Happy spelled the words that way. It actually wasn't an interview by or for Homeground. It was an interview by and for Ectophiles in 1991. People on this list submitted the questions, I mailed them to Happy, she wrote her answers and mailed them back to me, then I sent them to Ecto. Quite a while later, Peter and Krys of Homeground asked if they could reprint the interview (as a 2-parter) in Homeground. The Homeground version was somewhat edited for space. Happy wrote down her answers to the written down questions, and I sent it to the list exactly as she had written them. She's got a wonderful sense of humor and certainly didn't mean to offend anyone. An incredible resource!! My favorites are A. Mann and Sam Phillips. I hear that Sam may be in Chicago this weekend, with her husband, T. Bone Burnett, who is performing? Very impressed with Jane Siberry's albums...but maybe I'm not ready for Veda Hille...listened to "Spine" last night, but couldn't get into it! Did like her voice, though. Have been listening to advance of "No Angel," by British singer Dido Armstrong, which is due in stores June 1st. Enjoying it. Her lyrics and style are evocative of Aimee Mann but her voice seems closer to Sandy Denny, especially on the 4th track of the album, "My Lovers Gone" which is folk/rock. I could almost believe with a slight imaginative twist that Sandy was singing. A customer in my book store thought that Dido sounded similar to Alanis Morrisette, but more listenable! Dido has been the lead singer for her brother Rollo's band "Faithless" for the past few years while working up her own material. Anyone with comments about Faithless? A number of Dido's songs have a melancholy tinge to them, including the second track "Hunter." A few lines from song are: "If you were a king up on your throne, would you be wise enough to let me go?"... "I want to be a hunter again. I want to see the world alone again, to take a chance on life again." Melancholy, but the delivery of those words is strong and powerful. From the jacket note, "No Angel combines Dido's love for warm acoustic sounds with her brother's fascination for beats and all things electronic. The album is both new and classic at the same time. Above all it is the quality of the songs that will make this album both durable and successful." I like it enough that I'll be buying the regular CD on June 1st. I wouldn't want to wear out the advance! First of all, LOL to Paulie with the Phantom Poopeypants....that man has been slaying me for years now :-) Anyhoots, I was in Woodstock earlier today burning my draft card and having flashbacks when I saw a sign for a group having a gig on June 19th at the Bearsville Theatre, they are called Mercury Rev. On my way back, while listening to WDST Woodstock Radio, they had a commercial for the show with a few song clips, and they sounded like the kind of a group Ectophiles might be into or know about. Anyone have more info on them? Also, when I drove by the theatre I noticed sound trucks & such so it looked like a show was on tonight and low and behold there was. Turns out the dude I talked to asking ( "hey, who's playing?") was the bass player for the Crash Test Dummies, who are the main act tonight. We chatted for a bit....sounds like the group is not as whacked as I had thought when they had their hit two years ago......the other guys were inside mulling around on stage and seemed like a great bunch of guys. I looked for the two guys in the car crash commercials (Vince & Larry ) but didn't see them ;-) Anyway, if anyone is interested (and online right now)....the show is being cybercast now at WDST (some female opener I do not recognize is singing right now.....9:48pm ET) CT Dummies on at 10:15 to 10:30 http://www.wdst.com/live.ram Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 22:27:15 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: More Happy trails Mark asks: > Was wondering if it's wise to see both of Happy's shows at Tin Angel. > Does she typically do different sets, or are they pretty much the same? Typically, Happy varies her sets a bit; maybe a different cover song, or something. And the between-song banter will vary. But despite the relatively low incidence of difference, I'd still recommend seeing both shows, because, well, mostly because a Happy concert is just such a special event that why on earth, once you've gone to the bother of getting to the venue, would you want to only see one?! I agree with whoever said they liked the vocalizations.  They add so much to the music.

This is the first time that I have purchased a cd strictly from postings to this list.  I started buying Jane Siberry after reading the postings and borrowing her cds from a friend and my roommate before I started buying them.

I also read Judith Tarr's 'The Hall of the Mountain King' and 'The Lady of Han-Gilen' (Avaryan Rising series) because of comments on the list - I am more likely to buy a book because someone says it is good than to buy cds mostly because I get the books second-hand and cds are expensive.

BTW, thanks to Paul Kim for the quote which I stole from one of his postings and added to my signature because it applies to me!  I always look for whatever he adds to his signature as it usually proves to be interesting/amusing.

The Rome Section of Philip Glass and Robert Wilson's "the CIVIL warS: a tree is best measured when it is down" (available in the Glass bin of the classical section of your grocer's freezer) is finally out on Nonesuch. It's just great stuff, written as Glass was just getting the hang of what to do with an orchestra and before he started repeating himself so much work-to-work (as opposed to moment-to-moment :-]). A bootleg tape of it was one of may favorite things before losing it (lending to someone who moved away) ten years ago, and I can still play much of it in my head. As an added plus, Laurie Anderson performs the text in the final 20 minute scene. ooh... As a possible minus, as is true of much Robert Wilson, the texts make Nirvana lyrics seem lucid and linear. Really. (Hmm... boos to Warner Brothers/Nonesuch for not having the CD on their site yet, and for having so much of the site consist of pages that contain only graphics without alt tags or text links. Grr...) It's definitely Romantic/Minimalist Opera Music, so many may not like it, but if this sounds at all interesting, grab it NOW! n.p. Duh :-) n.r. How is it >that we KNOW that he is the emperor? Was there something in one of the >older movies, or in this one, that tells us? I don't know if this would have clicked with you, but the actor who played the Emperor in Return of the Jedi is the same guy who played Senator Palpatine. His name is Ian McDiarmid. While he didn't get top billing in RotJ, he did get top billing in TPM. If you pay attention, Darth Sidious has the same cloak and voice and chin as the Emperor did in RotJ (and to some extent, in Empire Strikes Back). And Senator Palpatine's voice sounds similar too. So, making the connections, Sidious could be the Emperor who is portrayed by the same actor as Palpatine. Also, in the novels adapting the original trilogy and various encyclopedias and histories of the galaxy as well as the subsequent literary sequels (most notably in the comic book The Dark Empire or whatever it was called), it is stated that Senator Palpatine rose to power in the Old Republic and declared himself Emperor. I don't think the name "Palpatine" is ever uttered in any of the movies, but it is in the books.
