Therefore, I've traveled to the east coast to see all those concerts. Luckily, she usually does 2 or more shows at a time, as she's doing this time, so I haven't had to *travel* 15 times. >I was specifically concerned by Meth's open hatred for the venue. That probably has to do with the fact that the Tin Angel reserves seats for people who dine downstairs at Serrano's restaurant, but even if you eat there (very expensive) you're not guaranteed a really good seat close to the stage. They're very frustrating that way. The venue itself, IMHO, is wonderful. Great sound, small and intimate, and very supportive of Happy (though not her fans, especially those who travel to be there). It's a trade off. My advice, if you go, is get there early and hope to score one of the good, non reserved seats. Eating downstairs might help, but you won't know until they show you to your seat. Btw, it's the kind of club with tables and chairs, not theater-type seats. There are (non-reserved) stools along one side, which is where we usually end up. The venue is long and narrow, with the tiny stage at one end and the bar at the other (good, because you don't get bar sounds through the show, unless you're sitting back there). The bathrooms are located behind the stage, so people are up going back and forth throughout the show. It's not a perfect venue, but I like it better than just about any other place I've seen Happy. Other venues have been bigger, but just not as intimate. It's always obvious that Happy feels comfortable at the Tin Angel. She laughs and jokes, wheras at most of the other venues she's been very reserved and non-talkative. The Tin Angel shows are always fun, which is why I'll never miss a show there if I can possibly help it. So, go! (But then, I wouldn't listen to me if I were you, it'll cost you a lot of money) :-) V ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 00:59:49 EDT From: FAMarcus@aol.com Subject: Re: Should I go see Happy?
